I watched this when I was a kid, I though it was memorizing along with other movies such as French Kiss and Before Sunrise. Really captivated my imagination for some at a very young age.
I have never watched this film and still can't bring myself to. I was brought up watching the black and white version of Great Expectations (the one with John Mills and Valerie Hobson as the leads). I have also read the book twice for English in school. I live in London and can't understand how the book makes sense not set there???
I recently traveled the world (California - Germany) to marry my finace; however, she gave me the engagement ring back after only 3 days; & on Christmas night she called a taxi to pick me up & take me to the airport. I was supposed to spend 18 days with her (my soulmate or so I believed). I flew back to California and then decided to visit family in Florida. Every crisis is a blessing, yet we are often blinded by emotional attachments to see these blessings.
OMG this movie has left a scar in me tht will be there forever when i was just in fith grade i watched it and i still remember were i was and wt i was doing it looked amazing through my eyes like something i had never seen before i fell in love <3
this movie has haunted me ever since i was little, I'm 17 now, I don't know when it came out, but I saw the trailer as a little girl and the music and the scene with the fountain were stuck in my head, so now I accidentaly click on the trailer and I was like ... no way.... finally I found it!!
I have seen this movie when I was 9, somewhere in 2002 on TV.Even that I was young,I liked the story cause I'm a painter myself. When Internet became more popular,I wanted to download this movie, but I didn't know the title, neither the actors.I have searched many sites, and I couldn't find it.Until this day, January 11th, 2012,and I'm going to download it right away and watch it again, and since that I'm 18 now,I hope that I will understand the whole movie and all the things that I haven't before.
@NenadlPopovic I just did that, well I saw it when i was real little and i loved it....but i didnt understand it well, now, today, i saw it and.... its amazing, i loved it even more...
i did watch this movie when i was 15(1999 on the tv).I didnt familiar these names Gwyneth Paltrow or ethan hawke or robert deniro). I just started to watch middle of the movie and when it end i was dreaming about my first love.LoL
2000, I started to read the book. And i was really shocked. I remember i was very excited "oh this estella so similar to my estalla" or "oh finn, i know you".:D
how i am silly.:)and then i find movie and i watched again again and again.not so much again. only 2 times
saw this movie as a kid around 8-9 i totally love it, i saw it actually many times and i never knew the title and now at the age of 15 i was trying to find the title when the name of Gwyneth Paltrow pop in my head and there's a voice telling me check her movie list check it and da-da she is in the movie!!
That fountain scene has been haunting me ever since I saw this movie, when I was really, really young. The whole atmosphere was just so utopic, and it had been wondering about in my head, with me not having a clue about who were the actors, or what the movie was even about, for so long, and I'd been desperately trying to remember it for years. I even started thinking it was just a figment of my imagination. Just a few minutes ago, the scene just appeared in a promo thing and so did the title. <3
believe it or not, the director does not like his movie, Cuaron said he dislike the movie as a whole but also said that is beautiful shot by shot... breakes my hearth i love it is my top romantic movie ever. when i thick of ideal love i can not but to remember these...
@zimmability it's the title of the movie itself, great expectations by charles dickens although the original story is way different and focuses more on some other things than seduction n lust :/
I don't expect adaptations to be similar to novels; it never happens. However, as an independent film [once again], I thought the overall film made itself look bizarre, cliche, and void all at the same time as it struggled to be "artistic and deep." The storytelling was alright in the beginning, but once they "grew up" it descended into the most amateur script I've seen. It's one of those movies that get lost in the back of the blockbuster shelf.
this movie is so stupid. the book starts off with PIP not FINN in the graveyard, in KENT, ENGLAND, by his parents tombstones. The whole first few chapters are him in the MARSHES with the convict, and then later searching THROUGH the marches with sargeants. this fim is stupid. the beginning DOES NOT START on the beach in NEW YORK, AND THE CONVICT DOES NOT TRY AND RUN AWAY TO MEXICO.
the whole point of it being in england is so PIP is sent away to LONDON to learn how to be a gentleman.
@TheFlynn13 this movie is actually very moving and painful to watch at times, but never stupid. Of ocurse its only an "adaptation" not an exact copy of the book or UK version. Its an American film so of course our "London" would be NYC. Use your imagination and the movie might be enjoyable.
At the beginign of the trailer i was so amazed. Those kid i though its gonna be a really good movie. But then when they grow up the trailer seems to change into this modern mainstream lovestory. Pretty boring. They should have stayed in a different time and a different environment. The old house was amazingly cool
This needed to be two movies. They tried to cram so much into this 90 minute movie. It starts out when they're kids and goes up to them in their 30s. So they brushed through a lot of details.
This is the hottest I've ever seen Gwyneth. Especially when she's in the turtleneck tank top and he lights her cigarette. Why doesn't she look like this all the time? She's gorgeous in this movie.
I have just finished the book, and I have one simple word to describe it: fucking-awsome! On another hand I am still some interested in watching this movie, but thiking at it like at some completely diferent thing. I am sure that if I tryed to "see" the book I would be gravely dissapointed.
@worldsconnector Believe me, the movie is awesome but i am sure the book is different type of experience. Is the strong romantic aspect of the story present in the book?
@VicodinAddicted, I have'nt had the chance to watch the movie, yet, but I hope I will. Now to answer your question: No. Not if you expect chemistry, and lust, and sex (the things that we are so used with these days). But Pip is always in love with her, from childhood until the very last page. he does'nt wabble, never thinks about anybody else, he is surreal for me. no man can exist and be so. I think the book is worth the read, if not for the amazing character, then for the briliant writer!
@worldsconnector You are right, there is no such a person, but love is something we are all interested in and we like to idolize, fantasize and exaggerate... The writer must have been really into some blond babe when he dedicated whole stuff to her. If you do watch it, tell me what you think...
Any person could use their mind to change your movie. I might talk to another person in front of you. Don't change your movie. If you want to talk to me, then create a dream for me. I will talk to you here.
You were married, and you and another woman were superglued? Another woman said horrible stuff about your wife to steal you from your wife. Your wife is a lazy celebrity. Your other woman is very evil. Go back to your wife. If you must stay with a very evil woman, then don't let her effect you.
I watched repeats of your films, because I loved your films. Our almost marriage is in the past. I don't think of it anymore. Thanks for using your mind to heal me. I feel a lot better. My exboyfriend is the singer of the cult. He used his mind to change my mind to specific beauty for specific letters. Men like me a lot, because of my personality. We're not destiny, because of a letter. I need to talk to people. You don't need to talk to people. We're different about talking. We're not soulmates
Low sound to leave. Wife chose low energy. You left your wife, because you wanted a romance with Cinderella. You have someone. In the past I wanted to marry you. It was impossible to write you a post office letter. People forced me to take zyprexia pills to calm me down from suicide attempts. I see impossible every day. I forgot you. Soap opera dating. Right now I'm married the singer of candlebox. I love the arts. I watch lots of films. I listen to lots of music. I attend modern ballets. Etc.
@rexlakio this is one of my favourite movies...i did not know that its based on a book but i think that the actors did great job and the story is very good..its a really moving film!
so, this is based on great expectations by charles dickens, right? It seems almost exactly the same. Is this seriously a real movie? bcuz i seriously wanna see it
Yes, his name is Pip in the book.. I wish people would stop comparing and contracting the book to the movie,,when the creators of this clearly wanted to go in a different direction.. If it didn't share the title people would be ranting on how it was a total rip off on his novel.
Great Expectations Book > Great Expectations Movie
Just saying. I've read the book first and its A LOT better than this movie. The movie was like a joke to me. The book actually made me cry at the end. :)
What an interesting concept, an update of Great Expectations with a stellar cast. I'd never even heard of it and looking it up understand it didn't do to well. Experiments with classics often have a rough ride with critics and audience. Too bad. Why does the opening music sound like the theme from Miller's Crossing?
This film looks really gud. I know a girl like that. I like her but its as tho she has no feelings for me in return, or for anyone, because shes had a troubled past and doesnt know how to love. Thats what this trailer reminds me off. Does this film hav a happier ending than my life story at the minute?
@deathwings11 It's been a while but I recall the story as a caution against obsession. You have to make yourself take things in stride sometimes b/c your emotions will want to go all in. I'd advise you not to try and be her boyfriend, simply be her friend. Date some other girls, there's nothing wrong with just dating. If you gain her trust then things will progress. She may need a lot of patience and understanding. Read 1st Corinthians Ch. 13 and pattern your actions and behavior after that. GL
This movie is part of my life.

favorite movie of all time. do watch it if you haven't, but don't compare to the originals...

Does this film hav a happier ending than my life story at the minute?
deathwings11 1 year ago
@deathwings11 It's been a while but I recall the story as a caution against obsession. You have to make yourself take things in stride sometimes b/c your emotions will want to go all in. I'd advise you not to try and be her boyfriend, simply be her friend. Date some other girls, there's nothing wrong with just dating. If you gain her trust then things will progress. She may need a lot of patience and understanding. Read 1st Corinthians Ch. 13 and pattern your actions and behavior after that. GL

@pjohn56 Yeah, its best to play it cool, not get too involved and be patient. Thanks, friend.

@Whiplashx92 That's why it was promoted as ''loosely based on the book''. The movie was amazing that's right!
