@rogmam203 The broom trips the kill switch on top of the car. You shut the car down after the run is clocked to stop unnecessary wear and tear. The engine break easily as they run at very high rpm
These things amaze me. How do they work? I know they're essentially an engine on wheels, but does the momentum force on the cable open the throttle or something?
@bankslord The throttle is set to wide open, the cable and centrifugal force keeps the car on the track. Since it's WOT and one gear, The car needs to be pushed off (horsed) and then several revolutions around the track are required before the motor gets up to an efficient rpm. Pretty cool when you hear it rip live at the track.
@GoRacingWantagh So its just the natural acceleration of the engine? Immense. I guess the cable is just stretching over due to the force too? If one of those cables snapped i guess they'd be some damage! Great stuff. What CC are the engines?
@bankslord The engines are 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 5 and 10 cc. There is a lot of info on the web now about tether car racing. Google "tether car wiki" and that will give you a great start. There are links that will give you updated world wide records of the various classes.
there should be a Tether track in every second town for all the boys/girls to get involved in cars, racing, construction, and lots of laughs and fun and general bonding like we use to, not to mention the fresh air,a great past time that has been arround for 100 years and is still with us today, thank god the big big greedy Corp,s did not kill everything off, long live tether cars old and new !!!!!!
This is craftmanship at its best. And I love the vintage tether cars, the rods and stuff. Of course the superfast nitros are awesome too! LOL @ the broom, for those who didn't know, this is for switching the engine off not for sweeping the track ;)
@michaelsmclennan - this was in Kalinga Park, in Brisbane's northern suburbs. Sadly, the track has been removed for construction of the Airport Link Tunnel. The only other one I know of in Oz is at Luddenham, west of Sydney.
Tether car racing, control line planes, rubber-powered duration planes, etc. are really lost arts in the world of model vehicles. It's nice to see that it still persists in some places!
Awesome video, but what's the guy with the broom for? Is there an off switch on the top of the car to decellerate it when the speedgoal is accomplished / scheduled time is over or something?
How does this process work to keep the car on the pavement when it's going slower, and also when it's going very fast? Is it on a literal steel track that it is riding on top of?
Its tethered to a pole in the center of the track using a cable that is allowed to pivot around said pole. I believe that a person is in the center as well, so that he/she can pull on the cable to get the car rolling, getting out of the way when the car is capable of picking up speed on its own.
either it moves a mile per hour or it dosent lol. if you were going to compare the ground it covered to the scale of the car for example..if it was a 1/10 car and you "called"the area it was covering scale, it would be moving 3000 mph is that what your trying to say ..problem is, its actual area its covering..(its not as if it were a train set with scale buildings scenery etc...)oh ya look at it its going 300 mph
I've never seen tires go on fire, but I have seen them disintegrate. There are also lots of tire marks on the track, but you don't see them in the video.
that's what the tether line is for. The cars are also designed aerodynamically so there is down force which keeps the tires in contact with the track at high speeds. On occasion the tires will disintegrate, that is why the track is surrounded with a safety fence.
What's with the broom?..Why not just let the car run out of gas and stop?

Where is this exactly in Brisbane?
How many people do this?
Has this track been there for like 50 years or something recent.
Just curios as I never knew something like this existed in Aus?
Has anybody tried to do this with electric, is electric faster with tethered cars?

Stinkeyfeet678 2 years ago
@Stinkeyfeet678 no, as 200 MPH converts to approximately 320km/h, 300km/h would be closer to 187-188 MPH.
