They systematically destroyed any village and killed all people - including babies for "humanitarian reasons" because they could not leave them alone among the death families. This was the result of a US anti-Vietnam war verteran conference I saw in a 16mm film where blood young veterans under tears tried to explain how military leaders (against official rules) psychologically tricked the young newcomers to be prepared for such killings.

Also (don't think of this as an excuse) those soldiers at the time did not consider the Vietnamese people to be people and thus didn't treat them as such. @awc321 cont, didn't carry it out, most of the ones who did, did so while suffering and once they'd killed once, their minds shut down and their bodies continued commiting these atrocoties. A lot killed some people because they had been threatened if they wouldn't do so. They killed these people while crying. All of the people who did carry out this horrific crime have now either commited suicide or are still suffering to an extreme extent after what they have done.

The kids they killed posed not threat to them. They did to vent their hatred. Hersh described a scene where after the rampage, the soldiers were eating besides a ditch and a kid managed to survive and crawl out of the ditch. In cold blood, Calley shot him. To silence him, maybe.
