  • IF I... had an ounce of what mick had in the voice, in taking what he heard in what he found and making the music he did... & coming from where he came from... & musically from the punk beginnings and the politics & the musicians that were part of it. He gave music a voice. Not only that, a beautiful voice too.

  • Whether one grows up in the gutter collecting scrap, or if one if one if abandoned by a parent, this kid has GUTS! I continually praise this talent, how his music has continually brought me to my knees...Mick has what it takes! WE should praise what people have, not what they DO NOT HAVE! I, too was abandoned as a child; I have nothing, to share with the world that is as real and loving as Mick.

    Love to you all,

    Bridgette

    xooxo

  • see what i'm talkin bout less is more...this is so much better

  • while it isn't the original and will never be close i'm glad it exists as my grandma was a simply red fan and even though i'm not, i listen to this version out of respect of my gandma's taste. to all the haters: imitation is the biggest form of flattery

  • Well said!

  • he does sing it well and is a legend, his early stuff is genius but bill withers wrote in respect for his gran, nobody should be covering it

  • @pastronge Because covering it somehow disrespects his grandma?

  • He as a nice voice and his version is not bad, he was abviously inspired by Bill Withers' version which resonates more with me because I too lost my granny in 2010.

Overall a great song that almost anyone regardless of ethnicity can relate to.

  • What is it about Mick Hucknall that brings out peoples vitriol?.....I admire him as a talent, (hes one of my favourite artists actually).....I do seem to notice that he markets himself a little too slickly these days...like the ongoing end of Simply Red as a band....C'mon, he WAS Simply Red...everyone else were side musicians....I guess when you grow up stealing lead from gutters to make ends meet, marketing yourself to the max is appealing.....

  • I initially liked this cover, but I don't like people to change the lyrics-- "Put yourself in the spirit's hand" just doesn't ring true.

  • why did he say spirit instead of Jesus?

  • that is a straight up, knockout offence...

fuck you hucknell you multitalentless ginger fuckwit, i hope you never get close to another classic again..

  • fucking dire. sorry mick, you've done some great tunes in your time but this cover kills a great song. i'm sure looking back you probably realise this, but hey, if i could sing as well as you i'd have knocked out some of my favourites as well, regardless.

  • :-)

  • Well done!

  • Well....I do read the Bible! :-) I think do to the fact that Bill Withers is speaking of his childhood, and just happens to be black, it has a southern feel to it. Jesus is important here, because "Grandma" is speaking of Jesus. Mike Hucknall, from an article I read, says he is agnostic, so I take "spirit" as to mean anything really, new age or whatever. But I do like speakwhnspkn2 comments! Thank you!! I would encourage folks to watch the original Bill Withers -- it's touching! :-)

  • @jewelgazer you really dont read the bible do you?

  • Yeah, just listened to Bill Withers. Red had guts to even approach this song. AND taking Jesus out from the original was just plain wrong. I take back my previous words. Mike did not pull this one off. Bill's got the soul because he wrote it. Should have listened to the original first before commenting on the remake!! :-)

  • Ok, is this insane -- but I got to thinking he chose to sing this song since his own mother abandoned him and I think he lived with an aunt (maybe grandmother or her influence as well?) Yeah, he's not black, but maybe he could relate to this song in some way, minus the slavery aspect. What do u think?

  • @jewelgazer I think Mick Hucknall does a fine job here. It's not Bill Withers, but then that's the great thing about music. Two artists can do the same song and each of them bring their own nuances and spirits to the song. This is an interesting version of this classic song.

  • So were you a slave then Phoenix? No white people have ever been treated badly which is why I guess they have no soul. Is that what your saying?

  • @timjmoran I completely stick by what I said. This guy may have a nice voice for some songs but this right here ain't one of em. I honestly think that experiencing growing up in the south and being connected to slavery so close to those who experienced such conditions conditions the soul. That's why it's often called soul and this fellow don't got it, but I still respect your opinion.

  • simply red = douche bags

  • He took Jesus out of the song and replaced it with spirit. Sort of ruined it for me.

  • Okay, I just listened to the original and this and I only came up with one thing... NO WHITE BOY NO!!!! Your ancestors have to have endured slavery or been deeply connected with freeing slaves in order for you to sing this song correctly. What the heck is up with him replacing "Jesus" with the spirit. Damn shame. Thumbs down!!

  • @Phoenixface09 Oh come AWN, man!! have to have "endured slavery " to sing this tune? what a load of Krap!! And he really does a pretty decent job, actually- sure,

it's waay different from Bill W's .. but I think it's still a nice interpretation.

  • @Phoenixface09 Actually since Jesus ascended back to heaven and sits now at the right hand of the father, The Holy Spirit is exactly what we have to depend upon. So Mick Hucknall is dead on the money. It is the Holy Spirit that dwells in men, woman and children that enables them to overcome the painful situations expressed in this song. Maybe if you read your bible more and stopped worrying about who was or is being oppressed, you'd have known that.

  • Mick's got a great voice- but you can't beat the original. This is Bill's territory.

  • I love Simply Red! and all their songs

  • I love how so many different singers have covered this song. All people recognize and need the caring of a loving family.

  • Love it, Love it, Love it - what more can I say??

  • lol!! this is like bill withers on helium

  • I get it that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but really!

  • he's so arogant that he thinks he has some soul NOT keep it to your own genre

  • This D.B. would be better off covering Tiny Tim. Stay away from our cool American music.

  • class singer

  • i love his shirts ;]

  • My band opened up for these guys in the 80's in Providence, RI. Small stage. They were great.

  • Are you serious? 23 years ago? Get over it brother, move on! Bet you're not still with the girl eh?

  • @anridapu Whats the matter mom didn't treat you well and you don't look back on your past with good thoughts??? Why don't you MOVE ON to a place a little more NEGATIVE so you would feel more at home!!

  • @leebusandlibus hOW YOU DOING ASSHOLE !!!! Love to meet you

  • @leebusandlibus Where the hell did these insults come from? I suspect you may have the wrong person. I'm not going to indulge in retorting, though I'd suggest that you may want to think twice and check that you've got the right person before you go off shooting your silly mouth. Better yet, maybe you could seek professional help and then you might avoid the need altogether ...

  • hey RED you were a PUSSY when you sat next to me at a bar 23 yrars ago--you tried to pick up MY girl...you are a piece of shxt..im glad your career is over lOL

  • @DavelovesRealMusic BETTER THAN YOUR CAREER NEVER HEARD OF YOU UNTIL THIS NEGATIVE CRAP GET A LIFE. If you don't like something why spend time bitchin about it? OH don't have a life I get it. Sort of??

  • @DavelovesRealMusic From what I've seen and heard he still has a pretty good career. May not be big in US anymore but nevertheless successful in the rest of the world. By the way 23 years ago is a long time to hold a grudge.... just let it go brotha, let it go!

  • @DavelovesRealMusic I m like bob Dylan...never forget. But I GET your point...it IS a VERY long time ago......time to move on as you say ::)

  • This version of the song sounds kinda 'eh

  • Hadn't heard this song, thank you. Now will check Streisand's interpretation. who is Bill???

  • Bill Withers, the original singer/writer. Famous for quite a few songs that everyone knows, just not everyone knows who he is (Ain't no sunshine, Lean on Me).

  • Thank u for telling me who he is and what wr his other songs. I like his songs but like M. Jacksons interpretation of 'Ain't no sunshine...." as well, thank u again

  • 007maral you are really going to open yourself up for a lot of thumbs down and negative replies by NOT knowing who Bill Withers is and that he wrote Grandma's Hands and was the first to record it.

  • Let's not forget Gil Scott-Heron's version of this song as well.......he did it justice!

  • I love Bill's version. Didn't even know that anyone had covered this song. Its one of my favorites, especially since my Grandmother raised me. But I must say Mick did a greeat job, more soulfull. But then I do like Simply Red.

  • Barbra Streisand did it brilliantly.

  • So sorry...who is Bill? I'm a huge Hucknall fan and thought I had everything he ever sang and stumbled on this great song! I know this is old because of Mick's dread locks! Love this song...he knows how to sing soul! Is it Billie Holiday??? He can immitate her in fun ...sounds JUST like her!

  • @boonesusan More soulful than Bill Withers, you gots to be joking!

  • he runed it makes me mad

  • I'm sure Bill is very disappointed, this guy sounds to soft for something that requires a real man.

  • agree 100%

  • I'm with you there. Bill sung it so much better. This guys ok

  • Mick is just fantastic as always so good i love this song i didn't hear it before

  • Great voice!!!

  • Amazing,

     Wonderful.

  • I like Mickey... but this is shyte.

  • If Eddie Murphy was doing an imitation of a white person singing this song this is what it would sound like.

  • Hilarious! Ie; Richard Pryor's "Please pass the potatoes."

  • Geez! You are absolutely right! That DOES sound like Eddie Murphy teasing a white person's singing! If I were to close my eyes, I would think that it was him.

  • @raskine, You wrong for that, but LMAO nonetheless.

  • @raskine ROFL so true!!

  • I just love great Mick's mellowish soulful touch of this classic!!! A Mancuso's glowing heart nurtured deeply into Blues, Soul and R&B. I just adore his style, fusion and rendition! What a synchretic, magistral tenderful touch exuding from his throat and soulful veins....My God!

    Just incredible!!!

Thank you so very, very much for this posting of yours, my friend! Greetings to the UK from Mexico City!

  • ...and thank you for sharing! :o)

  • what a bad version... he lacks soul

  • That's one thing he doesn't lack.

  • he sounds like a fairy. his voice is too high - unbluesy for such a bluesy song.

  • give over.

  • Very nice version of a Bill Withers song that I've always loved.

  • I had never heard this song before but I really like it. Anything Mick Hucknall sings sounds great to me! I just love his voice.

  • well i think bill withers version is much better because it is about HIS grandmother.

  • Sounds good, but not their best.

Try SR's performance on a Montreux Jazz Festival 1992. Mick put a lot more passion into it. Sounds absolutely breathtaking...

  • Everything Mick sings gets wonderful in his voice and performance... "Michael, don't you run so fast..." so cute, so charming.... Great Mick!

  • Only Bill sings his song good

  • this is a good version and mick makes it more relax and like you or not like you

  • this version sucks big time. no soul at all! there are good cover versions of bill withers songs, this is definitely not one of them...

  • I Love This song!

    And I Love Gingers!

    They Are Sexy!

  • I love All Mick too!!!

  • Nice.

  • this song is so moving. i love the lyrics- they are so simple, yet they carry a lot of meaning.

  • This song is by Bill Withers, and I feel that Bill holds it down much better

  • geweldig

  • Comment removed

  • it's the most beautiful lyric I have ever heard:-) incredibly touching, makes me remember my own childhood.

  • Mick Hugnall...the best singer in the Universe

  • don't like this version, but Mick has soul; and he's no homo; my boy got more quality in the day than anybody on youtube

  • From someone who 'BUTHERED' the word Butchered...well done.
