Cool, but it looks as though you butchered the pvc that could have been used to hold cups of growing medium, So, your system would be just as good if you used rain gutters. I would try different types of systems if I was you. The bottle with the plunger thing cound be achieved with a bell sypho/ valve
great job mate. Isn't the ratio of water pond for veg too small? I use a ratio of 2 volumes of veg for 1 volume of water and its cruising. I have "red bery" ( a variation of tilapia, hybrids) they grow quickly, are mostly vegeterian fish and become plate size in roughtly 5 months.
Great job. I plan on exposing my parent's to the wonderful world of aquaponics, but am VERY new to the idea. It seems simple enough, but I can tell it's quite tedious and takes dedication and work. Kudos to you and THANKS a TON for the video. We have already fully stocked ponds. My goal is to convince my parents to let us install a system or two and show them the TRUE potential of our land. Any suggestions for reference? Thanks again! Your video will help a lot. Keep up the good work!
Great Job!!! how do you keep the water from getting too hot in the sun? I noticed there is no cover. For the pump, you said it is homemade. how did you get it to operate on the battery. Is the battery charge by solar power? Thank you for posting this video.
my main goal was to raise fish. The problem with a fish pond like this in your backyard is the fish fouling the water. Hence the pea-gravel garden's main purpose is to filter the water. That said, the seasonal growing of vegetables to me was an added benefit. I've not had any plants in the system long enough to develope any "root rot".
My talapia were netted by a local fisherman and actually came with broods in their mouths. Unfortunately my pond water was too cold for the talapia and the hardiest of them only lived for a few days. However my catfish, bluegill and shiners are alive and well today.
It takes about one 3lb. bag of pea gravel per 10' stick of 3' pipe. My few pepper plants have proven to be the most resiliant. It has taken some time for the nutrients to build up and break down. The water proved too cold for the talapia...we suffered 100% loss. However, the speckled cat, shiners, smalll mouth bass and crappie are doing well.
I've got a much smaller experiment going on here in Ohio (in my dining room of all places), and two things I've learned: first ya gotta get the bacteria to bloom in the fish tank. That usually happens right away, the water gets cloudy, and then you know they've bloomed/balanced when the water suddenly turns crystal clear. That's when ya start getting mega nutrients. Second, aeration aeration aeration. Get lots of bubblers (like in the confed flag tank). Helps lots
Great set up mate! You've given me some good ideas to add to my system. I'd love to see updates as to how your papaya tree goes as I might plant some myself.
tsk tsk tsk

Nice setup, but you will need a lot more light to grow plants.

Does the water flow stay on a timer like hydroponics? Or would you get root rot with continous water flow?

great set up, but how did you get your tilapia to mate/breed? has it got anything to do with seasons or temperature??

I live in WA state. Like to make a setup like that inside a greenhouse.

what about placing plants such as rice inside the pond?

You know, the more I think about that, the more i like it. Maybe i'll try a semi-submerged trough of some kind to try it...just to say we did!
