Actually my favourite songs by Elton were "Can you feel the love tonight" and "Sacrifice" but the more I listen to the song the more favourite it is becoming... This is one of the best blues songs ever I believe
Quite frankly (though my name is Jim), I'm surprised at how little attention Mary J Blige is getting from the comments here. Everyone is just saying how Elton John is so great and how those were the good old days but come on people, think about it, he's aged and he's past his prime. Look how Blige's voice sounds JUST LIKE Elton's. She's such a wonderful singer and Elton just sounds like the wrinkly old man he is. This is the future of music. Blige4ever.
@g5pigott I hear in this performance a kind of dialogue between EJ and MJB: In the first part, MJB was kind of frozen, stiff, not improvising. You could feel her discomfort. The EJ took over, and tried to loosen her up a bit. In the final part she was simply wonderful -- All heart, no fear, improvising freely, and in perfect harmony with EJ. I take this as a demonstration of EJ's incredible quality as mentor, that he managed to bring out the best in her.
@gmayer66 you are so observant, because I sensed that Mary was a bit tense too. I have heard her perform and she seemed rather reserved at first, and it seems when Elton mentions her name in the song (about being there for her) she let it out. He is so generous and gracious. I love this man not just for his ethereal talent, but his ability to share the lime light with others. As you said, to be a wonderful mentor. Great observation!
Both of them are so talented individually, but I feel like they really excel at duets. She has a beautiful and emotional voice and he's just brilliant.
"I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" is one of my favorite EJ's song (if not THE one). This version rocks. I know everubody said that and it's already become a common place, but yes, MJB is hot!
'Tis funny, the first few times I heard this version I wasn't keen on Mary's deep breathy tone, I didn't think it suited the song. However, the more I heard it the more I began to appreciate it. Now I think it's a brilliant duet. Mary's really pulls out all the stops, particularly the last minute or two.
Worldclass song, I love it, I have the CD, but to my mind Elton John is not the best live singer - and the voive of Mary J. Blige is really weak in this appearance.
This was just a masterpiece of a duet doing an already masterpiece of a song. MLB just took it and made it her own. That's what someone is supposed to do when the do a cover of someone's song.
i thought she sounded horrible at the first part the first few times i heard this on my mom's "Mary Ja Blige & Friends" CD. but now I really like it. the deep, breathy vocals at the beginning of the song is now my favorite part, lol.
Glad you like it, 4. I'm getting better at re-mastering these. The last two take up the full screen as you see. Now I'm itching to redo all of them :-)
Laughing like childern, livng like lovers =)... great song and great live performance =)!!

Mary J. Blige does Elton John's music proud. He's 100% right about how talented she is.
That pink jacket Sir Elton is wearing is heinous though. We all know you're gay, do you have to shout it from the rooftops?

MJB said this was the most nervous she ever was in her life- how could you not be being on stage with Elton John?
