something i've noticed about these guys (particularly anthony) is that while some other performers when they sing a song for a performance (i.e. not actually as part of the show) they tend to just sing it as themselves or half in character, but anthony really gets into his character - he really sings as mark... that's what i love about his performances.

As much as I love Rent, I've always thought one of its problems is that it lacks a concrete story. Yeah, they all love each other and they fight...and so? What is the point? Seriously, take the music out and Rent loses its charm. In my opinion, both the musical and the movie have the same problem, although the movie doesn't include Good-bye love, which is awful, because there is even less story to tell.

I see where you're coming from, but you also have to take into consideration that, in many cases, a plot doesn't matter in a musical. Rent has far more plot than, say, Cats, which has almost no plot whatsoever (I might point out here that Cats is the second-longest running show on Broadway to date, after Phantom). Yeah, I think you're right, maybe I'm trying to look for a plot in a type of media that doesn't realy on plots. Anyway, there are some musicals that have a nice plot and they are superb: Les Miz, Miss Saigon, Jekyll and Hyde, The Fiddler on the Roof, etc.

I think...you miss a lot of what it means to be a musical. The words that they sing don't tell the whole story. The music behind them is a description of their thoughts and surroundings. If you took the voices out, there would still be enough of a plot to paint a good story just through instruments.

Jonathan Larson died before he could really perfect RENT. They didn't change much out of respect for him. It's not a matter of "they love each other, they fight." It's about an era where AIDS was eating people up, and the people who didn't have it were also tortured because their friends were dying. It's about outcasts of society joining together to form their own society. It's about living life and being engaged with each moment and being your own person. The music adds even more feeling to it.
