For those interested in reading peer-reviewed information about the amendment, and about reading the full text, please see my Channel Page for a link to a website which contains a reference page. See references 00001 and 00002.
I have to post links in this way because YouTube won't allow URLs to be posted in comments.
No on Amendment 4 is most likely a lobbying group. The BAD kind.
Until Developer funding is eliminated from local officials campaign coffers...Until Elected Legislators are 'NOT' 'in' the business or 'connected' to the business of Development...Until local Commissions quit bendin-over-backwards to accomodate Developer/Land Owners allowing 6-8 hr presentations, postponements, continuations and hearings timed when most citizens cannot attend...Until equality is allowed Citizens to have a seat at the table...AMENDMENT 4 'IS' THE ONLY SOLUTION!
Greg, I tried to put a link to my column in my comments but the system wouldn't let me. One of the items I noted was that none of the crooked politicians listed by Hometown Democracy committed crimes associated with comprehensive plans. And Jill I make no apologies for supporting the property rights of all citizens, including yours. Property rights and the preservation of agriculture are not mutually exclusive goals and are, in many cases, complementary goals.
I'm voting YES on 4! No wonder the NYTimes (12/14/08) finds Florida #1 in political corruption. My own commissioner is now sitting in jail. Developers choose the people they'll put up, create their big campaign funding, vote them in. . . then comes pay-back time. It takes us 4 years to kick the bums out, and by then the damage is done. Then we get another raft of developer-controlled candidates, and on it goes. Only Amendment 4 will break this shameful chain and stop the gravy train!
A4 opposition comes from local politicians, chambers of commerce, and all the other sucker fish connected to developers & construction industry groups who don't like voters finally having a say on building projects which impact people's homes and neighborhoods. Too bad. VOTE YES ON FLORIDA HOMETOWN DEMOCRACY - AMENDMENT 4!!!
I addressed this outrageously faulty logic in a column I wrote in July issue of FloridAgriculture magazine. The lead was, "DOES ANYONE ELSE see red flags going up when one of the major arguments used by a group pushing the approval of a constitutional amendment (Amendment 4) is that Florida’s elected officials are corrupt?"
@theedcarol2 Of course you would object if you work for FloridAgriculture magazine.. you got the little warning in your paycheck to bewatre of amendment 4, I supopse.
The Florida Farm Bureau cares more about preserving the development rights of farmers in this state than it does preserving agriculture.
@theedcarol2 Wow, you must be quite disconnected from the motivations for doing this in order to make a comment like that. I support it to stop the dillution of my home value, the paving over of our Aquifers, to slow and the stop the pollution of our surface waters, ti hang on to what is left of our natural environment. The fact that it changes the system such that it makes corruption less profitable is icing on the cake. It is a warranty on your quality of life backed by your neighbors!!.
Only changes to the Comprehensive Growth Plan, or re-zoning, like from agricultural ( 1 unit per twenty acres ) to high density residential ( 20 units per acre ) would be put on the ballot for the Citizens to DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES if they want to completely destroy their quality of life in their own town or county.
This is a ridiculous amendment. 1. We will be voting on a ton of changes- and it is going to be very difficult for people to do. Ballots will be humongous. 2. People vote for these so-called corrupt politicians. What is going to change? They will still vote for them and in addition vote for crazy changes to our zoning. People do not generally have any idea about zoning and development laws and issues. Do you really want to see 100 page ballots each quarter of the year?
SO we take the power from crooked politicians and put in the hands of lawyers? Come on, there has to be a better way!

I want it like how it was in the REAL Roman Democracy, where EVERYONE has to vote.
EVERY PERSON in the very early days of Rome put their name in a container, and THAT'S how people got elected.
