It almost sounds like he was hacking up something at the beginning! Priceless! I love the rooster inviting the hen for "a little party behind the barn!" I don't blame you for not wanting to shove the record on there too far. They are SO BRITTLE!
@tamaracktom It does sound a bit like that and I suspect that Stewart thought that the recording horn would not pick up his foul hacking. It's surprising that the recording engineer didn't catch it and erase it before release but in those early days of recording I'm sure there was less attention paid to this sort of thing.
Interesting early machine. Thanks for posting this. By the way, is there any way to play the last few seconds of that cylinder? I wonder if you play that cylinder on some other machines would help....
@transformingArt Good to hear from you transformingArt. This particular brown wax cylinder has a rather narrow opening - so I can only slide it on this or any other phonograph mandrel as it is here. I don't want to push any more as I could end up cracking it. It's a shame I know because we miss Uncle Josh bidding the listener farewell and getting on the train. I'm sure when it was recorded that Stewart was near or at the maximum recording time limit too. Thanks for the comment.
@Turkeydoodlers Always good to hear from you Turkeydoodlers. It's most interesting to me to find these odd mistakes and unexpected noises on early recordings. It would be great to have a repository site on the net where these odd noises and oops type recordings could be stored as I'm sure there are other people interested in hearing these "What was that?" recordings. Thanks for your comments.
@kirtley2010 If you are very careful and use the proper reproducer and stylus most brown wax cylinders may be played perhaps 20 or more times with only little degradation of the surface. But - the key is to use the correct reproducer that is lightweight and has the right size stylus to fit in the groove as required for that cylinder.
@jednpep Yes, I think about that too. How wonderful it must have been living back then with such fantastic inventions and revolutionary ideas coming about so frequently.
its a shame you dont have a columbia with a 6" mandrel, then we could have heard the last few second of the recording

Sounds like he hacked and spit on the floor, haha. That machine plays beautifully for 115 years ago.

That clearing his throat was pretty neat, I wouldn't have even noticed that had you not told us to look for it, very nice.
