John Byner (impressionist/comedian) hosted this syndicated show, which was sponsored by the milk-dairy industry. I used to watch it all the time and remember seeing a bunch of up-and-coming artists like Joe Cocker.
You can easily tell that Gram and the boys wore makeup and did some old teeth whitening tricks for this video. Given the serious volume of drugs most of them were doing at the time, especially Gram (except for Pete) They must have surely looked like shit. Look closely.
you know i have heard people say chris was not happy but he looks like he is having fun to me, i think they were all pretty stoned about this time, and really if you look at it now what gram was doing its not all that outrageous,
Love the jagger immitation by Gram. Remember he was friends and hanging out with Stones while they were recording "Exile on main Street" so that's probably where the imitation came from. Pluse I love how it looks like Gram is "stuffing his pants" like they always did back in the day with those skin tight pants. LOL Too funny but what a great song and talented guy. RIP Gram. You're greatly missed by millions I'm sure.
gram was the man, no doubt. but everyone rides on somebodys shoulders. this particular beat borrowed from doug sahm. check out the"crazy cajun sessions" by sir douglas quintet. most recorded in '66. hard to find, but worth it.
I love it, I think Gram was already bored and ready to move on he was a trust funder so he could do whatever he wanted to do, he figured this was their RS song so he shook his ass a bit so what
aww heck...debate is great...who's better, who's best - in this case, who cares? Kristoferson wrote: "Me and Bobby McGhee" "For the good times"
" Help me make it through the night" " Why me Lord"? "Sunday Moring Coming Down" Plus those the films with the great Sam Peckinpaugh!!! All from 1968 to about 1974 !!!! Gram had "Hot Burrito #2" As they say on NFL Game Day: "Come on, MAN"?????
The fact remains that Parsons was a middling talent hands down.!!
Take a contemporary artist back then ,say for instance, Kris Kristofferson could wake up in a semi drunken stupor in 1969.......write down a better song than Gram Parsons could ever dream of.....then fart....roll over....and go back to sleep!!
With all due respect, DCartRow, (and that phrase indicates the hammer's coming down!), Gram was inconsistent in his early years, but by the end of his life his work was consistently good, often brilliant and always moving. Nothing against Kris K., who wrote some fine music.....but in 45 years he hasn't achieved half of what Gram achieved in 6 years.

@DCartRow its not just about a song being written its about the vision and the change. Kris is a great song writter but he wasent doing anything different than anyone else. Gram brought in a whole new genre of msic to the worl with country/rock. the eagles, allmans,..they all took grams music and ran with it. Its his ideas and vision that makes him what he is and he wrote some damn good songs. songs with meaning. brass buttons about his alcoholic mother....hot burrito#1 a beautiful song,
gram probably wasn't exactly ecstatic himself when chris hillman turned up dressed like somebody's dad come to break up the party. chris hillman: great harmony singer; gram parsons: visionary genius. i rest my case.
Why are so many people raggin' on Gram? He pretty much single-handedly created a music genre; and his stuff with the International Submarine Band, Byrds, Burritos and solo are all excellent. At least he was having fun with the video shoot. Chris Hillman...not so much.
hey you know ive always heard chris wasnt to happy about this video but notice 2:24 and some other times he looks like he may have been having a pretty good time, anyway i agree with you gram changed music forever and people should take notice
Best thing parsons ever did was die. Highly overrated!! Reminds me of a ritalined out little punk and his career would have quickly spiraled down to Travel Lodges and County Fairs by 1976.
sorry but, as influential as Gram was, he was NOT a great vocalist...he had noticeable pitch problems that plague almost every one of his recordings...the Burritos were cool but Mr. Parsons is a bit overrated
Pitch problems? Who are you comparing him to Julie Andrews? lol It's not just his singing Gram Parson fans like but it was the character, an almost mythological being who wrote or co-wrote some very nice songs but never experienced commercial success. He was a pioneer that influenced countless groups. If anything he is severely underrated.
That was hilarious. Even with that song this is a more silly video than I'd expect. They must have been in really good moods that day, or at least Gram was.
hahah...laffin. The Flying Burrito Brothers were playing "Uncle Sams"in Minneapolis with Frank Zappa and The Mothers. Being the good desk clerk that I was, I passed the passed some smokeable to them and was rewarded with a ride to the gig and back stage with them for the show. Frank could not be told....he didn t smoke......what a blast

I love the burritos and i love gram...but can someone tell me what grams hand gesture was halfway through the video ? It looks like he was flipping someone off not that im saying that but i thought id ask someone elses opinion
@Illalung You really cant tell as they blocked out his whole right hand at the part of the video but it had to be something offensive for them to do so back in the day
one but cannot fail to laugh at this amazing video - everytime i see Gram doft his hat at the sky i burst into hysterics. I think Gram is high as a kite and it makes it all the more fantastic
Oh my...for being such a good musician, it looks like poor Gram was not a very good dancer (or prancer). And he shouldve kept the hat on; the humidity was not doing his hair any favors. How did they convince poor Hillman and the other guy to pop their heads through the trap door like a bad Monkees episode? And the dialog at the beginning ... seriously? But despite all that, this video put a HUGE smile on my face, it's a wonderful time capsule. You gotta love the tight pants. Good song, too!
At this point, Gram was hanging out with Keith Richards and was greatly influenced by The Rolling Stones (as this video demonstrates). No matter what the debate about Gram Parsons, one thing was for sure - he was a great singer and helped spearhead the country rock scene. The band in this video was pretty solid with Bernie Leadon (later of The Eagles) on guitar, co-founder and ex-Byrd Chris Hillman on bass, the great Sneaky Pete on pedal steel, and ex-Byrd Michael Clarke on drums.
@junkie4vids Funny thing is: I hear also Rolling Stones influence in another bandmember here: the 'almost sloppy' guitar solo by Leadon sounds very like Keith Richards at the time.
Who cares? We wouldn't know those guys names if not for Gram. I am not inviting a Byrds and Eagles lecture here. I like Poco as much as the next guy. Lets be reasonable here, look at FFB AFTER Gram. I know where i wanna make my home...
Yep, you're speaking to the choir here...Bernie, I believe, wasn't too thrilled either but Chris was always more outspoken.
By this point Mr. Parsons had become an embarassment. If you ever watched the "A" and saw Mr. T. get bent out of shape when they were going to be flying someplace, well, Gram apparently was the same way. They had to wheelchair him out, high as a kite, in order to fly to a gig.
That's funny they didn't seem to show it too much during the video. Maybe it was after the fact? Maybe some of their friends mocked them for Gram's actions? After reading a transcript of a meeting between Gram, Keef, Michael(Ha! Jagger), and Anita I can see what this is all about. It's like a wedge or a lover/friend quarrel between Chris resentment of Gram hanging with Keef and Gram getting back at Michael I mean Mick. Whateva' said Gram lol It's all fun and good. .
I should ad. Michael Jagger used to not dance around too much on stage. Then he met Tina Turner and the rest is history. That's what Gram is talking about. Jagger probably thought he was a bad influence on Richards. It's evident in the tape transcript I made reference to. Which incidentally is pretty funny.

Where does it say I suggested Gram was learning something from Tina Turner? I said Mick Jagger learned how to dance from her. That's what I read. Gram is taking shots at Michael I mean Mick right here.
@rockon1898 I wouldnt call it jagger antics. they might resemble the way mick moves but if you look at grams movements and the rythem and beat of the song his movements are in time. hes just dancing to the music and feelin the groove. mayvbe u would like it if he just sat in a chair and sang the song?
@rockon1898 Poor old Chris....all anybody wants to know about is Gram; the wise man knows his limitations and the fact is Hillman had the charisma of a caravan site. Gram was lazy and had shitloads of charisma...that's life.
