I disagree that downloading automatically hurts the industry. While I've never downloaded a comic, I can't say the same for music. In a world that is overly saturated with material goods, downloading is a great way to preview what's out there, without blindly wasting money on something you don't like. So, I would say the opposite, that downloading has expanded my horizons by allowing me to confidently purchase only what I know I like, including many items that I would have otherwise ignored.
yes, ive downloaded comics with torrents, i lost one of the bone books from my bone series by jeff smith, and i thought since i already bought it it would be fair if i could just download it, read it then delete it. so i did, but now i just buy books from Amazon. its easier and safer, and you support the author by buying it.
i live in a country were you can't get access to books, and there's no comic book shops, so that's why i sometimes download comics, BUT if i ever go to the U.S. or some other place where they sell Trades, comics etc. or if i see it in a bookstore , i won't think twice and buy it.
I read THE ULTIMATES, Batman year one, and some Sin City in digital but i would buy those books in a sec if i had a chance.
I download practically every comic I own actually for several reasons.
1.)The nearest comic book store is a 45 minute drive away. So obviously, with gas prices the way they are, making that drive is on a weekly basis is impossible. I like to read my comics the day they come out, so I can keep a finger on the pulse.
2.) I don't like to read my physical copies more than once, for collector reasons.
3.) I have a laptop, so it's nice to be able to take my collection on the road.
I only download comics that aren't collected and are out of print; comics that I would otherwise have to shell out over €100 for on the Internet just for a couple of issues.

here's the thing... I support the artists who create and pour all their time and effort into creating entertainment for the mass media. TV, comics, Music, whatever, I buy their stuff for the most part. They deserve to get paid. But when dose it cross the line to being too bloody greedy?
Ive been a marvel fan for years. comics, movies, even other merchandise i bought and enjoyed. I recently of some lack of funds though, so i decided that until i get money to get it, I'll DL some issues online.
I am a COLLECTOR so I WILL get it one way or the other, just not right now. I just want to keep tabs of what's happening.
So I DL a few issues and lo and behold, Marvel tracks me down and so now I can't even do much online coz I am now being TRACKED!?! For being a loyal fan, this is what I get? it just isnt fair. And as for the losing money part... hello? Marvel? with all those comic books and movies they have, I'm sure they won't miss a few lousy bucks. money hungry bastards.
How far do you go with an itunes for comics? Should they upload their whole libraries and let people buy them online? How should things like first sightings or first issues be priced? Think of the collectors. I would LOVE to be able to pick up comics online just typing in the issue and download, because the availability of comics is the problem for me. Over here they're in our native language, and I hate translations. Ebay is pretty much my only option. And that limits you to one-shots.
how can you buy comics if you live in a small town on southamerica? i'm from chile, final crisis one cost me 10 dollars. how else can you read all ACTION COMICS numbers? or find really olf stuff? not every shop brings new stuff from the state (for example un spain, they are still in the civil war event, couse printers are really slow, not every one speak english, so many people use "tradumaquetas", something like scans, people like me translate them for free, just to give ather a helping hand.
Don't worry about the naysayers Pete, The Punisher is the greatest comic character ever and that's a fact!!!...by the way, Marvel should bring back another of the greats, The Black Widow; they could do so much with her. She's like the female Punisher.
Well, in regards to the whole comics downloading thing, my stance is: Tough.
Comic book companies have been in a decline for the past few decades because they've (mostly) been putting out crap. Recently, this trend has begun to change as the companies began to understand that what the reader REALLY wants, first and foremost, is a good story (rather than awesome things that blow up.)
Right now, the industry faces yet another challenge, which is (of course) the question of illegal downloads(CTD)
If the big companies cannot think of an intuitive approach to this new market, then yes- they are going to die, and it will be their fault for not being creative or engaging enough for people to actually want to buy their stuff.
I downloaded all of civil war a while back (quite a while back, actually) and I ended up buying several of my favorite titles, despite the fact that the stores were no longer had most of them.
Downloading isn't the problem, it's another way of looking at the question.
I have to admit, recently I've gotten into the habit of downloading comics. I've been between jobs and had to budget myself pretty hard on just about everything so comics needed to go; at least temporarily.
I also live in a small town in Scotland, with the closest comic shop an hour and a half away by train so it isn't often I can go out to pick them up.
It really isn't much of an excuse and I feel awful having read all this material but having nothing physical to show for it.
I wish I could download comics but my eyes get tired easily when I read the way I read comics on the computer. even if I could, I wouldn't download though. I like actually holding what I am reading and feeling it and smelling it.
You have to consider the fact that there are a lot of places where there are no comics. My country, Romania, is some of these places. A title pops up from time to time, but it gets canceled fast. Downloading was the only way i could get them, until i found a good online shop. Now i buy all of the stuff i like, but still dl some issues just to check it out, to see if it's worth the money.
Thats exactly what I do. I start downloading comics that I think are interesting, but I'm only curious enough to download. If I enjoy it, then start buying issues. I don't think downloading hurts the industry that much because having a digital copy is no where near as satisfying as having a comic book in your hands.
Great video as usual guys!!! As for pirating ... I got into comics by first downloading and if anything it has made me more of a fan, because now I love the entire industry so much I go out and buy comics every week.
i haven't read manhunter yet but i love the older issues. And downloading comics is great you get comics that are impossible to find or are to expensive, theres no limit to what you can read.
now all tiny super heroes are cancelled robert kirkmans antman and now the all new atom lame those where some great stuff compared to some crap that still out and new shit
What about buying comics second hand? Since they're are no comic book stores in my poodunk town I buy them from auction sites like ebay and other ones like it.
Mostly these are from people who don't own a comic book store and are just selling their stuff. Is there any difference between buying second hand and downloading a scan.
Saying that, I've bought plenty of comics from stores because after reading a scan I want to own the actual thing.
I own a comic shop and download scans of comics all the time. It started, for me, with Miracleman as well.
I think it helps the industry. The more people who get exposed to comics, the better! And better to have people learn of something new online than to drop out of the medium completely.
Also, most of what I download is old (out of print or out of copyright). What I do download that is new, I don't feel bad about since I usually own a physical copy of it, just in a less-available format.
I always download the comics in my contry they are never published and trasport to were i live from E bay is realy hi. I wish i coud buy em diferent sensation holding a comic then reading it on the PC
100 Bullets has to be reread over and over. Too much is going on and the foreshadowing is all over the place. I'll read a book, put it down, and pick up issue 1 and go back through it again. The dialog is also one of a kind.
The Miracleman point is my main reason for supporting scans-- listening to the old fogies in my local shop talk about something as random as Morrison's Spiderman and the Zoids stuff is a little more bearable when I can have someone email me some jpegs on this nonsense so I know what's going on. Kind of.
The thing with "downloading" a comic book is the you don't own the comic book... I know I would rather own the actual comic book, then scans of a comic book...
i spend almost all of my money on comics but as i live in ireland and they are rediculously expencive so i generally d/l what i cant afford, im only a student and dont hav a lot of money

There´s great to download rare Golden Age comics from 40´s and 50´s from web. Most modern comics are useless crap.

Comics are usually acquired online through torrent sites, like everything else.
If anyhting I have gotten more into, and bought comics because I was able to get some scans and get into comics.
Same thing with people downloading music. I have bought more music after I was able to download it because I like a band, or I went to see them live.
