tempo shift means that you can adjust the tempo (or bpm) of the song without effecting the pitch. sometimes when you try to match a slow hip hop track (75 bpm) with a pop track (110-115 bpm), the hip hop track will match, but sound really chipmunk like. tempo match allows you to match songs that you want to use without loosing (to an extent) the pitch of the track.
You're backwards on the function of the master tempo. When this is set you can adjust the bpm without changing the pitch (or octave) of the track. This is especially useful if you're playing a track with vocals if you need to speed up the track without chipmunking the vocals.
bpm is beats per minute. Pitch is the % tuning you need to adjust bpm. So obviously, if you are playing one track that's 120bpm and mixing in a track that's 135bpm, you are adjusting the pitch to the negative side for this.
i love my cdj 800s there reliable and good for scratching i can use these for 8 hours straight (i actualy have) i just purchased another pair of these 3 months back
very good decks would recommend these to anyone. wait about another 2 months pioneer coming out with something better tho
Master tempo is a way of making sure the pitch of a song doesn't change when you increase the tempo/beats per minute. And only the CDJ 400 and up have a vinyl mode, the CDJ 200 and the older discontinued models don't
it sets the vocals and all the sounds so they dont sound like chipmunks when you speed up or the other way around. so you can basically play hip hop at a 140bpm with normal melody and sound
see that's the bullshit. you all want to be DJs but don't understand how important it is to be able to adjust the TEMPO of the song without altering the KEY of the song. just because you're only playing other people's music doesn't mean you don't have to know about music. Djs ARE musicians.
Thanks for the tutorial, very useful. Just a note about the subject of increasing tempo without increasing pitch. It has a feature called pitch lock, which means the track can be sped up, but the actual pitch will not change. It's useful for speeding up slow tracks, ie hip hop funk, rnb etc without getting the helium vocal effect, hope this helps.
thanks man,i have a question though,i just bought these 2 cd-players but now i wonder if it is compatible with my old mixer..i think it is ofcourse but i wanna know for sure..greetz Remy
As long as your mixer has RCA inputs it should be fine. If you only have 1/4 inch.. get some 1/4 to RCA converters, and there is no reason it wouldnt work :) What kind of mixer do you have?
i just looked in the booklet and saw that it has rca connectors so its fine:)dont laugh but its a JBSystems MX4 lol..thnx for the useful tutorial, its a weird feeling to say goodbye to vinyl in a way but as far as i can see it now those Pioneer cd-players are just incredible!i'll have to wait a week though, only one in stock:s but thnx again mate!
Hi, just thought I'd clarrify- the master tempo changes the speed (i.e. bpm) of a track without changing its pitch. It only really sounds good with very small adjustments. Big adjustments can make for some interesting effects but it will not sound like the original track.
400's are the creation for anyone starting out, hence the vast effects and cheaper price.
800's are to be bought with a sick djm.
I get a little confused when people compare just the 400's and the 800's. After all, there is no comparison as whilst they are both cdj players, the comfort such a diverse style respectively, there is no comparison. It would like comparing a lion and tiger.

400s for people practicing to get their own style.
ahhhhhh im undecided about the 400's or the 800's. I have the money and i actually found the 800's for cheaper, the 400's are going for $629. each.. would the DJM400 mixer go well with these?? I am just starting out and these are my first cdj's..
I'd definitely go for the 800. The 400's are great as well, but are quite smaller than the 800. it doesnt geive you the same feel as it does with the 800, but thats personal I think CD-J 400 got those effects with it but with a decent mixer (like the djm 400) it's not really neccesary
I personally favor the 800's. But you cant really answer that question, its like asking, what do you recommend, apples or oranges? Both the 800 and the 400 are great, just depends on what you feel comfortable with, or need. I personally dont need the EFX on the 400's, so i stick to the 8's
Serato is just a source. You still need either a turntable or CD player to play whatever tracks are loaded into Serato. Serato with CDJ's is just about one of the most epic setups!
just to clarify the master tempo for you and other viewers....
when 'master tempo' is engaged, moving the pitch fader will increase/decrease the BPM as it would normally, however the 'pitch' of the actual song doesnt change, i.e, master tempo will prevent the 'chipmunk effect' on vocals if the BPM has to be increased a lot to facilitate beatmatching.....
buddy please advise which one is better except the usb connectivity advantage out of pioneer cdj 400s and cdj 800s??? which one scratches better?? thanks waiting for your advise...
If you are going to make a purchase based around the scratch feature, you will have better luck with the 800. The firmware is the same for both, however just the size and feel of the 800 is more natural - the 400 is more compact, but im sure some might prefer that over the larger, all prefrence i guess. If money is not an issue, and you have to pick between the two SOLELY for scratching, go with the 800
tempo is measured in bpm. pitch is the tone or key. so it is impossible to change the tempo without changing bpms. the pitch change will not speed up the actual song speed but it can give u the "alvin chipmunk" or the "slow motion" sound :D
i don't get it why ppl actually go for pioneers. these cdj 800 and the denon dns3500 are exactly the same price yet the denon 35's are way out of the cdj 800's league. i say add a few more bucks and get the denon dns5000 which can be compared to the pioneer cdj 1000's but at a better price!!! trust me pioneers are overated!
urafag - I tried them this week and was dissapointed in the platter feel and reaction with the sound. I agree with you, but not exactly the reasons you stated :)
But if you see, i think pioneer 1000 are better, all famous Dj's use them, you can watch any video on youtube we can't escape them, they're universal players.
Not really a good reason to get the MK2's, if you're going to mix live (I assume you wish to) you should ALWAYS use wav's and at least 320kbps for quality of sound.
Master tempo allows you to change the BPM without changing the pitch/key of the song. This is important if you do harmonic mixing, and need the songs to stay in their original key. Now you know :)
When You're rockin those decks it don't matta how loud they are!!! I actually like the fact that they're like that because you feel it when You push cue or play!!
Thank you soooo much for posting this. I've been watching the DJ Tutor too, and I was hoping he'd give a good overview on CD players. Anyway, can you do some more?
With regards to the 'Master Tempo' button: What it does is retains the KEY of the tune. What is a key? Look up harmonic mixing in youtube search. Most DJs think only about beatmatching. Fact is, without mixing in key, you'll never have what it takes to be a good DJ. So all you beginners, get your beats in, then move to mixing in key. Good luck.
The wide pitch is really good for doing cool crescendos and crazy tech house stuff (James Zabiela), also if you slow a song exactly 50% you have half time where 4 beat is now 8 beats long so you could slow a song down and mix in a new song at completely different tempos but still beat match them. Gabriel and Dresden did that in their 2003 essential mix for radio one.
Very good video. Well made. 'Master tempo' lets you change the speed of your track without affecting its key (pitch). When 'Master tempo' is turned off, you're changing the speed of your track affecting its pitch also. Play a track and listen to the difference for yourself.
