Proud Roman Catholic, love this song. I wonder what direction XTC would've gone in if they would've let Barry have free reign to do msic like this....
@Rockin2Infinity1 It's not that hard actually, you can always add line "That's a nice parthenogenesis" to your lyrics. And it even rhymes with 'morphogenesis'!
I'm just wondering if the mask was the same one used in the Nemesis photo-stories (and if Tony Luke has any connection to Shriekback we'd have our answer).
This video was, of course, made during Nemesis' 'drunk and badly coordinated' phase. Fortunately, Purity Brown helped him through and as a reward, he mind wiped her again and continued manipulating her without mercy. CREDO!!!

The only song I have on record to feature the word 'Parthenogenesis'. And why not? A masterpiece of wordplay from the one time 'Unacceptable Face Of XTC', Barry Andrews. Love it!
@AkizMe If this band is new to you, can I suggest that a good starting off point for them is the 1990 Island Records compilation 'Shriekback - The Dancing Years' - it's a great overview of their earlier material, such as 'My Spine [Is The Bassline], 'Everything That Rises [Must Converge], and the long 'Arch Deviant' mix of 'Nemesis'. You can probably get it quite cheaply off this here internet. Trust me, it'll be a good buy. Goodbye. :D
Barry Andrews looks like such an evil true believer - like he'd let in every one of Cthulhu's spawn if he could. They should have made a Lovecraft film around him.

So much could be said what this is, represents or just what one decides it alludes to...I always thought (yah even back inte day as a teen) of Western/American govt. m odern stuff...well....more now I know...ah, yes, feel applicable in a bigger way..
Lead track from the excellent Oil and Gold album. Hope they made some money from Michael Mann using them on the "Manhunter" soundtrack. The packaging of their 12" singles was superb too: worth tracking down.
I was a kid at the back of our family car and we were singing this song and my Dad stopped the car and threatened to throw us out! LOL...He was a Christian...we didnt know what we were singing....I still laugh about that
Has always been one of my favorite songs not sure why.....think i like the fact that they use tinkerbell and jack the ripper in the same line....LOL the tune is catchy also. I remember people going crazy dancing to this song also back in the 90's at Club Hells Communion night in providence....
I figured that the song was about the oil business, what with all its references to dead and prehistoric animals and evil and like that. Isn't it also titled "Oil and Gold"? I always loved Judge Dredd, but somehow the Nemesis the Warlock character from 2000 A.D. escaped me...Still, I remember Man-Ray in Boston playing this song every damn night in the '90s and people always going crazy for it! Never saw such a fascination with this tune as I did there.
It IS refferencing "Nemisis the Warlock", check the strange character at beginning of the video...and then check 2000AD's "Nemesis the Warlock" character
@silverbladeTE No.....it's not. The song's got nothing to do with that character and the image you're referring to looks nothing like that character. Pause at 0:09 and you will see that the mask is a stylized horse head.
um, you do know who Nemesis is? You do know the band were acknowledged fans? you do know they SAID it was Nemesis in the video, do you? Please go check such, ok, before posting :)

@entropy156 Sorry to disagree, but that IS Nemesis The Warlock. Lets see... Horns? Yup. Red eyes? Yup. Vertical 'mouth'? Yup. Cruciform blades at the end of his snout? Indeed. Spiked external spine? Yup. Just as envisaged by Pat Mills & Kevin O' Neill, way back in 1980, although he did not appear 'in the flesh' for a couple of stories. He's my favourite 2000 AD character, so I know I'm not wrong here. CREDO! [or if you support the bad guys] BE PURE! BE VIGILANT! BEHAVE! :D
@harrisroyal No, he has just got cloven hooves on goat-like legs - ie. the knees bend 'backwards'. He's based on classical depictions of the Devil, or mediaeval Daemons. I always loved the character - he's such a badass guy! You never can tell if he's good or bad. His enemy Torquemada, however, is just a total evil bastard. And therefore, a character you never forget. Get the 2000 AD collected Nemesis graphic novels - you won't regret it - the stories and art are simply astonishing. :D
@brianartillery I hate to say it, but I had the originals. Gave them away to a collector trying to fill his back catalog. Mind you, just as well, my house flooded the next year, would have lost the lot. Did you get with DR and Quinch? .
@interceptor2795 He's not really supposed to look goth. Some people can actually avoid giving in to stereotype even when everyone insists on such limitations.
Barry Andrews looks like such an evil true believer - like he'd let in every one of Cthulhu's spawn if he could. They should have made a Lovecraft film around him.
with this song and accompanying video, Shriekback has perfectly illustrated how to take a great song and bring it to transcendent levels through the use of video. The song is strong enough on it's own to rank in the top 100 of all 80s "wave" tracks, but this video pushed it completely over the top! I still get as excited about this song and video as the day I first time I heard/saw it. Bravo!
I could not agree with you more. I saw them open (!) for Simple Minds at the Paramount Theater in Seattle in '85, and they blew us out of the place. Truly, truly one of the best live shows I have ever witnessed. Needless to say, not that I hate SM in any way, really, but they could not have hoped to come close to following Shriekback...
@krasblak You would have absolutely loved that show! In spite of the fact that I lost a pair of $300 Steiner binoculars (can't even tell you why I had them there -- The Paramount in Seattle only seats around 2,800...), it was one of the most amazing spectacles I have ever witnessed before or since. I was only 20 years old then and not an anti-fan of Simple Minds, but Shriekback was just so large and dark and surreal. As much flak as "die hard" fans give Barry Andrews, he was extraordinary! Huge!
When the video first came out I saw an interview on MTV (this is when MTV still played good music) - the band said that the song and video is about European paganism, a period which today we call Halloween. In the old days people believed that the spirits of the dead walked the earth on that day, so the people did all kinds of things to frighten the malicious spirits away.
@nightshadeah Nice post....must have been 12o minutes......were all Pagans at Easter and Christmas as well not just Halloween.....not just Europe.... Samhain does make sense though...thanks for your vision and comment. Makes perfect the line "we all know evil is an exact science"
Think like nemesis another genesis no one move a muscle as the dead come home....its exploration of faith and science......one in the same....notice the golden spiral....exists everywhere....in flowers.....fruit......snails......agnostic to the end......stand and be broken truth is unspoken dont be another drone as we all go home(<>..<>)
Me and a girl I used to date, used to go and go to the front of the line and they'd open as we walked up,needless to say you've got to 'out there' wardrobe-wise,etc.
She ended up being there the night of the BIG raid;I was 100 mi. away.
Those were VERY good times, especially "the Cold Bar".
and for anyone who's wondering: parthenogenesis [Gr.,=virgin birth], in biology, a form of reproduction in which the ovum develops into a new individual without fertilization.
I have said this a million times! Too much Barry in the soup! But then again, my bullyish childish will trashed most of the goodness out of my life as well! An otherwise REMARKABLE "band".
that is funny - I saw them in 1983 as well - I never recovered from my intersection with Shriekdback. At that time they were sharing the breakthroughs they created out of doing *"the est training" in interviews they were giving - inspired by their shares I did it as well around the same time and hundreds of people followed after that. Shriekback was a truly transformational moment on earth.
My life AFTER the Landmark Forum was the trip that really blew me away though. I have spoken to Dave Alen and Barry Andrews and thanked them for sharing this life altering experience with me :-)
@tommybass40 I hear you on that one partner.I'm sure our good friend Malibu Sue(now at 94.3 in Farmingdale)misses playing those New Wave classics like this one.Maybe if we request it enough over at 94.3,they'll bring back those good old days. What do you say?You game?
Yea, I'm game. I listen to a lot of new rock that I think would fit perfectly into the WLIR/WDRE playlist along with all the classic New Wave bands. We should start our own new station!
I love comics but seem to have missed this late eighties indepenedent title. But this song remains such an awesome indictment on human culture that I'm still amazed that it is not more popular for the fact that it just ROCKS!
OK, cool. And sorry for my ignorance. You guys seem shocked that someone would not know what the song is about. I freely admit. I know nothing about the band or song but I am fascinated by the song, so I'd love to hear more about the meaning of it. It's sort of dated now but the imagery is really interesting.
I've been a huge fan of this band for over 20 years, and I have no idea what this song is about. Indeed, I have no idea what any of Shriekback's songs are about, but I also don't care. I just like the way Andrews' lyrics blend in with the music.
SICK of these political adds. I come here to get away from that crap, and now they have put them on my playlist songs. Damn Them!

This song is awesome, I remember dancing to this all gothed-out, years before the term "goth" even existed.
Good times! That was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back, back in the Starck club days.

and for anyone who's wondering: parthenogenesis [Gr.,=virgin birth], in biology, a form of reproduction in which the ovum develops into a new individual without fertilization.

this is one of my FAVORITE songs from the 80's...it's fantastic!

The '80's: heyday of matching good songs with overdone nonsensical music videos and bad haircuts.

I have said this a million times! Too much Barry in the soup! But then again, my bullyish childish will trashed most of the goodness out of my life as well! An otherwise REMARKABLE "band".

i had the pleasure of seeing them in 1984 - one of the best shows i have seen by anyone......
livegoodwin 1 year ago
@livegoodwin
that is funny - I saw them in 1983 as well - I never recovered from my intersection with Shriekdback. At that time they were sharing the breakthroughs they created out of doing *"the est training" in interviews they were giving - inspired by their shares I did it as well around the same time and hundreds of people followed after that. Shriekback was a truly transformational moment on earth.
* It is now called The Landmark Forum.

@tworedlines I spent 2 days at a Landmark Forum, what a trip.

@virtualmatter2010
Yup it was a trip alright.
My life AFTER the Landmark Forum was the trip that really blew me away though. I have spoken to Dave Alen and Barry Andrews and thanked them for sharing this life altering experience with me :-)

I remember when WLIR, 92.7FM, Long Island used to play this back in the 80's along with all the other new wave/alternative bands.
The station is now Spanish music.
Live just sucks sometimes.
tommybass40 2 years ago
@tommybass40 I hear you on that one partner.I'm sure our good friend Malibu Sue(now at 94.3 in Farmingdale)misses playing those New Wave classics like this one.Maybe if we request it enough over at 94.3,they'll bring back those good old days. What do you say?You game?
AnthonysDen 2 years ago
Yea, Malibu Sue! "Screamer of the Week"!

I just like the way Andrews' lyrics blend in with the music.
quasarsphere 1 year ago
Are you kidding me? Human society is inherently destructive and self-destructive, so when you see it collapsing the voices of chaos shout with Glee!
LordNecron69 2 years ago
@LordNecron69
Human society thrives on survival of the kindest. It is the very nature of a "society". This is why we tend to our lame and do not devour our young.
EntinludeX 2 years ago
100% incorrect. We absolutely devour our young, visit southeast Washington, DC.
beowulven 2 years ago
Absolute certainty is for hyperbolic fools and charlatians. Nothing is 100%,
Unless you mean to suggest EVERYONE lives in Southeast DC, I don't see where you have a point.
EntinludeX 2 years ago
Everyone does live in Southeast DC, look around you.
beowulven 2 years ago
Then where do Australians live?
EntinludeX 2 years ago
Erm, Southeast DC? It's like Chinatown, a state of mind...
Note that the word is spelled "charlatans".
