you didn't tell her to reorientate herself to the room at the end of the visualization...she could be trapped in her mind staring at the Lincoln Memorial forever!
it's quite simple, its just suggestion, and when he asked 'what colour shirt' well anyone would say black because he was wearing black. not to say that its simple to carry out just a pretty staighth forward tequineque. :)
awsome... what I'm interessted in: i desperately want to do some smaller tricks of this kind on my own.. like sugesting a card or something.. but i'm always struggeling with the problem that all these kinds of tricks are made in english and i can't quite get the corner to find usefull translations. I'm swiss and we don't even have the same deck of cards style (ours have pictures of flowers, and bells and stuff) ... any suggestions how to make up my on act and what else i could look for?
Well you don't really need to make up an act,all you have to do is learn to read people well enough to tell what they will do next ,like what word in a sentence is next, what person will they talk about more and when they lie, just little things and build from there.
The first ones are probably the same for 99% of people, but Washington DC? Then Capitol follows and the shirt would have been black for me too. But why Washington DC?
It is an inversion of psychoanalysis. They are strange questions that people can ask that seem to have no bearing, but your answers reveal alot about your personality. Also, people generally have the same thoughts, emotions, and needs.... but we tend to individualize ourselves more than we actually are individual from other people. Magicians have the advantage that they know these facts and most people are unaware of them.
This was a great effect. I liked the subject, too--she looks like she had a lot of fun with this! Too bad she's unable to share in your feat, as the audience is. One idea: you could place each written response in her hand after she makes it, and then when she opens her eyes she'll be able to see that you wrote down her responses before she gave them (she'll know that because of the number of sheets you give her, etc.). Not perfect--but she'd be able to participate in being amazed.
It's funny you should say this. I know for about 85% certain which people are willing to follow my suggestions (not talking about hypnosis); I think 80% of this group belongs to my fav. the somnambulists. I can easily lead these people with suggestion, without testing them in advance) and achieve similar effects; Sure not 100% full proof but if an effect fails you don't dwell on it.
Perhaps, I mis-stated when I said 'mentalist'. My actual business card says 'Psychological Entertainer'. Most of my stuff (like the great Derren Brown) is based on psychology, eye access cues, muscle reading, suggestion, micro-expression. I guess our words are different. I HAVE done this effect for RANDOM audience members, but not as a COLD OPENER. You must size up people with minor effects first. And btw: my psychological effects don't alwayz work! 'hope this helps!
It's interesting that the VAST majority of people (even perhaps many psychologists) aren't even aware that stage hypnosis acts are "faked," i.e., the key to stage hypnosis is simply finding people who will PRETEND to be hypnotized--and who can be socially "squeezed" into "making an act work."
And, yes...in a weird sort of way, even somewhat pretending to THEMSELVES they were hynotized.
Are you a hypnotist? I am and I can assure you that we do not fake it! I detest that! I can agree that we select people that are highly suggestible (the so called somnambulists) and of course some psychology is in play to "bully" them in to submission.
However I do always verify whether there's truly a trance state; Bynum scale. If not these people are "awakend" and send back.
There's no need to fake, because ppl are highly suggestible even in an awake state.
These effects are based on psychological (subliminal) suggestion and manipulation. You are subliminally placing thoughts and feelings in someone's mind. Some mentalists claim its 'psychic' mind-reading... which of course, is a sham..
I understand, but did you speak to her before the camera was rolling? I am wondering if the video is of all your suggestions with her, or you spoke to her too off camera
I model alot of my psy effects on Derren Brown's effects. He has a few books and e-books available. That is a good place to start. One thing: make sure that the documents are offically written BY Derren Brown. (there are alot of 'fake' DB texts out there... Let me know how you make out.
Thanks for commenting!! Anyone who knows me knows that I do not use stooges. I am a paid, working Mentalist, and it would be bad for my reputation (as well as un-ethical). Every effect I do, I also do on stage. The audience and people at this party are 'real'. I met most of them for the first time. Stay tuned for more DB effects! Thanks again!!
He has done this for a "real" audience. He did this effect in Washington DC actually. I was there and saw him perform this same feat, just the shirt colour was different and it was the Washington Memorial.
Thanks for commenting! As my other reply said, I am a working mentalist, performing many shows. I do not use stooges.. Its unethical, and no-fun! If U understand NLP, hypnotic suggestion, etc. you'll see that many things are possible. I did many effects at the H-Ween party.. Stay tuned for more vids!
Toruga can do this in front of a random audience I've seen it. When you pay close attention you will notice the what is going on. It's called psychological association of the common.
What Toruga probably did is that he suggested earlier the word Capitol to her. So maybe some thing like: You better write that with Capitol letters (it's called seeding).
Obviously we associate the Capitol with DC, bride weather (in most cases). The colour of his suite suggest the colour of his shirt in her mind.
If I were to believe that (and I MAY in a very limited sense), the reason would be that one could have TIME and OPPORTUNITY to set it up--much less likely in an stage/audience situation (I could go into this in more detail).
Bottom line: If you can interact with numerous people personally (party-type situation), you can find someone you CAN setup like this (among those you CAN'T), and select them, and likely make it work. It's also necessary to have a "path" to follow if it DOESN'T work out.
Well, as a working mentalist (parties, or stage), you do a number of effects and reads on people.. in order to ASSESS their psychology and how suseptable they are to suggestion. As I said, I did a number of effects and 'tests' to determine who would be a good type to do certain effects with. I often start off by asking different people seemingly meaningless questions, and then pay close attention to their answers.
Preliminary questions would be something like: what is the 1st number betwen 1-10 that pops into your mind, whats the first thing U see when U look outside every morning, etc. What they say and HOW they say it will give me a sense of their psychology. Then I will casually try to anchor a word or concept with a few people, and see if I can retreive it. this is how REAL mentalism works.. You must assess people's psychology with other effects/tests FIRST. U are right: this effect is NOT an opener
hi awesome performance im a mentalist as well just getting started though i love derren brown effects he's a big idol of mine how can i work on perofrming stuff like this? and how did u learn how to do these? i would love to learn if u hav any tips and advice thanks alot

@zakiemon Yes.. the reason is that I patterned this effect after Derren Brown's 'Opera Effect;.. Just google it, and watch Derren's version..

He says "vivid image" and "sights and sounds" and naturally she is going to imagine somewhere outside and bright - easy suggestion there.
Washington DC?? I don't know where he got that - that was pretty good.
Then he says "very Prominent" and "Iconic" - capitol is easy too.
Washington DC is crazy though.
olinselot 2 years ago
Yeah, that's kind of true, but given that he says those thing AFTER he receives the answers, it kinda defeats the purpose doesn't it ;)

A "medical" state of hypnosis DOES exist, that is measurable physiologically. Surgeries have occasionally been performed on hypnotized people.
People on a stage are NOT hynotized--by that physiological criterion.
Yes, I think Chrisitians falling to the ground falls EXACTLY under the "stage hypnosis" rubric.
