To all the Black people who have posted vitriolic retaliations to the nasty things that have been written by White folk here, remember Dr. Martin Luther King's words “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” To the White folks who think Black people are just monkeys who learned how to talk, may I ask you - would you have a conversation with a worm? Why engage in an argument with a member of a so called inferior species?
@113001596 Actually you people got kicked out of South Africa by Chaka and Dingane. You lost your land to your black "brothers" ... doos. Hey you know why God made people like you? So Bryce Lawrence wouldn't look so bad.
I wish the U.S. Military and the Iraqi Army had a unit like this in Iraq,Coalition forces would have inflicted 10 times the casualties on the enemy . I have talked to many former Insurgents in Iraq who have been threatened and itimidated by Al Quida operatives in Iraq .They wish to fight against these vermin . The U.S. has not studied the Rhodesian experience in combat than give in to the Liberal mind set . Liberalism is a mental illness !
Is it just me or does anyone else tire of seeing "possibly the best special forces unit in the world" tacked on to a description of every special forces unit in the world? For example, Navy Seals, SAS, Spetz Natz, etc. Let's just get them all in a room and play Twister to decide who is best once and for all, please
@6kram66 yes its silly they are all tier one operators the best there country has and in nato they cross train with each other any one of them are in the top 1% of armed men.
I wish the US had not played politics and sacrificed Rhodesia to not upset the brits. IF we had spent 1/4 of what we did in vietnam I believe rhodesia would have been ok
Selous scouts were definitely the best unit in the world, Russian spetznaz or US navy seals are very overrated. Selous Scouts and Recce regiment of the SA are far better in my opinion.
Selous scouts had a nice step in their training when they were sent to the jungle with a knife and a raw egg at night. Next morning the egg had to be cooked and ready to be eaten.
@FinnRocket Oh please! Don't compare the Selous with Seals or Spetznatz. They aren't in the same league. Selous did a great job on a shoe string budget for a tiny country, but they can't compare to the vast training and equipment of the US/Russians.
Selous were poor ski troopers, unable to perform submarine delivery, no good at arctic operations, incapable of long swims or underwater navigation and demolition and ship mining! Topper: they never found Mugabe or Nkomo!!!
@DeathWarmedUp1000 Clearly well-informed and intelligently thought through. That's sarcasm by the way. Thought I better explain that as I doubt very much whether you would get it otherwise.
@jameswb333333 bunch of fairies the lot! Selous Scouts got a dirty hiding from a rag tag rebel army that were equipped with little more than catapults.
Also before you go any further with the Mugabe propaganda to cover Britain's crimes, shame and guilt in Zimbabwe, you should read the research article that your own British media (the BBC) published. Its called "Zimbabwe land reform 'not a failure." You can find it through the search box on the BBC website.
@forevah Britain's propoganda didn't turn Rhodesia from one of the most successful economies in Africa into a bloody dust bowl. Mr Mugabe did. I really suggest you take off your blinkers and have a look at the facts.
@jameswb333333 Rhodesia (Cecil Rhodes + Area) is not Zimbabwe. You mean the "most successful economy" for the Europeans who invaded and occupied the country while majority of the real native Zimbabweans were working as labourers to the Europeans? Try removing you propaganda shades and see what your sanctions have done to his country. The average man cannot even get loans and transfer money in various Western countries plus Zim's credit line is blocked by Western countries.
@forevah It is not our 'sanctions' - it is your wonderful Mr Mugabe. I am afraid you really are deluded if you do not know that Mugabe murdered his opposition, forced Joshua Nkomo out, sent his 5th Brigade into Bulawayo to terrorize the opposition and then set about chaotically turning a resource rich country into a basket case. If Mr Mugabe is so confident of what a great job he has done, why doesn't he stop using the old colonial whipping boy and actually hold REAL elections.
I am not surprised that your Zimbabwe propaganda is very deep. Mugabe murdered his opposition?? Liar. You failed to take into account that ZAPU attacked first & killed a lot of Shona people. Yet, Joshua Nkomo came back to Zimbabwe after the civil war and formed an alliance with Mugabe's party to be come ZANU PF. Which murdered opposition does that? You forgot to include Apartheid SA's attacks on Zimbabwe to destabilize the country. Your land is in Britain, not in Africa. Thief.
@forevah Let's try and get a few facts straight here. If Britain had backed Ian Smith, Mugabe or Nkomo wouldn't have had a chance. So this 'thief' rubbish - Britain actually and disgracefully helped Mugabe into power, which is why Ian Smith had to declare UDI. This shameful agreement took place in Lancaster House, London in 1980 - this led to your power sharing democracy, with Mugabe and Nkomo. But Mugabe pushed Nkomo out and since then democracy has been a sick joke in Zimbabwe.
You are still talking out of your arrogant butt. Just like most of your British peers, you don't know jack about Zimbabwe other than to steal & claim an entire country. I will tell you again for the last time, ZANU (Mugabe's Party) & ZAPU (Nkomo's Party) formed an alliance after the civil war in the 80s which was caused by Apartheid SA's attacks on Zimbabwe to become ZANU PF. Landcaster was about returning land back to native Zimbabweans, idiot. Your land is in Britain, thief.
@forevah I love the abuse you resort to. 'Idiot' 'Thief' - I think that fact alone says everything about you. Anyway good luck in your economic paradise. Zimbabwe such a shining example of democracy, freeedom of speech and economic success. Well done Mr Mugabe. Enjoy.
Act all ignorant about British invasion and colonization of Zimbabwe. Colonization is another British word for land theft. Political correctness prevents the media from linking the two words so as not to arouse the European conscience. You are in the UK, what business do you have with land and people all the way in Southern Africa? Nothing. If not for Cecil Rhodes (Rhodes + Area = Rhodesia), you will never know of Zimbabwe.
@heaty007 Frankly because they believed a lot of the Chinese and Russian communist propoganda that the leaders of the 'revolution' propogated. I wonder how many Africans would have Ian Smith back now if they could. Except for those that are totally blinkered, Zimbabwe is a tragedy. I hope one day that the country gets the democracy and decent leaders that the people deserve, black or white.
@forevah What absolute nonsense man. Gukurahundi had nothing to do with South Africa or their Apartheid policies? How many Ndebele were massacred by Mugabes' 5th Brigade?? This was about a power struggle between ZAPU & ZANU you pretentious prick! I was there, I saw what happened, I know many countrymen who lost family members to Mugabe and his ZANU scum. Get your fact straight, you're a fucking disgrace. Reading your posts, it seems you are the one who knows jack about my country. Dambe.
You are just another British Ngochani who cannot tell the difference that his land is in Europe and not in Zimbabwe or any African country. Yes, I believe that rubbish propaganda you Europeans rant that Mugabe left his house to kill millions of Ndebele. Yet your Queen gave him Knighthood, lmao!! @forevah You've been watching too many American movies ... "you don't know jack"...is about Zimbabwean as Prince Charles. Besides, mealie-mouth, I know more about Zimbabwe and its' history & culture than you ever will. My guess is you're a shifty Shona, a slime ball ZANU PF maggot. The day is coming soon when we will evict your ass from our country. Watch and learn.
"shifty"??? And you are supposed to be an English man? LOL.
Yes, I am watching & learning how we are kicking your British asses off our ancestral lands.
A British thief wants to evict a Shona man from his Mashonaland? HA HA HA, lmao, lol. You will never be a Zimbabwean. You and your fore fathers are thieves and armed robbers. Your people could not survive in Europe, idiot. We have taken our land back from you and you can cry your nostalgic vagabond ass back to Britain. Whenwe!!

If i had just one wish i would wish Ian Smith the breath of life again. I regret to this day being so young to never have been able to have met you and just shake your hand and say LONG LIVE IAN SMITH, LONG LIVE RHODESIA.
I say LONG LIVE RHODESIA, LONG LIVE IAN SMITH- Rhodesians rock we had a kick ass economy even under sanctions we had a currency that very few could compete with. Rhodesians got it right the world thought they could change the way greedy empires ran the show by using Rhodesia as an example now look-laugh in all your faces. Ian Smith in the end YOU WHERE RIGHT!!!
It's funny how Rhodesians can't express themselves by telling the world THEY GOT IT WRONG!!! High time the UK admits this and black Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe is a skeleton of its former self like those who still live there who starve and wait for things 'to come right'. It's a joke as most Zimbabweans have emigrated outside Zimbabwe looking for greener pastures all of which we had but the powers that be played the cards we all must now suffer for.
Politics aside I wholly respect the Selous Scouts for what they were. If Mugabe is indeed waging genocide against the Matabele (Zulu) then I hate him.
I cant say if Rhodesia was good country or nor becouse i didnt live there but i know one thing. They had one of the best flag and military uniforms in the world and hell even name Rhodesia sounds great even though is named after businessman Cecil Rhodes.
yes I will pardon and assumption! ask a starving Zimbabewian ! (who escape to South Africa)was life better in Rhodesia or Zimbabwe?
Understand! the world dosen'r care if black kills black!
I grew up in Rhodesia, with European order it was the bread basket of southern Africa now Gangster tribalism, shit Mugabe tribe, destroying the Matabele(Zulu)
Yes we did ............... because we were sold out by the British and the rest of the world who supported Mugabe and his terrorists. ...... Now look at Zimbabwe !!
I have been looking in vain for a YoyTube video of training of - I think - the Selous Scouts where the trainees are given a partially putrid carcase to eat while on a long trek. They also carry rocks in their pack. Can anyone point me to this video, please?
Ian Douglas Smith is dead. God doesn't bless dead people. Cecil Rhodes + Area = Rhodesia were kicked out by the native Africans e.g Robert Mugabe, Joshua Nkomo, etc How can your God bless a country that doesn't belong to you.
@forevah They lived in harmony with native Rhodesian's until the communist terrorists wanted to claim it all for themselves. Rhodesia was established end of 19th century, which meant that several generations of Rhodesian's have lived there. I think it's legitimate to call it their land.
I didn't know the first Matabele war (1st Chimurenga) against the Europeans was harmony .You call the Native Reserves Order and the Land Apportionment act of 1930 introduced by your fellow Europeans after they invaded Zimbabwe harmony? You approve land theft, killing & the displacing Native Africans as harmony. These so called communist terrorists just happen to be the native Africans. Did you ever wonder why? History means nothing to you.
@forevah yes harmony can mean compatibility, and I would argue they lived with in peace. History shouldn't matter to the current generation. What happened at the end of the 19th century, should not affect political issues of the current times.
I don't approve of land theft, but you obviously don't understand. The people of 1960, they didn't have their land taken from them, maybe their parents or grandfathers did, but not that current generation. So you could possibly argue that.
Of course in your own opinion and like the rest of your fellow Rhodesians history shouldn't matter because your grandfathers were on the wrong side of it. If that's the case then why do every year the US/UK celebrate the defeat of the Nazis & pursue legal actions against Nazi beneficiaries? WW2 ended many years before African countries got their bitter hard earned independence. In the eyes of most Africans, Europeans were their Nazis. Something you could never understand.
Pardon my assumption into thinking you were a nostalgic Rhodesian. With your responses, it is my opinion you should do more research about how the Africans fared under European domination especially in Zimbabwe. I might be wrong, but maybe you will see the effects of European influence and why some Africans take the hostile route in dealing with today's European descendants in Africa.
@forevah Totally agree with you. I lived there as a child and was brainwashed. It was only during my militatry service did I wake up and looking back realise what it was.
If only the British people will accept the truth and stop twisting facts and figures to hide their shame and guilt, Zimbabwe would have still been a lovely place and the relationship between the UK and Zimbabwe will still be good.
@forevah Rhodesian Govt were all from british descent, all big companies in Rhodesia had brit owners, black were not allowed to participate in elections or government all heads of armed forces were british, All banks were British, there was no such thing and Independance.
Exactly my point. I hated Ian Smith with every inch of my bones. He killed my people during the Bush war for independence. I have come to terms to accept that in life bad things happen. I don't want to use the anti-imperialistic and anti-colonial language against every European person. What happened in Zim was inevitable. It was only a matter of time that native Africans would violently take their ancestral lands back. I have moved on, but I will never accept European colonialism.
@forevah robert mugabe used the hope of the people to secure land and wealth for himself and his cronies. People in Zimbabwe are no better off than when Ian smith was in power.
Ian Smith's British ancestors did far worst by enforcing the "land apportionment act of 1930." At least Robert Mugabe is a native African, he is part of us, Ian Smith was not and was never.
The only way to combat insurgency is by counter insurgency, I think these guys proved it. This single unit was responsible for more kills than the rest of the forces combined.
@hoplite46 Colonialism was purely an economic enterprise. New, subtle methods of neo-colonialism were more beneficial and more productive, eg Nigerian oil, Congolese diamonds, and the situation in Ivory Coast and Senegal where westerners benefit extremely, thanks to puppet leaders. It was hoped Mugabe would fall in line. Thats why he got a knighthood in 1994. It wasnt betrayal. It wasnt viable anymore. Colonialism wasnt for Rhodies to have fun in the sun! It was for SHAREHOLDERS in Mayfair!!
@lawrencestoke Lawrence you are absolutley right. Wish we had been awake to that when all those young men gave their lives to defend "their2 country. It never was theirs. Do you think Smith was in on it?
@hoplite46 To answer your question I will quote Lord Chesterfield (1748) "Politicians neither love nor hate. Interest, not sentiment directs them." Smith lived in Zimbabwe till very near the end of his life under police protection. No one touched his farm! Once he understood what was to happen he capitulated and made a deal. He started off as an idealist thats why he went ahead with the UDI in 1965 instead of doing the will of London. But its difficult for politicians to go against the money men
@BryanSammis They have similar units but nothing that will ever compare. The Selous Scouts were gods in their own right. They had the power to take, when they wanted to take. They put the 'man" in the Rhodesian army slogan 'Be a man among men"
I've had a pleasure of meeting a former Selous Scouts CSM... now a padre in the British Army, the only Padre I've ever been certain could kill me with his pinky.
@2ndLtAlleyneRMC Cheers. Yes Reid-Daly the creator you see being interviewed was actually a member of C Squadron Rhodesian SAS. And he created this unit after. The selection is just ridiculous.
@2ndLtAlleyneRMC Ridiculous stuff like they would starve the men for like 5 days then then throw them a rotten baboon that had been sitting in the sun for hours. And that was all they got to eat for like a week.. 100km endurance marches with 30KG weight for example was another one... There's loadsa information out there some good sites. These guys were nails.
@JohnSmithTheSecond...BS? Hope u never ever have face never face the Best Brothers! Besides USA Army Airborne Rangers....SAS is Bad stuff ya think? THese guys are well....beyond me and Bad Ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.........
yeah,I remember a magazine called Elite Forces that was published in 1986. There was a section on Sealous scouts and there was mention of eating carion to survive in the bush.. absolute hard cunts!
I was working with a bloke back in 1998 called Les who was out in Rhodesia with Mike Hoar who told me all sorts of strange and violent stuff. Was Hoar in the sealous scouts? I salute them.

I have been looking in vain for a YoyTube video of training of - I think - the Selous Scouts where the trainees are given a partially putrid carcase to eat while on a long trek. They also carry rocks in their pack. Can anyone point me to this video, please?

@Myrmecia I've tried to find this too. I believe I've seen the clip somewhere here on the net, but I'm not sure if it actually is around anymore.
Here you can buy the DVDs about the Selous Scouts, and you will most likely find the footage in here:

Ian Douglas Smith is dead. God doesn't bless dead people. Cecil Rhodes + Area = Rhodesia were kicked out by the native Africans e.g Robert Mugabe, Joshua Nkomo, etc How can your God bless a country that doesn't belong to you.
forevah 10 months ago
@forevah They lived in harmony with native Rhodesian's until the communist terrorists wanted to claim it all for themselves. Rhodesia was established end of 19th century, which meant that several generations of Rhodesian's have lived there. I think it's legitimate to call it their land.
JohnSmithTheSecond 9 months ago
@JohnSmithTheSecond
"They lived in harmony"?????
I didn't know the first Matabele war (1st Chimurenga) against the Europeans was harmony .You call the Native Reserves Order and the Land Apportionment act of 1930 introduced by your fellow Europeans after they invaded Zimbabwe harmony? You approve land theft, killing & the displacing Native Africans as harmony. These so called communist terrorists just happen to be the native Africans. Did you ever wonder why? History means nothing to you.
forevah 9 months ago
@forevah yes harmony can mean compatibility, and I would argue they lived with in peace. History shouldn't matter to the current generation. What happened at the end of the 19th century, should not affect political issues of the current times.
I don't approve of land theft, but you obviously don't understand. The people of 1960, they didn't have their land taken from them, maybe their parents or grandfathers did, but not that current generation. So you could possibly argue that.
JohnSmithTheSecond 9 months ago
@JohnSmithTheSecond
Something you could never understand.
forevah 9 months ago
@forevah I am European and not the slightest Rhodesian.
JohnSmithTheSecond 9 months ago
@JohnSmithTheSecond

@forevah Rhodesian Govt were all from british descent, all big companies in Rhodesia had brit owners, black were not allowed to participate in elections or government all heads of armed forces were british, All banks were British, there was no such thing and Independance.
hoplite46 6 months ago
@hoplite46
I have moved on, but I will never accept European colonialism.

hoplite46 1 year ago 38
@hoplite46 Colonialism was purely an economic enterprise. New, subtle methods of neo-colonialism were more beneficial and more productive, eg Nigerian oil, Congolese diamonds, and the situation in Ivory Coast and Senegal where westerners benefit extremely, thanks to puppet leaders. It was hoped Mugabe would fall in line. Thats why he got a knighthood in 1994. It wasnt betrayal. It wasnt viable anymore. Colonialism wasnt for Rhodies to have fun in the sun! It was for SHAREHOLDERS in Mayfair!!
lawrencestoke 7 months ago
@lawrencestoke Lawrence you are absolutley right. Wish we had been awake to that when all those young men gave their lives to defend "their2 country. It never was theirs. Do you think Smith was in on it?
hoplite46 7 months ago
@hoplite46 To answer your question I will quote Lord Chesterfield (1748) "Politicians neither love nor hate. Interest, not sentiment directs them." Smith lived in Zimbabwe till very near the end of his life under police protection. No one touched his farm! Once he understood what was to happen he capitulated and made a deal. He started off as an idealist thats why he went ahead with the UDI in 1965 instead of doing the will of London. But its difficult for politicians to go against the money men
