You should be looking at the gulf states, at Northern African countries (Libya, Algeria, Egypt), at the violence and wars ongoing in Nigeria, Mauritania, Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti, look at women's rights in Pakistan - or the science there. Actually what Ayaan should say is "read the Qur'an." Sounds weird? It isn't - if you read the Qur'an you'll find over 100 verses calling for the enslavement and killing of non-Muslims and bondage and inferiority of women. There are many social problems inside Muslim societies just like European/Latin American/Asian societies, including food prices, overpopulation(no enough food to feed people),inequality, unemployed rate (it is a big problems among because unemployed youths are usually recruited by extremists/jihadists easily).

For me, there are a tons of issues but religion has overshadowed rest of the problems.
