Getting the Whalers back sounds pretty tough, seriously folks. If the Whalers were to ever come back, it would be after the Nords are back. Good luck at that though, it's gonna be pretty tough getting em back.
Hey, the Jets are coming back. Maybe we'll have the Whalers back soon. I mean, I am sure when the Jets play the Coyotes it will be very interesting and if we get the Whalers back, it would be interesting when they play the Hurricanes. Those games will be like as if the Hurricanes and Coyotes are playing the ghosts of what they used to be.
@jubetuber OK hockey fan I got it: Phoenix = Jets, Thrashers = Nordiques, Panthers = Whalers Stars= Seattle and then contract league by some 5 teams less , get rid of idiot Batman eh Bettman (NBA fallout) and please re-establish Adams Division and the Whalers with this great song..... Hey in 80's I was Nordiques fan but hey that was hockey and please lets get rid of those silly commercial arena names !!!! Boston Garden, Le Colisée, le Forum, Hartford Civic Center !!!!! lol
I think Hartford(the city) has to get its act together in terms of the Civic Center (now the XL Center) before the Whalers have a chance of coming back. But I want them back too! The first hockey game I ever saw was the Whale.
"Breakfast come and go, Renee, but Hartford - The Whale? They only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime."
This sounds so 70s but very cool. Sucks the whalers had to leave Hartford but I am glad Raleigh has the Canes. Though the whale should come back at the next NHL expansion me thinks... them and either Milwaukee or Winnipeg, one team in each conference for an even 32 teams mhmm.
Rumor has it that the CT Whale are eventually going to cut their cords with the Rangers and try and make a jump to the NHL. That'll probably depend on whether or not Hartford or one of the surrounding towns decides to build a better arena.
@Tauraunt Hockey is for everyone not just Canadians and besides why should there be more Canadian teams when not many Canadian cities are big compared to Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Quebec isn't really considered Canadian after all, they wanna separate from us.
with all due respect to the people in phoenix and florida...HOCKEY SHOULD NOT BE IN YOUR STATE sorry....hockey is for cold weather states to give us something to do in the winter...NOT TO HIT THE DAMN BEACH IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY...and phoenix to play golf in those months...HOCKEY MUST GET OUT OF THOSE STATES...BRING HOCKEY BACK TO THE MALL...WINNIPEG AND QUEBEC WHERE IT BELONGS!
was watchin man vs. food on travel channel and adam came to hartford and he was standing in the park with a whaler jersey on it was pretty cool to see.
When the Hurricanes first arrived in the Carolinas,they were in Greensboro and were only averaging 5,000 fans a night.The fan base grew slowly after they arrived in Raleigh though.
@BBGOTSKILLZ Dude it's Howard Baldwin, the guy that moved the whalers to Hartford in the 70s, who is running the Wolfpack now. He got the name changed so it would be nostalgic yet new. He wants to create a better market for Hockey here in CT so one day we can hopefully get the NHL to come back. People don't understand that we need to support what we have before the big leagues will come back. I'll be at the first "Whale" game tonight and can't wait to hear this when they score!
(Hey, I can shout out for my team, can't I...and at least my expansion team was clean and didn't STEAL another franchise away to move to some ungodly desert...Anaheim's hot, but at least it's real city, and roller hockey's been big there, so at least that was SOMETHING...what sort of supprt did you see for Phoenix or Nashville or Flordia, Bettman?)
Bob Kraft screwed Hartford !!! I'm from Mass if the Pats did move there I would no longer be a fan. it wouldn't have worked anyway Hartford is Giants country.
Go Whalers....we will always love you. Go Hurricanes same coach,same voice,same equipment t manager...same bloodlines......Ronnie Francis is a proud Hurricane so if lovew Ronnie you love Carolina!
Lets remember that the Whale consistently drew 35-40% less than the league average, was in the bottom 3 in league attendance for the last decade and lost millions of dollars per year in part due to terrible TV revenue. (sportschannel anyone?) i want a team in Hartford but will we go? Hurricanes do draw OK, better than the Whalers could ever have dreamed...I grew up A Whaler fan, followed them EVERY year from 72-73...but I always knew where they stood...way behind the B's where I grew up....
This team now plays in deep south in front of no fans and the ones that do show up are the most uneducated fans in the history of hockey. They have no banner hanging in their rafters saluting the 86-86 Adams Championship and have no banner hanging in the rafters for the retired number of Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe. However they do sport permanent banners with the players name number and year...if they were selected to an all-star game! Pure Disgrace to the best game you can name. Total Travesty
That is not true, the fans in Carolina (who outdraw what the Whalers did) do indeed know hockey, consider the fact than many moved to carolina from the north anyway. Howe never played there so that makes sense....I went to many,many Whaler games growing up, both in Springfield & Hartford & they were always my team but don't blame the fans of the Hurricanes, they didn 't move the team....if we sold out more often this wouldn't have happened. Go "Caines!
@1macboo WRONG! Carolina plays to an empty arena nearly ALL the time (I live in Carolina) They couldnt even break even in operating costs until the 3rd round of their FLUKE playoff run 2 years ago...thats DISGRACEFUL!!! Hartford played in a shopping mall and here you cant even turn a profit playing in a brand new hockey only arena! What a joke. And THE most UNEDUCATED fans Ive ever seen. Just look at your post. "go Caines"!!! hahaha you cant even SPELL your own teams name!!
I miss the Whalers and that great song. I once drove up to Boston to catch an afternoon game and then went south to Hartford and caught the night game there. Ah, good memories ...
Bettman is some what open to the idea of bringing the whalers back but he wants a shit load of support and a new arean to be up to nhl standards so it could happen but realisitcally, if it does, it won't be for atleast another decade.
Take the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Nashville Predators, Anaheim Ducks, LA Kings, Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes, and Phoenix Coyotes and move them up NORTH!!! Play hockey where it's MEANT to be played!! There are many northern cities (Like Hartford) who are dying for a hockey club and can support one, too.
@mach6904 On-ice success has nothing to do with people going to the games (ie Phoenix finishing 4th in the west last year, but last [by a mile] in attendance)
@mkailov13 NOT happening with LA , Dallas,and Anaheim under ANY circumstances!! L A, and Dallas/Minnesota have been active for 40 years,and those cities had a fan base for years before that.Anaheim has a rabid fan base also.Bottom line,you don't need snow to play hockey,and you demonstrate a level of idiocy that defies description!
If they lose, people down South won't support the team. People up North, however, especially in Canada, will consistently sellout games even with a losing team.
@Airman241 THE NHL HAS TRIED IT. IT HAS FAILED EVERYWHERE EXCEPT DALLAS AND TAMPA. EVEN CAROLINA STRUGGLES TO FILL UP THEIR ARENA. LOOK UP THE ATTENDANCE STANDINGS AND ULL SEE.
I spoke to Howard Baldwin Jr. and he was in Hartford a few months ago and he is trying to negogiate something, an NHL team looking for a new home. Lets keep our fingers and toes crossed!!!
@NessMencesal I like those ideas,the main goal is to bring the NHL back to Hartford.After all,the Bruins need the rivalry.
BTW:How about the Blue Jackets going to Cleveland.Makes sense,and you won't lose the Columbus fan base,in fact,the Cleveland market would be great too for the NHL.They might learn thier lessions with the old Barons in the mid to late 70's.
@blank77 Eh, Columbus is similar to Hartford: white collar, hard working people who go absolutely insane when they score. Plus they had to build the Nationwide Arena just to get a team, they had tried for years!
Or better yet, split the home season: 1/3 in Cleveland, 1/3 in Columbus, and 1/3 in Cincinnati! Great source of revenue with new fanbases, plus columbus is only about a half an hour from them both.
@NessMencesal Humm,that's not a bad idea,the Blue Jackets could not only represent Columbus,but all of Ohio.Good idea.
If anything,I think the Coyotes could be the most likey to move to Hartford.Because of the attendance thing over in Phoenix,plus all the political mess the state of Arizona is involved in won't help matters.So if they decide to leave Phoenix,Harford is a welcome opition.I hope the city gets the NHL back.
@blank77 Well think of my columbus idea like the (then) Kansas City-Omaha Kings (now the Sacramento Kings) splitting their home games between KC and Omaha. Besides, Columbus's logo is the state flag of Ohio wrapped around a star, indicating that they represent Ohio.
And Phoenix is likely going to Winnipeg. We now have what we lacked in 1996 and Ice Edge's deal is falling apart according to the CoG
@NessMencesal Yeah,I could see the Coyotes going back to Winnipeg.
After all the NHL is a league of second chances.Minnesota:losing the North Stars,and successful with the Wild.S.F. Bay Area:lost the Golden Seals,big a huge gain with the Sharks in San Jose.Ohio:Failed with the Barons,doing good with the Jackets.So Winnipeg,and Hartford could have hope with the 2nd chance stories.Don't know about Quebec City though,not as long as Montreal has a say.

how about a team in madison. WI.
vegasgoldbaron 1 year ago
@vegasgoldbaron Madison is WAY to small.
avengemm9dog 1 year ago
Bettman is some what open to the idea of bringing the whalers back but he wants a shit load of support and a new arean to be up to nhl standards so it could happen but realisitcally, if it does, it won't be for atleast another decade.
MrKrinkle90210 1 year ago
whow knows youmight get tampabay or pheonix

Take the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Nashville Predators, Anaheim Ducks, LA Kings, Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes, and Phoenix Coyotes and move them up NORTH!!! Play hockey where it's MEANT to be played!! There are many northern cities (Like Hartford) who are dying for a hockey club and can support one, too.

Agree!

@mkailov13 too bad the Canes have a cup
mach6904 2 years ago 2
@mach6904 On-ice success has nothing to do with people going to the games (ie Phoenix finishing 4th in the west last year, but last [by a mile] in attendance)
NessMencesal 1 year ago
@mkailov13 NOT happening with LA , Dallas,and Anaheim under ANY circumstances!! L A, and Dallas/Minnesota have been active for 40 years,and those cities had a fan base for years before that.Anaheim has a rabid fan base also.Bottom line,you don't need snow to play hockey,and you demonstrate a level of idiocy that defies description!
icedogfan1 1 year ago
@icedogfan1
If they lose, people down South won't support the team. People up North, however, especially in Canada, will consistently sellout games even with a losing team.
mkailov13 1 year ago 2
@mkailov13 why do so many northerners hate hockey in the south like i said elsewhere would you not want the sport to grow?
Airman241 1 year ago
@Airman241 THE NHL HAS TRIED IT. IT HAS FAILED EVERYWHERE EXCEPT DALLAS AND TAMPA. EVEN CAROLINA STRUGGLES TO FILL UP THEIR ARENA. LOOK UP THE ATTENDANCE STANDINGS AND ULL SEE.
NessMencesal 1 year ago
@NessMencesal the recession has affected eveything including ticket sales not just in the NHL but all leagues
Airman241 1 year ago
@mkailov13 tell me are there enough cities to support those teams
Airman241 1 year ago
I spoke to Howard Baldwin Jr. and he was in Hartford a few months ago and he is trying to negogiate something, an NHL team looking for a new home. Lets keep our fingers and toes crossed!!!
doubleff53 2 years ago 12
@doubleff53 The next NHL team to move automatically goes to Hartford and becomes the Whalers.
wcastle9110 1 year ago
@doubleff53 Still need a new arena, except for if it's immidiate. Here's what I think:
Phoenix --> Winnipeg
Florida --> Hartford
Atlanta --> Quebec
Islanders --> Halifax
Bettman --> Hell
NessMencesal 1 year ago 35
@NessMencesal I like those ideas,the main goal is to bring the NHL back to Hartford.After all,the Bruins need the rivalry.
BTW:How about the Blue Jackets going to Cleveland.Makes sense,and you won't lose the Columbus fan base,in fact,the Cleveland market would be great too for the NHL.They might learn thier lessions with the old Barons in the mid to late 70's.
blank77 1 year ago
@blank77 Eh, Columbus is similar to Hartford: white collar, hard working people who go absolutely insane when they score. Plus they had to build the Nationwide Arena just to get a team, they had tried for years!
Or better yet, split the home season: 1/3 in Cleveland, 1/3 in Columbus, and 1/3 in Cincinnati! Great source of revenue with new fanbases, plus columbus is only about a half an hour from them both.
NessMencesal 1 year ago
@NessMencesal Humm,that's not a bad idea,the Blue Jackets could not only represent Columbus,but all of Ohio.Good idea.
If anything,I think the Coyotes could be the most likey to move to Hartford.Because of the attendance thing over in Phoenix,plus all the political mess the state of Arizona is involved in won't help matters.So if they decide to leave Phoenix,Harford is a welcome opition.I hope the city gets the NHL back.
blank77 1 year ago
@blank77 Well think of my columbus idea like the (then) Kansas City-Omaha Kings (now the Sacramento Kings) splitting their home games between KC and Omaha. Besides, Columbus's logo is the state flag of Ohio wrapped around a star, indicating that they represent Ohio.
And Phoenix is likely going to Winnipeg. We now have what we lacked in 1996 and Ice Edge's deal is falling apart according to the CoG
NessMencesal 1 year ago
@NessMencesal Yeah,I could see the Coyotes going back to Winnipeg.
After all the NHL is a league of second chances.Minnesota:losing the North Stars,and successful with the Wild.S.F. Bay Area:lost the Golden Seals,big a huge gain with the Sharks in San Jose.Ohio:Failed with the Barons,doing good with the Jackets.So Winnipeg,and Hartford could have hope with the 2nd chance stories.Don't know about Quebec City though,not as long as Montreal has a say.
blank77 1 year ago
@blank77 QC is Bettman's #2 priority after Winnipeg. Plus Montreal is hosting an exhibition game against the NYI at Le Colisee Pepsi on October 2.
NessMencesal 1 year ago
@NessMencesal I stand corrected about Montreal.Now that you mentioned it,I miss those royal blue Nordiques uniforms.
