That was AWESOME!!!!! Wow. Everybody in the cast was amazing. And the actor who was in the 1973 film version was always my favorite, but, I think I just found a Pilate I may like even better. :) Bravo to everyone, powerful musical. I think everyone should see it at least once, regardless of their religion or even lack thereof.
I think the 73 movie pilate is better simply because of the raw emotion he put into it. Listen to the "don't let me stop your great self destruction" part. He's screaming it like a man saying it in real life should.
I don't know. I don't see the mob as jews or anything. What I see is the powerful spectacle of a black clad mob descending on Jesus and Pilate. It's a powerfully symbolic suggestion of almost cosmic forces in the play. The black and coats are simply dehumanising garb that invokes this idea of cosmic force, because it removes any distinctly human face from it. Sure, the play can be about the everyman. But I kind of like this cosmic aspect to this production.
@alonx12345 So now, making the Jewish people look too Jewish in a story about the Jews is considered anti-Semitic? Wow. How about that whole first half of the Bible where the Jews claim they are chosen above everyone else in God's eyes? Let's just call that anti-everyone else.
i love all the versious i have seen so far wither msucial or msucical movie, and i have to say my favorite scene is that with pilate. and I love the 39 lashing part,k alot ofthem are so contemorary....LOVE IT...but i have to say fred johanson is my favorite pilate
What amazes me about this Pilate is that he's throwing the actor that's playing Jesus about the stage like a rag doll. In most production I've seen, Jesus is almost treated gingerly, as if they're afraid they're gonna hurt the actor. This guy is just so into the role, he doesn't seem to care about the actor's safety. Still, it is powerful stuff.
@DarkAngel40 If you watch The Last Supper, Jesus does the same thing to Judas - I think they really just got into it and trusted each other. I love it.
@VOLUNTEERSown It is Judas' body because if you watch Judas' Death, in this version he doesnt hang himself he shoots himself through the mouth. if you look at his hands he is holding a gun and his mouth is bloody. so its Judas.
I love how much thought they put into the number of lashes, because 40 means "many" in the bible, such as 40 days and 40 nights etc. It means that Pilate couldn't do "many". It's so clever.
40 lashes was also traditionally considered a death sentence. Since Pilate was trying not to have to kill Jesus, he assigned one less than the death penalty. Also clever.
Well, the reason they didn't do 40 was because ( I forget where) in the Bible, 40 lashes could kill a man. I think that means Pilate wanted to give Jesus one more chance to save himself.
@hazzagal the 39 lashes are due to the fact that according to roman law, 40 lashes were considered an execution. 39 lashes was the maximum number permitted without a death sentence.
Ive always been partial to the original cast, this interpretation is rather good though, it's one of the few that understands keeping a quick musical tempo is essential to this scenes intensity.
I am a very big of all llyod webber musicals, i have seen the touring production of jesus christ superstar in belfast at the grand opera house with lee rhodes and the flogging was more gory than this, but pilate in this production is superb, a fine performance.
Furthermore: for comparison, watch the 1973 movie. The people in the mob look like the disciples...they're all just people. And the scene is far more powerful that way, because it shows ordinary people turning against Jesus out of fear rather than cartoony villains turning on him out of evil. Given that the truly revolutionary thing about this play is that it gave the "bad guys" motivations and made them sympathetic, the whole point is that the mob is ordinary.
So were the disciples. And it's one thing to make people look outlandish or cartoony without trying to make them look like Nazi caricatures. And historically accurate? Sorry, but that mode of dress is Hasidic. Hasidism was founded in the 1700's, not 30 A.D. How exactly is that historically accurate? In this time period, the Jews in the mob and the Jews who were disciples would be dressed the same...but only the bad guys are dressed "like Jews".
And since when have a few anachronisms been unacceptable in a musical? Why is historical accuracy's importance when it's a charicature being created, and not a genuine representation of someone? Especially to nit-pick over something as moronic as clothing? For God's sake, in this particular production, Judas SHOOTS himself.
What the hell is with modern productions of JCS and their costuming of the mobs to look like caricatures of Chassidic Jews? Pretty much every character in the damn play is Jewish, but I don't see any good guys in stereotypical costumes...yet in every post 2000 production I know of, the angry mob has been made to look as "Jewish" as possible! Yeah, the 70's version was corny, but at least it wasn't anti-Semitic. I can't effing BELIEVE this...
...but...you know the mobs were jewish. its not anti-semetic just historically acturate. and they wanted to make them caricatures to make it seem more over the top
Well the crowds screaming for his crucifixion were Jewish...If you haven't seen the 2000 version then check it out, that's pretty anti-semitic I think, showing the people dressed in the hassidic clothes with the blood on their hands
I dont like his pilate. Sure, he can sing... but his acting is lacking the dramatism of the scene.. ne needs a little more deepness in the voice to be a powerful pilate.

Common wisdom, at the time, believed that more than thirty-nine lashes, of a very brutal whip, would kill -- hence, thirty-nine lashes.

I think that 40 lashes kills a man,
Pilate never wanted to hurt Jesus,
You can see pilate getting more and more distressed with each lash,
So He stops at 39 to avoid killing him ant trying to shut the crowd up...

I love informing people of the following:
On the original LP,
the voice of Jesus=Ian Gillan:
most famous for singing "Smoke on the Water" (1972).
The voice of Judas=Murray Head:
most famous for singing "One Night in Bangkok" (1984).
sex6cult9revolution 2 years ago
@sex6cult9revolution Ian Gillian was Jesus on the original LP?
That's neat trivia, thanks
I like informing people of this: "One night in Bankok" is counted as the first rap song to reach #1 cos its entirely spoken word.
