Im a big Police fan, but an even bigger Rush fan, and this song blows! YYZ is infinitely better than this "demo" song Andy threw together after smoking some herb. Grammies are a popularity contest and the Police were more fashionable at the time to the old white men running them.
I like both instrumentals. In fact, Sting apparently became power hungry by 1980 restricting Andy and Stewart to two instrumentals on Zenyatta Mondatta.
Wait, why are people comparing Rush and the Police? Two good bands, but achieving very different results. From different scenes. Even from different continents!
OK, I get it. Both have three members. Big deal. And what's all this about "YYZ"? These songs are NOTHING alike. YYZ is fast and dynamic. This is slow and brooding. C'mon guys!
lmaoo even though this won a grammy, sting absolutely hated it and refused to play on it, and stewart copeland only played on it because nobody else could play drums XD
did yyz really loose an award to this??!? theres no comparison between this and yyz, yyz definately shows that the members of rush at least put some work into it.... unlike this song.... i love the police but i have to say this song sucks
I have to hand it to the haters this time: this track is a waste of time. I mean, yeah, I like it - and I liked it when I had this LP at age twelve - but it strikes me as something the band whipped up after lunch one day in the studio, maybe in response to their producer: "Hey, boys! We need one more track to reach LP length. What have you got?" That sort of thing. It would surprise me if Sting had anything to do with the writing/arranging at all. It has Summers all over it.
I'm a fan of the Police and Rush, and I realize that the Police was an influence to Rush's 80's music. This particular song was something Andy wanted to record. Sting didn't even want to take part in it, so Andy did both parts. Stewart kinda felt like he needed to. The only reason this song went on an album was because someone dug it up. And that is better than YYZ how?
Didn't Geddy Lee already acknowledge the influence the Police played on them as a band and how that resulted in "Moving Pictures"? Both bands obviously appreciate each other musically. Move on people, nothing to see here.
I would agree with the police fans that this song is good. However rush people do have the upperhand here. Behind my camel goes nowhere. It sounds like this pattern would be played behind a verse. it doesn't have a beginning or end. YYZ goes through different stages to keep you captivated.

how on earth did this beat yyz ? this song is awful... it has the same beat and chords throughout the entire freaking song... yyz is so much better than this
Wow! That's amazing! Almost three minutes of the same notes and beats played over and over again until you're almost dying of boredom? Rush didn't have a chance!
@FriedChickenofDeath6 The thing is, YYZ is not cool enough to make you SCRATCH YOUR EYES OUT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS like this awesome piece of perfection ¬¬

@Craigvn The only reason why Rush is not inducted into the hall of shame is because they are canadian plus I think Rush is way to good for that place anyway. This song in my opinion is quite good and industrial.

I agree 100% I love the Police. However YYZ is probably the best Rock instrumental of all time, while this isn't even top 10. However I do like this. That is why I am here.
If you can find anybody, including the police, that can seriously listen to both songs back to back and not realize that YYZ is far far better, I would be extremely surprised. That is why 30 years later it is still a controversy.
It's a cool song. But it's got nothing on YYZ. I don't know if I feel more sorry for Rush or the Police in this situation. Rush don't get what they deserve but The police don't really deserve all the flack that they cop. They didn't ask for the reward.
With all due respect to The Police, but there's NO WAY IN HELL this could've beaten YYZ. King Of Pain is awesome for instance, but this is boring, repetitive... Never took Grammy too seriously, but now I'm sure that crap is not about music, it's something else.

@MoonchildMindaugas2 A song like this can be a very flexible song to play with many options and variables to play with. Still, it's a wonder how this beat YYZ for a Grammy in Best Instrumental.
This Song is in my opinion not good the only reason it did won a grammy award is in the poorly managed pop listeners that was on the grammy awards commitee that year, Yyz is by far a way better instrumental song than this I don't even understand how an outrageous call like this can happen someone should understand that music is not about popularity or money it's about how a song can touch someone's emotion deeply and this song did not do that for me. (Not insulting the rest of the police music).
The snare seems to be a piccolo. At least the drums sound sort of acid jazz, even tho the "song" is total crap and has nothing to do with the style mentioned.
@carribou92 the reason why this song has so many dislikes is because it beat Rush YYZ on the Grammy awards. And YYZ is a much better instrumental than this
This is not a great track by any means, but it's really not that bad. There are tons of experimental/instrumental/electronic bands whose EVERY SONG is worse than this. It's at least kind of haunting; it's got a dark melody that'll probably stick in my head for a little longer.
i don't drum, and I;m not a great guitarist, but I could play this shit easy, and this beats the masterful musicianship of rush on YYZ, not trying to put down the police or anything, but seriously, this song blows
@EnergizerBunny804 yeah ok, i mean theres only about...lets say 1000 videos of people covering yyz on youtube alone, im not trying to call you out, but seriously, your comment blows
@AntJoCac Sure they are, they are great musicians and Sting is a fucking genius, but please, even a deaft knows that this song is a huge piece of shit
@AntJoCac Sure they are, they are great musicians and Sting is a fucking genius, but please, even a deaft knows that this song is a huge piece of shit
@AntJoCac we do its just we are all bitter becuase this beat out yyz for the grammy. sting is really good but this is just shit. like my reaction this song is "oh thats nice menu music for a third party video game no one has ever heard of"
@AntJoCac I love rush, they are my inspiration for a lot. I just came in touch with the police, and they are awesome too. But nobody can touch rush(A)
Loved this since it was released. Loved The Police since Andy joined them. Rush? Pfft. Great musicians, undoubtedly, but that YYZ? Bombastic crap. Just a vehicle to showcase their talents. This, on the other hand is a slow, dreamy, whimsical TUNE! My 2c.
@weirdunclebob YYZ is actually a very good way to express how they feel when returning home. The intro is in morse code and it spells YYZ because that is the toronto airport code. I think YYZ is just much more dynamic and it's a feel good song that sums up all their travels and expresses their happiness for returning home.
Behind my camel is a good song, but nothing happens.
@PLAYDOUGHBOI1017 yeah.......... seriously........... this is the WORST and most boring instrumental song i've ever heard. and seriously....... "behind my camel" is the last thing you'd expect this creepy and boring instrumental to be called.
"De gustibus non disputandum est" like Romans Says. Song like song I think this hm non - Police sound take from cos Andy Summers was the author this one.
Probably some members of that Jury are dead now. It seems that some people who argue here were quite far from being alive when that decision happened. A sense of injustice seems to survive and sweep away everything else. It was 29 years ago. 29. Anyway this short simple song seems like a masterpiece to me.
This song, with a normal drummer (Copeland is like an ET, i don't know any human who can drum as him), is really simple and, in some point, even a little boring and repetitive.
There's no comparison between this song and YYZ, a true showcase of complexity, speed of execution, creativity, good taste and harmonic changes.
I love and respect both bands equally, but I honestly don't understand how could the jury for the Grammy Awards choose "Behind My Camel" as best instrumental song.
I've no idea why people are comparing this song to YYZ from Rush, they're two completely different pieces of GREAT music!
I personally prefer this one because the songwriting is far better and the melodies make far more sense, whereas YYZ sounds like a bunch of scales put together by a showoff drummer, although I do love the keyboard part in the end, my favorite part in YYZ.
Both bands are great musicians, though, and I would not compare their songs.
@vampiroangelico the reason they are being compared is because yyz lost the grammy to this song for "best instrumental" I personally disagree with you I think yyz is a far superior song played by superior musicians. I would never choose to listen to this song again, however anytime I hear yyz, I "RUSH" to crank the volume
@BluesShredGuru The fact that you "Rush" to crank the volume demonstrates that you like harder songs, and I respect that if it's your taste, but it does not make Rush the better musicians, it's like comparing apples to oranges. I love both bands, as I have all their CDs. Having been a musically educated musician myself for 30 years, I can guarantee you both trios are excellent musicians, but like very different music and arrangements. Rush would tell you the same, if you asked them. :-)
@vampiroangelico ok ok, I like the Police as well. I just don't like "Behind My Camel" one bit. It doesn't have much to do with how "hard" it is, I just don't like it very much. I very much like the song yyz. I am not sure why. I am also a musician. My band has a wide variety of music from the simplest of blues, to progressive metal. We have even done jazz sets for a few parties. I am only 15 years old, but I have written songs and I think yyz is a better composition. yyz should have won
I think the fact that you're 15 probably influenced the fact that you cannot appreciate more repetitive slower songs like "behind my camel", for example....
No big deal....I bet in about 10 or 15 years you will learn how to appreciate very different things in music, that you do not see now....when I was your age, I was learning how to play music from Pink Floyd, Queen, Genesis, Yes, Toto, Journey, Kiss, James Taylor,. I always loved variety!
@vampiroangelico If that was your variety, you aint seen nothin yet. I respect your opinion too. I would vote yyz, You would vote behind my camel. Good for you. I also play raggae, funk, rock, swing. I like slow repetitive songs, just not this one. I feel like you are trying to say that I don't know about anything other than speed metal because I am a young musician. We obviously like similar music, we just have a different opinion.
@BluesShredGuru NO I did not say that those bands is my variety now. It's just what I preferred back then, although I always listened to a lot of jazz fusion as well.
Nowadays I listen to and play just about every music genre, as I believe there is good and bad in all of them.
@vampiroangelico look up Wikipedia for both songs -- the incomparable YYZ lost the instrumental grammy to this barely-average song.
History has now proven that YYZ is epic and enduring, people enjoy doing covers and fan animations etc... while with the Camel Dump song (whatever it's called) even the guys from The Police wish it would just go away.
The ONLY way this could beat YYZ is if the judges were all on shrooms when they heard it. Because you have to admit that would make this song pretty intense.
"I hated that song so much that, one day when I was in the studio, I found the tape lying on the table. So I took it around the back of the studio and actually buried it in the garden."
—Sting
Im pretty sure that just about sums it up................
I don't hate Police for winning the award for this Camel's behind shit. I mean they didn't ask for it. I bet they were shocked too. YYZ is without a doubt far better but obviously the committee for the Grammy would beg to differ. The comments here and the reaction of audiences to both songs is a sufficient evidence to the fact that YYZ leads the race as far as the audiences are concerned. Rush is obviously not bothered by what a small group of commercially motivated people in media think.
@LEOJATT at the time, great music was coming out of trios. deserved? time will tell that horse zenyatta 2010 not so. camel jockeys. all the other ones are complete bullshit. and the atmosphere is less than perfect. Ting ta ting ting ting
@TheBrilliantGeniuses ????? Read the comment again. By the way, no need to reply if you understand it. In case you find it a bit difficult to understand what was mentioned in the comment, I would be happy to decipher it for you.
@LEOJATT Your OPINION that YYZ is better is just that, an opinion. The Grammy committee was clearly voting based on the entire song, not just musicianship. Granted YYZ is still an amazing song (don't get me wrong, I love rush). It just doesn't convey the same amount of emotion that Behind My Camel does. Behind my camel is an ominous eerie song that leaves you anxious. While YYZ on the other hand sounds like 5 different songs thrown together. In the end it's all a matter of opinion anyway.
@LEOJATT Don't get me wrong, Rush is my favorite band by far. But you've got to give the Police credit where credit is due. Rush has always been overlooked, and I believe it makes them better. The Police did a great job with this song, and have always been more commercially viable. Look at it as an expansion of good music. Just because I love Rush doesn't mean I don't listen to other good music.
trios. Rush YYZ came in second or last. Where are they nowowowowoowwoowwowo Congrats on Tribeca today... i missed simon&garfunkle at jazzfest today just for this... Did the metalhead producers dumb it down to substitute "gilded" with the word "lighted"? Nonetheless.... saw the trailer to Beyond the Lighted stage... reality tv star from kiss reminded me of alex's tiki bar.

20 dislike? Probably fans of Justin Bieber
carribou92 1 year ago
@carribou92 the reason why this song has so many dislikes is because it beat Rush YYZ on the Grammy awards. And YYZ is a much better instrumental than this
randomstofil 1 year ago
sounds more like an interlude or something...

This is not a great track by any means, but it's really not that bad. There are tons of experimental/instrumental/electronic bands whose EVERY SONG is worse than this. It's at least kind of haunting; it's got a dark melody that'll probably stick in my head for a little longer.

ugh, thumbs me down if you were here because you found out Yyz lost a grammy to this.

i don't drum, and I;m not a great guitarist, but I could play this shit easy, and this beats the masterful musicianship of rush on YYZ, not trying to put down the police or anything, but seriously, this song blows

My 2c.
weirdunclebob 1 year ago
@weirdunclebob YYZ is actually a very good way to express how they feel when returning home. The intro is in morse code and it spells YYZ because that is the toronto airport code. I think YYZ is just much more dynamic and it's a feel good song that sums up all their travels and expresses their happiness for returning home.
Behind my camel is a good song, but nothing happens.

Probably some members of that Jury are dead now. It seems that some people who argue here were quite far from being alive when that decision happened. A sense of injustice seems to survive and sweep away everything else. It was 29 years ago. 29. Anyway this short simple song seems like a masterpiece to me.

a load of balls in comparison with YYZ!!!!
Xanaseb 1 year ago
This song, with a normal drummer (Copeland is like an ET, i don't know any human who can drum as him), is really simple and, in some point, even a little boring and repetitive.
There's no comparison between this song and YYZ, a true showcase of complexity, speed of execution, creativity, good taste and harmonic changes.
I love and respect both bands equally, but I honestly don't understand how could the jury for the Grammy Awards choose "Behind My Camel" as best instrumental song.
davidalejandro90 1 year ago 2
@davidalejandro90 this shocking mis-awarding is on the same level of wrongness as Jack Palance mis-reading Marisa Tomei's name.

takidigits13 1 year ago 2
Who cares about YYZ. I love Rush but how many fucking years are you assholes going to bitch about that.
takidigits13 1 year ago
I've no idea why people are comparing this song to YYZ from Rush, they're two completely different pieces of GREAT music!
I personally prefer this one because the songwriting is far better and the melodies make far more sense, whereas YYZ sounds like a bunch of scales put together by a showoff drummer, although I do love the keyboard part in the end, my favorite part in YYZ.
Both bands are great musicians, though, and I would not compare their songs.
vampiroangelico 1 year ago
@vampiroangelico the reason they are being compared is because yyz lost the grammy to this song for "best instrumental" I personally disagree with you I think yyz is a far superior song played by superior musicians. I would never choose to listen to this song again, however anytime I hear yyz, I "RUSH" to crank the volume
BluesShredGuru 1 year ago
@BluesShredGuru The fact that you "Rush" to crank the volume demonstrates that you like harder songs, and I respect that if it's your taste, but it does not make Rush the better musicians, it's like comparing apples to oranges. I love both bands, as I have all their CDs. Having been a musically educated musician myself for 30 years, I can guarantee you both trios are excellent musicians, but like very different music and arrangements. Rush would tell you the same, if you asked them. :-)
vampiroangelico 1 year ago
@vampiroangelico ok ok, I like the Police as well. I just don't like "Behind My Camel" one bit. It doesn't have much to do with how "hard" it is, I just don't like it very much. I very much like the song yyz. I am not sure why. I am also a musician. My band has a wide variety of music from the simplest of blues, to progressive metal. We have even done jazz sets for a few parties. I am only 15 years old, but I have written songs and I think yyz is a better composition. yyz should have won
BluesShredGuru 1 year ago
@BluesShredGuru And I respect your opinion.
I always loved variety!
;-)
vampiroangelico 1 year ago
@vampiroangelico If that was your variety, you aint seen nothin yet. I respect your opinion too. I would vote yyz, You would vote behind my camel. Good for you. I also play raggae, funk, rock, swing. I like slow repetitive songs, just not this one. I feel like you are trying to say that I don't know about anything other than speed metal because I am a young musician. We obviously like similar music, we just have a different opinion.
BluesShredGuru 1 year ago
@BluesShredGuru NO I did not say that those bands is my variety now. It's just what I preferred back then, although I always listened to a lot of jazz fusion as well.
Nowadays I listen to and play just about every music genre, as I believe there is good and bad in all of them.
vampiroangelico 1 year ago
@vampiroangelico cool
BluesShredGuru 1 year ago
@vampiroangelico look up Wikipedia for both songs -- the incomparable YYZ lost the instrumental grammy to this barely-average song.
History has now proven that YYZ is epic and enduring, people enjoy doing covers and fan animations etc... while with the Camel Dump song (whatever it's called) even the guys from The Police wish it would just go away.
simonjeste 1 year ago
For some reason I find it quite good now, not the best.
unbelivableLP 1 year ago
The ONLY way this could beat YYZ is if the judges were all on shrooms when they heard it. Because you have to admit that would make this song pretty intense.

I really love The Police, but i gotta be honest - this has always been one of the very few songs i was skipping the moment it started.
clint667 1 year ago
I don't hate Police for winning the award for this Camel's behind shit. I mean they didn't ask for it. I bet they were shocked too. YYZ is without a doubt far better but obviously the committee for the Grammy would beg to differ. The comments here and the reaction of audiences to both songs is a sufficient evidence to the fact that YYZ leads the race as far as the audiences are concerned. Rush is obviously not bothered by what a small group of commercially motivated people in media think.

LEOJATT 1 year ago
@LEOJATT Your OPINION that YYZ is better is just that, an opinion. The Grammy committee was clearly voting based on the entire song, not just musicianship. Granted YYZ is still an amazing song (don't get me wrong, I love rush). It just doesn't convey the same amount of emotion that Behind My Camel does. Behind my camel is an ominous eerie song that leaves you anxious. While YYZ on the other hand sounds like 5 different songs thrown together. In the end it's all a matter of opinion anyway.
StupidGoodProduction 1 year ago
@LEOJATT Both bands are super. I love The Police more but YYZ should've won. That song is badass :P
StarSeeker94 1 year ago
@LEOJATT Don't get me wrong, Rush is my favorite band by far. But you've got to give the Police credit where credit is due. Rush has always been overlooked, and I believe it makes them better. The Police did a great job with this song, and have always been more commercially viable. Look at it as an expansion of good music. Just because I love Rush doesn't mean I don't listen to other good music.

trios. Rush YYZ came in second or last. Where are they nowowowowoowwoowwowo Congrats on Tribeca today... i missed simon&garfunkle at jazzfest today just for this...
