There is only one though in the workers mind: Do not sneeze, otherwise the lens is fucked! , I though they would have mask on to block spit to become stain inside the camera.
"As the lenses are directly incorporated deep into the front barrel, a high degree of technical skill is required." "Before each technician can assemble one of these lenses, they must give a urine sample to prove absence of caffiene within 24 hours prior to beginning work, lest their shaking hands drop any parts."
wouldnt it be cool if there was a little signiture on the lens, by the person that made it, kind of like when they used to build cars, would make the lens unique and feel more special :D
Wow, great, it's nice to know what effort they put in.I watched a documentary about LCDs, making cookies requires more skill. With most electronics you get robbed, this is why price doesen't drop on lenses.
AT 3:25 the worker puts the lens with his hands, without any king of rubber protection for fingers as some workers seen before on the moovie....qhat a nice "High quality lens"
This is not a lens the worker puts at 3:25 but a rubber safety ring which helps connect a lens with the next one. I own the 500mm f/4 and can surely "testify" that it is an optic masterpiece! Regards from Greece.
Employees in the Japanese manufcaturing sector are typically paid more than US employees in that sector. So based on wages alone a $6k lens made in Japan would be $4.161k if made in the US. Of course wages are not the only factor, there are raw materials, etc. However, it is probably fair to say that if Canon made its lenses in the USA that they could be produced for less cost. I hear that Canon have been looking at outsourcing recently so maybe lower prices could be on the cards.
if Samyang sells wonderfull 85mm f1.4 for 200euro and is better optically than the expensive Canons and on pair with the Nikons same range which is 8 times more expensive, i dont see why it can not be made for under 500eur. you guys what? are you defending the bastards that want to make 5000 a month? the Chinese and Koreans would punish them soon, just give them a little more time, hopefully sooner
Beyond the overly simplistic view of just "materials and labor", keep in mind there's a huge amount of R&D costs that also need to be factored into any product cost. If anyone seriously believes it's that easy . . . I say go build me one and I'll buy at your cheaper price!
The glass that goes into a lens like that is VERY expensive. Much of it is rejected well before it gets to be polished. The remaining machining and mounting isn't cheap either. Then the quality control must be perfect. This all takes considerable skill and top of the line materials. There is NO WAY a lens like this could be manufactured for $200 in materials or labor. Then you need to pay for R&D and make a profit to boot since they only make a few hundred of these a year.
Gasitman, you have no idea what you're talking about. The milling machines, lens grinders, technicians to grind the lens, metallurgist, opticians, not to mention CAD designers and all the technicians to go with each respective team (most of which require at least a 4 year college degree) are just some of the components you don't see on this video. $200 won't even get you the air filters used in the HVAC systems in the production facility.
if i like this video and share it with 1000+ people, will you send me one of these lens pleaseeeeeeeeee?
