Also, tigerman5454 is correct. Virtute runs away and winds up in a warehouse ("this noisy home full of pigeons and places to hide," "I emerged to watch abandoned machines..."). As time has passed, Virtute forgets his own name ("the sound that you found for me") and dies (as John K. Samson has stated in interviews). Tigerman5454 wasn't being a snob, that's actually what John K. Samson has said.

I saw an interview with John Samson that confirmed what tigerman5454 says.. Although he said it was more like a happy ending because Virtue had realised he didn't need his owner.. I think it must be a metaphor for broken relationships between people and how someone can go from dependency to independency.. whilst always being nostalgic for what good times they did enjoy. seems to be a very healthy way of letting go.
