  • What's with the broom?..Why not just let the car run out of gas and stop?

  • @rogmam203 The broom trips the kill switch on top of the car. You shut the car down after the run is clocked to stop unnecessary wear and tear. The engine break easily as they run at very high rpm

  • These things amaze me. How do they work? I know they're essentially an engine on wheels, but does the momentum force on the cable open the throttle or something?

  • @bankslord The throttle is set to wide open, the cable and centrifugal force keeps the car on the track. Since it's WOT and one gear, The car needs to be pushed off (horsed) and then several revolutions around the track are required before the motor gets up to an efficient rpm. Pretty cool when you hear it rip live at the track.

  • @GoRacingWantagh So its just the natural acceleration of the engine? Immense. I guess the cable is just stretching over due to the force too? If one of those cables snapped i guess they'd be some damage! Great stuff. What CC are the engines?

  • @bankslord The engines are 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 5 and 10 cc. There is a lot of info on the web now about tether car racing. Google "tether car wiki" and that will give you a great start. There are links that will give you updated world wide records of the various classes.

  • there should be a Tether track in every second town for all the boys/girls to get involved in cars, racing, construction, and lots of laughs and fun and general bonding like we use to, not to mention the fresh air,a great past time that has been arround for 100 years and is still with us today, thank god the big big greedy Corp,s did not kill everything off, long live tether cars old and new !!!!!!

  • All you have to do is fast-forward the video.

  • wow

  • I wonder what the G-force on that thing is :0

  • This is craftmanship at its best. And I love the vintage tether cars, the rods and stuff. Of course the superfast nitros are awesome too! LOL @ the broom, for those who didn't know, this is for switching the engine off not for sweeping the track ;)

  • at 1:00 it sounds like the car is shouting urwin

  • Where is this exactly in Brisbane?

    How many people do this?

Has this track been there for like 50 years or something recent.

Just curios as I never knew something like this existed in Aus?

Has anybody tried to do this with electric, is electric faster with tethered cars?

  • @michaelsmclennan - this was in Kalinga Park, in Brisbane's northern suburbs. Sadly, the track has been removed for construction of the Airport Link Tunnel. The only other one I know of in Oz is at Luddenham, west of Sydney.

  • GoRacingWantagh...mph or Km/h?

  • probably km/h. its just a guess because it goes to like 280

  • Imagine what would happen if a wombat walked in front of it, then...

  • imagine what would happen if a squirrel walked in front of that

  • No squirrels in Australia :)

  • @nealshireman - possum, maybe. We don't have squirrels in Brisbane.

  • @JBofBrisbane ok, you're lucky then ;) SQUIRRELS ARE SO ANNOYING!

  • Tether car racing, control line planes, rubber-powered duration planes, etc. are really lost arts in the world of model vehicles. It's nice to see that it still persists in some places!

  • thats km/h not mph

  • how do you know that?

  • Track Movie Brisbane Australia...

  • 300 mph`? o.0 DAMN!!

  • 300 kmh is like 225 mph

  • @Stinkeyfeet678 no, as 200 MPH converts to approximately 320km/h, 300km/h would be closer to 187-188 MPH.

  • how do these car work?

  • It's measure in kph - it converts to about 190 mph.

  • one of these things killed my mate's gran but i reckon if your time is up then it is up

  • put some mini camera on it. :P

  • oh.. thats the track near toombul station... sick car.

  • play jump rope with that!

  • I've wondered for yeas what the hell that was for when passing Toombul station

  • Awesome video, but what's the guy with the broom for? Is there an off switch on the top of the car to decellerate it when the speedgoal is accomplished / scheduled time is over or something?

  • yes, the broom hits a switch that kills the car.

  • Comment removed

  • omg i didn't know i lived so close to these things, im going :D

  • holy crap that fast that will kill you mate over 300km

  • How does this process work to keep the car on the pavement when it's going slower, and also when it's going very fast? Is it on a literal steel track that it is riding on top of?

  • Its tethered to a pole in the center of the track using a cable that is allowed to pivot around said pole. I believe that a person is in the center as well, so that he/she can pull on the cable to get the car rolling, getting out of the way when the car is capable of picking up speed on its own.

  • yeah thats right

but what if that cord snapped

    that would suck lol

  • That wouldn't suck. That would probably be lethal! Fortunately, the cord they use is likely very strong and inspected frequently. At least, I hope...

  • that's extremely fast, but that sound is extremely annoying!

  • thats nuts

  • 300 scale mph!!!!

  • scale mph? what the hell is that lol

  • it too complicated for me to explan, look it up on google

  • either it moves a mile per hour or it dosent lol. if you were going to compare the ground it covered to the scale of the car for example..if it was a 1/10 car and you "called"the area it was covering scale, it would be moving 3000 mph is that what your trying to say ..problem is, its actual area its covering..(its not as if it were a train set with scale buildings scenery etc...)oh ya look at it its going 300 mph

  • LOL. What the hell are you smoking (and can i have some?) lol

  • 300kph it's in AUSTRALIA BABY!!!

  • @theroastedpotatoman - no, 300 REAL kilometres per hour.

  • about 180 mph?

  • whats going on?

  • tether car racing, Rc car racing from before when RC cars were invented.

  • so what is powering it?

  • Nitro powered engine mounted in the car.

  • imagin putting your foot infront of that

  • holy crap!!!

    300kph!!

    whats that in mph?

  • About 200MPH

  • i almost shure that thats mph

  • its Australian, we roll with KPH!!

  • beautiful! i wish i had one! Blazer do you want to volunteer your nut sack for the 300 mph bash?

  • imagine crowtching down like you would normaly take a crap drop you pants and let it hit your nutsack at 300mph

  • y do this????

  • holy shit

  • wouldn't the friction from the wheels make a fire or at least skid marks on da ground?

  • I've never seen tires go on fire, but I have seen them disintegrate. There are also lots of tire marks on the track, but you don't see them in the video.

  • ya i think the shade is blocking the view from the skid/tires marks

  • I'm from the US how would I find a place here that I could see some thing like that

  • Unfortunately there are only 3 tracks in the USA. New York, Indiana, and So Cal. If you go to AMRCA dot com, you can get a schedule of events.

  • Thank you for that info

  • Someone should play jump rope with line holding the car!! LOL.

  • hahaha ya

  • so do thoes cars use nitro engines

  • engines are fueled with nitro or methanol

  • Ah HA! I've passed by this place, on the train, every morning/afternoon for the last two years. I've always wondered what it was for.

  • hey if it would only go 780 m/h then its going faster than sound! lol good luck

  • do they really go 300 mph?

  • The world record for tether cars is 210 mph, which is 338 km/h, maybe that's the confusion.

  • ohhh thast right km is used in australia lol i forgot about that

  • nar didnt make it i had to work at truck show hope get the next one though

  • Well this gives me an idea of what this thing is used for down the end of the street.

  • yeah theres a event on this weekand i shall be going

  • nvcheeko, I'm curious, did you ever make it to the track? What did you think?

  • Where in Brisbane Do they do that i want to go

  • Kalinga Park adjacent to the railway line. Go to the website trcaa dot org, or google australian tether car racing.

  • how do those things not fly away?!?

  • that's what the tether line is for. The cars are also designed aerodynamically so there is down force which keeps the tires in contact with the track at high speeds. On occasion the tires will disintegrate, that is why the track is surrounded with a safety fence.
