This is actually how you obtain him in the final fantasies. You have to kill him before you he decides to slice and dice you to pieces.

when time runs out, he uses Zanketsuken (sp?), which instantly kilsl your entire party, and is UNBLOCKABLE. it also instantly kills all non-boss enemies, with a few exceptions.
