CH-53D's with HMH- 463 PEGASUS' in KMCAS got external fuel tanks added in late 82/early 83. Had to install stops on .50 cals to keep from shooting them. Oh, and no it's not a Pavelow.

MH-53J and M (Pave Low III and IV) with the USAF (AFSOC) are out of service. They now use the Osprey V-22.

USMC as well as GERMAN ARMY AVIATION (GAA) and ISRAEL AIR FORCE (IAF) still have the twin engine H-53 as D (USMC), G, GE, GS GA (GAA) and CH-53 Yassur 2000 (IAF) in service. Mexico bought some five twin engine 53s from Israel, and also IRAN bought some many years ago.

USMC and USN also use the triple engine H-53E, as well as the Japanese Self Defense Forces (JSDF).

I was an Aerial Gun Instructor with MAG-24 Gun School at KMCAS, Hawaii in the early 80's. HMH-463 flew CH-53D's. When I got there in early '81 they didn't even have the external fuel tanks. Those were added in '82 or '83. I loved that aircraft. KBay rocked with the 1st Marine Brigade on board. 3/3 Grunts on one side and MAG-24 on the air side. TA-4F's, F-4-S, UH-1, CH-46 and CH-53's. We were ready to go to any dance anywhere!
