I think right now a lot of people hear the term "hit" and they think" catchy", "pop", or "Whatever sound is in style". So when I say "Not just to make hits" I'm saying not to just copy and become repetitive and formulaic. There are plenty of ways to make a "hit" without being a facsimile. I think a skilled producer can emulate as well as be original. So yes musicians need to make hits to make it in the industry, but in the end the listeners decide what is a hit and the industry responds.
That was pretty redundant. It had nearly nothing to do with the changing role of the producer. If the roles are becoming blurred, as he briefly mentions, he should talk more about that.
Also, what kind of musicians is he working with that they are unable to play their own songs in a different key and tempo without the aid of technology?? You don't need technology to do that! A very basic (the most basic) understanding of music theory and a metronome would do fine.
