  • Try using mov...

  • i get that same error as that other guy. no matter what file type i try to open, .avi, .flv., whatever, it says unknown file type and wont open

  • Thank you for showing me how to do this. I found a program online that can make custom mouse cursors, and two animated busy cursors I wanted to make probably wouldn't have come to be without this being a step in the process.

  • @DanMat6288 RealWorld Cursor Editor is great for making cursors.

  • i dont have a video option

  • I didn't rename it though. And it still won't read any .avi fles either.

  • It won't open AVI or any other file formats I tried. The same message keep appearing ''Execution error for procedure 'gimp-file-load':

    Unknown file type''

I don't know what to do.

  • @peeker28 You haft to get GAP. I explained it in the video.

  • What video files can GIMP take? I keep downloading videos onto different formats but it keeps saying it doesn't recognize the file types. I even googled/bing'd/yahoo'd it and got no answer.

  • @XxkataangnaruhinaxX When you download a video you haft to keep it's file type. If it's an avi leave it as an avi don't rename it, which is why you got that error. Also if you need to convert it convert it using Format Factory or go to online-convert . com For right now just stick with AVI until you understand file formats.

  • @mikethedj4 but I did all of those things, kept the format and converted to avi but it still doesn't recognize any file formats.. :(

  • helped a lot, thanks!

  • whenever i extract the videorange, it comes up with my last frame as the first layer and won't let me play it back

  • @MrClaymationer you have to go to filters>Animation>Playback and a little dialog box will pop up and allow you to play your gif. animation. It'll also let you play it at different speeds. 25% seems to be the most neutral playback option.

  • Hey my gif turned out really patchy even if I don't turn down the number of colors. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • @tsukushi786 In Gimp when making animations you haft to convert from RGB to Indexed, and indexed only supports 256 colors, which is most likely why it's all patchy. To avoid this I usually just make the animation Black, and White.

  • @mikethedj4 Oh what a bummer. Thanks anyway. Is Photoshop any better?

  • @tsukushi786 Back when I used PS CS3 Extended, no you could do everything in Gimp than you can in PS, however some maybe harder to accomplish than others. Now Gimp is free, open source, and cross platform. PS is payware ($700), closed source, and somewhat cross platform as it runs on windows, and mac os x, and Gimp runs on windows, linux, mac os x, solaris, and iris.

    PhotoShop's website - adobe . com/products/photoshop/

  • @tsukushi786 this is a limitation of the GIF format. Photoshop can't change that. There are other nonaudio animation formats, such as MNG and probably some others I'm forgetting. None have proliferated in the way that GIF has, however - probably due to file size.

  • where do i download gap??

  • Dude, I did what you said to do and I can't find the file.

  • when i press ok, it comes up overwrite all or overwrite file

  • @daynasorcutemoxy1 File/Save As is where you should go and name it filename.gif and of course change filename to whatever you want just not another name of a file, and you shouldn't get that.

  • @mikethedj4 ok thanks :

  • The only problem I have is slowing down my gifs...I decrease the frame rate using the extract video range window but when I upload it online, the gifs are always faster than I intend them to be. I'll put it at like 10 fps but it'll be going really fast. The gifs I make are less 500 kb btw so they have only 20 frames max

  • @Minireb123 I've never came across that problem, but I've heard about it multiple times, and some people their computer is actually running slower when playing the animation in playback in Gimp, but runs fine in a web browser. So I personally (probably bad advise) is tinker around with it, and see what speed would be the best, and actually make a hypothesis of how fast the fps are on the web then in Gimp.

  • @mikethedj4 I tinkered around a little and I figured out it was a simple issue with the delay of the frames! Ha the option to add a delay doesn't come up until you go to save the gif completely and for some reason the box for "add a delay to all frames" was unchecked. After checking it, I can increase or decrease the delay in milliseconds.

  • @Minireb123 That's what I also mentioned in the first response. Anyway glad you figured it out, and don't forget to tune into the live chat Sunday at 12:00pm -1:00pm Central Time at gimppimp . tk/live-chat

  • how do you get the frames to move properly? In playback it looks fine but when I make the file its in slow-mo

  • @monty3787 Probably the miliseconds you saved the gif as when you went to save as, or it also maybe if you have a bunch of frames (200+) it'll be slow, because of all the frames so you'd haft to either delete some frames, or bring the milliseconds down so it'll change between them faster. (all explained in my basics of animation tutorial)

  • this was a terrible guide

  • This is so neat, but whenever I upload it to tumblr, it wont play at all. It's stuck on a frame. Please help, Whats wrong?

  • How do i save the file as gif?

  • @chromespokes File/Save As/ name.gif

  • link is dead

  • @system32master They all work at the moment, but GimpTalk. The admin Ali had been working on migrating servers, and I think hosts, but not to sure. Anyway for further information just read this - gimpchat . com/viewtopic . php?f=15&t=732

  • it cant find the server... to download

  • @xXG4LdAnD0Xx Links are in the description. If you're on linux just install it in the terminal via sudo apt-get install gimp-gap

  • Lawl, I saw some BSB.

  • I've been trying to get GAP to install properly, but I cannot figure out the proper path to install it.

  • @ToTheMahcks What os are you running???

  • @mikethedj4 Win7

The install directory prompt is blank, so I've just been guessing to no avail.

  • @ToTheMahcks You should checkout photocomix-resources on deviantart the dude made an executable installation file of gap, and what's how I got gap on windows. I believe photocomix also made the gmic plugin too, but I'm not to sure.

  • @mikethedj4 this is the same executable i've been trying to find the install directory for.

  • @ToTheMahcks Go ahead, and checkout gimptalk . com/forum/viewtopic . php?f=9&t=28692&hilit=install+gap

  • @ToTheMahcks Also quick tip that gap is a bunch of plugins, and 2 scripts. So be aware of that.

  • @ToTheMahcks Just installed with Windows 7, no problem. Installed GIMP with the basic GIMP exe from their site, then ran the GAP install exe and it auto-filled in the directory. It was:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\GIMP-2.0\

  • Than you SO much. :D

  • @destroyer793 no problem, glad I could help. If you liked this tutorial checkout my others, and I just made a new gimp tutorial website not to long ago called gimppimp . tk once I finish the site then the tutorials will be up (I'm also making a gimp dvd)

  • I already installed gap, ill try compiling it, thnx so much! :D

  • @KattBrody09 no problem, just uninstall it and then compile it, don't try compiling it when it's already installed.

  • Nice tutorial, am having a huge problem when it comes to the first part, everytime i browse for my vid, an error occurs.

    "Execution error for procedure 'gimp-file-load':

    Unknown file type"

it doesnt let me follow the next step :(

    can u help me

  • @KattBrody09 reinstall gap, and if you're a Linux user, make sure you compile it from the tarball, cause I installed it with the terminal, and got the same error. When I compiled it then the problem got fixed.

  • you skipped the last step :( how do i save it to a gif animation?

  • this was amazing thank you so much! every thing worked perfect.

BUT my gif is in like super fast mode, maybe because of the amount of frames.

any way to slow it down?

  • @misstaylorxo I had this problem too. Well go to the bottom frame and only make that visible by pressing SHIFT+Click on the eye and then go to the layer above that, and click the eye on that layer to see if the frame changes, if not then duplicate that layer, and apply the rest for the other changing frames.

  • @misstaylorxo just duplicate each frame and it should slow it down as gif animations are based on frames.

  • when i extract it stays at EXTRACTING FRAMES.... help

  • @NaTsUdRaGnEeL210 you probably got a lot of frames give it time, and also they might save in your my pictures folder or your home folder. either as images or xcf project files. I'll be redoing the tutorial for my new gimp tutorial website gimppimp . tk

  • What software do you use to convert videos files to avi?

  • @haymoo1 format factory or I go to .online-convert . com

  • What file type does the vid have to be please??

Other than that, awesome video. Really informative, thanks :)

  • @RockPaperScissors95 Some file types work, and others don't asf, and avi worked for me, but I recommend sticking with audio video interleave (avi)

  • @RockPaperScissors95 format factory

  • @mikethedj4 Thanks again :) !!

  • my video doesn't appear when i want to look for it :/

  • @tootiefrutii try converting it into a different video file, and it should work

  • Everytime I try to extract the frames it says that the plugin crashed D:

    Please help!

  • I just downloaded GIMP & the video options at the top isn't even there ???

  • @ImTrashTastic That's cause you need to get GAP (Gimp Animation Package)

  • thank you so much! it really helped (:

  • thank you so much for this!

  • backstreet boys lol

  • Thank you so much! Best tutorial I found, and it worked like a charm!

  • I've done all of what you explained in the video, but for some reason, my GIF's are slowed down. Is there any way to speed them up? Is there a button I should be pressing when I save them? If you could please help I would appreciate it alot :) thanks

  • When a gif animation has so many frames it can't do the original speed, and slows it down the only way I see you making it any faster is by changing the frame (layer) timing to 1ms

  • I find it annoying how some lesser-known programs have their plugins hidden where you won't find them unless someone makes a youtube video explaining where to get it.

  • Thank you, this was helpful :)

  • thank you very much =D it work

  • Yay! It worked... I have been trying to learn how to make animated gifs what seems like forever now, and your tutorial is the only one that has worked for me so far! Your awesomeness knows no bounds!!!

  • thanks for the info! rock on

  • im wonder how to submit my video.. its just what i been working on all day.lol

  • submit, be more specific man. Upload the video on YouTube, or what???

  • ok, well make sure there isn't a project already in progress, if you still get that error, try reinstalling gap for your version of gimp, and try it again, if it still continues, see if anyone at GimpTalk can help you out.

  • Oh well GAP only supports certain file formats, however I stick with .avi file type with it as it seems to always work with me. That maybe the issue.

  • Make sure you're mode is set to indexted (Image/Mode/Indexted) and then make sure you save it as name.gif

  • Thank YOU!!

  • my GIMP don't have video tool.

    what should i do?

  • @leg3nery Download, and install GAP, I went over that in the tutorial. Links are in the description.

  • @mikethedj4 oh thank

  • I'M MADLY IN LOVE WITH YOU RIGHT NOW! Thank you so much! It's very helpful!

  • Much useful,

    thanks again. :)

  • Great video!! quick, clearly spoken, very good visibility of what you are doing on the screen. It was a big help. Thank you.

  • will this work with any other format, or does it hav to be avi?

  • avi and asf are the only ones I've tried, you can try other file types, and see if they work
