@10KJackson i always wondered if he was a dirty fighter, or had a philosophy of let the ref pull me off because amount of people that say "oh i didnt tap"
@10KJackson He only did that a few times. In the begining of the video he did that to the lig what kickboxer guy. He only kept the choke in because he was bitting and scratching Royce
@10KJackson dude dont judge ur saying tht cuz u didnt see the fight before whr the other guy tapped but the referee didnt see and Royce was almost screwed over cuz he alrdy let the guy go from the choke hold
royce gracie idiota...
this guy did beat wrestlers, boxers, kick boxer, thai.boxers, karate fighters, fung fu fighters...
the family gracie called out the boxing heavy weight champions of several eras, joe louis and mike tyson were challenged by the family gracie and the wanted no part of them
i respect royce gracie because he is one of the few men(with bruce lle) who did show that he could beat a stronger and bigger man in a fight, not only words!!. RESPECT ROYCE GRACIE
@Hannibal4eva does not matter the height , he is 6´1 but he weighed around 79kg (175 pounds) he was hardly a big guy, i am 6´1 and 208 pounds of muscle and still i don´t think that i am a big guy, a big guy is above 6´2 and NATURAL 220 pounds,o not built in the gym. gracie faced much heavier guys

@thiboss57 In the early Ufc tapouts were a means of signaling the ref you couldn't take anymore, if the ref didnt see it, it didnt count. Nowadays, there's judges, ref knows what to expect (back then they were like rear naked what? that a secs position?) they can easily review the tapes and such to check if it was infact a tap out.Royce wasnt being nice thats a given, he was being smart at the time. Looking over his career, most of his opponents walked away with only minor injuries.Great fighter
BAH, I bet holding the submission until the ref broke up the fight and called it was the best option during these matches. Fuckin lay off the guy, he whooped ass and thats that!!!!!

the best no holds barred fighter to ever live, the UFC fighters today are a joke with their rules and weight classes, not to mention that they are all jack of all trades and masters of NONE.
@MrDitto30 Yeah what bitches following rules. They should be like this royce gracie faggot and keep choking them after the opponent taps. gracie is a fucking joke.
Why to keep beating or choking when he's already the winner? The fight in another country often decisions are questionable, the judge helps his compatriot. In this video you can see that many have already lost the fight before the signal but WHERE THE JUDGE to stop the fight? Currently decisions are still questionable imagine what it was like 15 years ago. sem dúvida, o melhor que já houve, técnicamente.
One of the best MMA fighter ever for sure, but I think he has a lack of respect for his opponents. Keeping the fight even after the guy tapped and even broke an arm. This should be one of the reason for MMA to be fordbidden in a few countries... Top fighter but bad behaviour. You should have the higher respect for a guy ready to fight against you in a cage, why the need to keep beating or choking him when you are already the winner of the fight?
@thiboss57 he is an ass indeed, but it is to play the psychological factor... it's different for the opponent to be in a cage with a guy that will try to break your arm even when you are taping than knowing that if you tap you will save your arm... you just play it safer if you know you can lose your arm in the smallest mistake... that way he reduces the chance of the opponent executing spinning backfists, flying moves or anything out of their discipline
@thiboss57 That's why here in Brazil many people lost respect for his family's behavior, like beating people in parties, in the street...still a great fighter though...
@thiboss57 The reason he doesn't stop after the guy taps is because he once lost a fight because the referee didn't notice his opponent tapping out. He let his guard down and stood up after seeing his opponent tap, and his opponent surprised him and won the fight. After that match, he didn't stop when he saw his opponent tap out, only once the referee pulled him off because then he was sure that the fight was over
@thiboss57 YOu have no fucking clue what your talking about....the ref in those days didnt either. Royce kept the hold until the fight was stopped. And he was good at this time, but not at MMA, because MMA means Mixed Martial Arts. I dont see him using any mix what so ever... The fighters of today are real MMA fighters because they train MMA. Not taking anything away from Royce as we can thank him for starting the UFC. But your comments are fucking lame.
@77jcket ... Why being so aggressive and disrepectful? I was just pointed out the fact that he kept the hold sometimes even when the referee stopped the fight... Why telling me what MMA is? Or that Royce Gracie started UFC? Who don't know that.... I mean, you can find it on Wikipedia, come on. Your response is just poor and useless. What's your point except trashtalking me?
@thiboss57 No he held the submissions because guys would tap and then he would let go and they would say later they didn't tap. He wanted to prove gracie jiu jitsu without controversy
@thiboss57 If you see the whole UFC 1 you will notice that he used to stop as soon as the tap came, but then when he fought Ken Shamrock, Ken tapped and Royce let go but the referee didn't see that. So then Ken grabbed Royce's foot and Royce was all like : this guy tapped man !!! After that fight he used to hold on the submission even after tapping out the opponent just to make sure everyone sees it.
@thiboss57 I understand what your saying, but there are another side to every story. You talking about having respect for his opponents, but what if I told you the kickboxer did not show Gracie any respect. Well that happened, and that was why he hold the chock after tapping.
@thiboss57 no..it dosent matter if he taps.. the fight s over when the ref stops it...what happens if the ref dosent see it...you let go...and then lose the fight
This is why Royce Gracie is the best of all time: he fought back in the early days of ufc when there where no rules, no rounds, no time limits, no protection (gloves, mouth guard, or cup), no weight classes, no preparation for your opponents, and on top of all that, having to fight as many as 4-5 times in one night. If that's not enough explanation for you, I don't know what is ...
Chrisivan85 he's the creator of doing with men on the ground. Pussy fighting. And i know i and many of the guys he fought could kick his ass in a real fight with his hands and feet like real men. Pussy
@chrisivan85 ROYCE GRACIE Caught: 6/14/07, following his unanimous decision win over Kazushi Sakuraba at Dynamite!! USA. Tested positive for: Nandrolone...you were saying?
@skargaemer89 no lol ken shamrocks fight he tapped 4 times and the idiot ref did not see it and when he fought that tall savate fighter he bit royce on the ear and he and wanted to make sure the ref saw so he chicked him a little longer
@mexiduro Lol, what the fuck do you even know about MMA? All Mexico has is that crappy nacho man stuff. Now go try to cross the US border and get shot by the texas border patrol :D
@leonardoecco86 u racist fuck a lot of mexicans are good fighters such as roger werta he was selling oranges when he was a kid hoped over the boarder now hes fucking up the americans in the ring
@Gurmansinghsidhu First of all its Roger Huerta... learn how to spell you dumb fuck. Second, he lost 5 of his last 6 fights. So to be more precise, americans are fucking him in the ass every fucking time he steps into a ring.
@leonardoecco86 try saying that to anderson silvia he defended his tital multiple times dumbfuck. you ignorant fuck jui jitsu started in japan and in brazil this small man fucked up all your american fighters you stupid fucking cunt you idiot
@Gurmansinghsidhu I am brazilian you dumb fuck. This whole discussion started because a low life nacho eater was disrespecting Royce. Also, if you wanna speak english learn how to do so properly you fucking moron.
@Gurmansinghsidhu First of all its Roger Huerta... learn how to spell you dumb fuck. Second, he lost 5 of his last 6 fights. So to be more precise, americans are fucking him in the ass every fucking time he steps into a ring.
well it doesnt matter. if royce would be in his prime now he wouldnt beat hughes, gsp, anderson sylva,bj penn etc etc etc now the fighters train seriously and royce was lucky to met poor quality fighters without serious and solid training program
@mexiduro If it wasn't for Royce Gracie, guys like hughes, gsp, silva and bj penn would be working at a gas station filling up cars. Gracies gave a huge contribution to what is known nowadays as MMA, so show some respect bitch.
@mexiduro people like you are so deluded that you dont realize the "ufc champions of today" would be no one if it wasnt for guys like gracie... it took gracie showing off his ju-jitsu to force everyone else to learn ju-jitsu
this also was apparently back during a time where refs didn't know how to pay fucking attention to what's happening lol, pretty sure that one guys arm got broken because the he tapped FOUR times in a row before the ref saw what was happening.
@garbosinho Only way you'd make me your bitch is to head over to Ohio and show me how you'd do it :) So unless you're willing to do that, fuck off.
I happen to train gracie jiu jitsu as well lol, which has NOTHING to do, once again, with the fact the ref let that shit go on entirely too long. You're just a bitch without anything of merit to add to this argument, so you resort to insults. Typical youtube fag ^_^
@YINGnYANG86 Royce is a legend, but I can't stand posts like these. For one, he wasn't even the top BJJ practicioner in the family; that would be Rickson. Then there's the fact that Wallid Ishmael made him look like an amateur. Again, he's a UFC Hall of Famer for a reason, but he wouldn't be nearly as successful today. He probably wouldn't even get talked about, because Demian Maia is 1000x better at the only thing Royce was ever known for.
I am a MMA convert. I glad for the evalution. When I saw a dude get kicked in the head and his teath fly out I thought that this "sport" is bullshit. Now it really is a sport because they have the interests of the participants in mind. I'm a JBonesJ admirer and Judo student so u know I got love for Gracie. Peace!
Royce Gracie's contribution to the martial arts community,to MMA and UFC specifically was to show how important it is to be well versed in grappling, ground fighting and joint locking, but if he had faced the world class strikers competing in MMA today, who are also aware of BJJ, he would not have had as much success as he did.
Pure BJJ fighters fucking suck ballsack at MMA , Thales Leites, Damien Mia, Royce Gracie, werdum all suck. If they can't take there opponent down they just get smashed. And they all do that awkward thing were they attempt a takedown fail an lay there with there legs open like there trying to give birth.
@XxMerc050xX GSP doesn't use Karate in his fights... the guy has a black belt in several different martial arts. About Machida, well... Shogun and Bones send their best regards :D
@leonardoecco86 GSP does just not to the extent machida does. Karate is good if you don't rely on straight karate mix it up with other martial arts like machida. Yes machida was destroyed by shogun and jones both of whom are great fighters. Just because he got beat by top fighters doesn't mean hes not a great fighter, he completely destroyed Rashad Evans who is a great fighter
@ETXBULLDOG not true....he had hard fights even back then with guys that were big and strong. many of these guys were not in great shape(including Royce) and the guys today are trained in everything and are carved out of granite! He is the baddest ever though because without his domination MMA would not exist! he made everybody else have to learn BJJ or at least how to defend it, watching these early fights showed he was the best!
@yobolo1 Because it was FORBIDDEN to wear gloves in the early UFCs! Wearing gloves actually promotes more striking, the Gracies understood it very well, - that's why they prohibited to wear gloves in the early UFCs!
@YimBob318 the whole video is about Royce, Royler is no where in the video and in a documentory he said he didnt let go cause earlier in the fight the guy tried to cheat and bit his ear
@YimBob318 Reason being is because the other fighter bit him on the ear while they were rolling. Much deserved to be choked out. Hell, I would have held it longer.

@thiboss57 he is an ass indeed, but it is to play the psychological factor... it's different for the opponent to be in a cage with a guy that will try to break your arm even when you are taping than knowing that if you tap you will save your arm... you just play it safer if you know you can lose your arm in the smallest mistake... that way he reduces the chance of the opponent executing spinning backfists, flying moves or anything out of their discipline
eavaria 1 month ago
@thiboss57 naa most of his submissions ref did not even see like against ken shamrock and just watch this he clearly tapped ref did not see
Gurmansinghsidhu 1 month ago
@thiboss57 he did that cause guys would make excuses saying i didnt tap or something so he made sure eveyone knew the guy tapped
anthonyrivero415 1 month ago
@thiboss57 I blame Ken Shamrock. He tapped Gracie let him go and they almost had to start again.
doneckreddahl 3 weeks ago
@thiboss57 That's why here in Brazil many people lost respect for his family's behavior, like beating people in parties, in the street...still a great fighter though...
SidneyAugustoDaSilva 3 weeks ago
@thiboss57 The reason he doesn't stop after the guy taps is because he once lost a fight because the referee didn't notice his opponent tapping out. He let his guard down and stood up after seeing his opponent tap, and his opponent surprised him and won the fight. After that match, he didn't stop when he saw his opponent tap out, only once the referee pulled him off because then he was sure that the fight was over

@thiboss57
The one guy bit Royces ear so of course hes gonna hold onto the choke!
The only guy who didnt deserve it was Jason who almost got his arm broke.

77jcket 3 weeks ago
@77jcket ... Why being so aggressive and disrepectful? I was just pointed out the fact that he kept the hold sometimes even when the referee stopped the fight... Why telling me what MMA is? Or that Royce Gracie started UFC? Who don't know that.... I mean, you can find it on Wikipedia, come on. Your response is just poor and useless. What's your point except trashtalking me?
thiboss57 3 weeks ago
@77jcket you are gay go play with tarffic
stugats77 2 weeks ago
@thiboss57
The referees were unsure of how to stop the fights back then. Now they know to just jump in the midle or pull the guy off him.
Bak3dB3an 3 weeks ago
@thiboss57 No he held the submissions because guys would tap and then he would let go and they would say later they didn't tap. He wanted to prove gracie jiu jitsu without controversy
anthonyrivero415 2 weeks ago
@thiboss57 submission, you dont let go until the ref stops you. ive heard this from a few UFC interviews
sure gracie knows he has won but does the ref/judges/crowd
look at 1:42 that ref was miles away, if he had let go, the fight would have continued
when it comes to submissions you may feel the tap, or feel a bone pop, but its the refs job to stop it as soon as possible, not the fighters.
MrTelboy1992 2 weeks ago
@thiboss57 he has the upmost respect for the sport and his opponeets but you dont stop till the ref pulls you off..thats the bottom line
HI276 2 weeks ago 5
@HI276 thats not the bottom line, if the other guy taps you let him go, thats it
tomtrigo149 1 week ago
@thiboss57 If you see the whole UFC 1 you will notice that he used to stop as soon as the tap came, but then when he fought Ken Shamrock, Ken tapped and Royce let go but the referee didn't see that. So then Ken grabbed Royce's foot and Royce was all like : this guy tapped man !!! After that fight he used to hold on the submission even after tapping out the opponent just to make sure everyone sees it.
MazenAlsharief 2 weeks ago
@thiboss57 I understand what your saying, but there are another side to every story. You talking about having respect for his opponents, but what if I told you the kickboxer did not show Gracie any respect. Well that happened, and that was why he hold the chock after tapping.
HaakonWik 1 week ago
@thiboss57 no..it dosent matter if he taps.. the fight s over when the ref stops it...what happens if the ref dosent see it...you let go...and then lose the fight
HI276 6 days ago
This is why Royce Gracie is the best of all time: he fought back in the early days of ufc when there where no rules, no rounds, no time limits, no protection (gloves, mouth guard, or cup), no weight classes, no preparation for your opponents, and on top of all that, having to fight as many as 4-5 times in one night. If that's not enough explanation for you, I don't know what is ...

well it doesnt matter. if royce would be in his prime now he wouldnt beat hughes, gsp, anderson sylva,bj penn etc etc etc now the fighters train seriously and royce was lucky to met poor quality fighters without serious and solid training program
mexiduro 1 month ago
@mexiduro If it wasn't for Royce Gracie, guys like hughes, gsp, silva and bj penn would be working at a gas station filling up cars. Gracies gave a huge contribution to what is known nowadays as MMA, so show some respect bitch.

this also was apparently back during a time where refs didn't know how to pay fucking attention to what's happening lol, pretty sure that one guys arm got broken because the he tapped FOUR times in a row before the ref saw what was happening.

@bloodriotiori Why dont just fuck off. Gracie was the best and fuck the rest.

garbosinho 4 weeks ago

He probably wouldn't even get talked about, because Demian Maia is 1000x better at the only thing Royce was ever known for.
knicksown427 1 month ago
@knicksown427 Indeed; I feel that if Demian's surname was Gracie, he would be getting rated much more highly.

@leonardoecco86 GSP does just not to the extent machida does. Karate is good if you don't rely on straight karate mix it up with other martial arts like machida. Yes machida was destroyed by shogun and jones both of whom are great fighters.
