Thank you for showing me how to do this. I found a program online that can make custom mouse cursors, and two animated busy cursors I wanted to make probably wouldn't have come to be without this being a step in the process.
What video files can GIMP take? I keep downloading videos onto different formats but it keeps saying it doesn't recognize the file types. I even googled/bing'd/yahoo'd it and got no answer.
@XxkataangnaruhinaxX When you download a video you haft to keep it's file type. If it's an avi leave it as an avi don't rename it, which is why you got that error. Also if you need to convert it convert it using Format Factory or go to online-convert . com For right now just stick with AVI until you understand file formats.
@MrClaymationer you have to go to filters>Animation>Playback and a little dialog box will pop up and allow you to play your gif. animation. It'll also let you play it at different speeds. 25% seems to be the most neutral playback option.
@tsukushi786 In Gimp when making animations you haft to convert from RGB to Indexed, and indexed only supports 256 colors, which is most likely why it's all patchy. To avoid this I usually just make the animation Black, and White.
@tsukushi786 Back when I used PS CS3 Extended, no you could do everything in Gimp than you can in PS, however some maybe harder to accomplish than others. Now Gimp is free, open source, and cross platform. PS is payware ($700), closed source, and somewhat cross platform as it runs on windows, and mac os x, and Gimp runs on windows, linux, mac os x, solaris, and iris.
@tsukushi786 this is a limitation of the GIF format. Photoshop can't change that. There are other nonaudio animation formats, such as MNG and probably some others I'm forgetting. None have proliferated in the way that GIF has, however - probably due to file size.
@daynasorcutemoxy1 File/Save As is where you should go and name it filename.gif and of course change filename to whatever you want just not another name of a file, and you shouldn't get that.
The only problem I have is slowing down my gifs...I decrease the frame rate using the extract video range window but when I upload it online, the gifs are always faster than I intend them to be. I'll put it at like 10 fps but it'll be going really fast. The gifs I make are less 500 kb btw so they have only 20 frames max
@Minireb123 I've never came across that problem, but I've heard about it multiple times, and some people their computer is actually running slower when playing the animation in playback in Gimp, but runs fine in a web browser. So I personally (probably bad advise) is tinker around with it, and see what speed would be the best, and actually make a hypothesis of how fast the fps are on the web then in Gimp.
@mikethedj4 I tinkered around a little and I figured out it was a simple issue with the delay of the frames! Ha the option to add a delay doesn't come up until you go to save the gif completely and for some reason the box for "add a delay to all frames" was unchecked. After checking it, I can increase or decrease the delay in milliseconds.
@Minireb123 That's what I also mentioned in the first response. Anyway glad you figured it out, and don't forget to tune into the live chat Sunday at 12:00pm -1:00pm Central Time at gimppimp . tk/live-chat
@monty3787 Probably the miliseconds you saved the gif as when you went to save as, or it also maybe if you have a bunch of frames (200+) it'll be slow, because of all the frames so you'd haft to either delete some frames, or bring the milliseconds down so it'll change between them faster. (all explained in my basics of animation tutorial)
@system32master They all work at the moment, but GimpTalk. The admin Ali had been working on migrating servers, and I think hosts, but not to sure. Anyway for further information just read this - gimpchat . com/viewtopic . php?f=15&t=732
@ToTheMahcks You should checkout photocomix-resources on deviantart the dude made an executable installation file of gap, and what's how I got gap on windows. I believe photocomix also made the gmic plugin too, but I'm not to sure.
@ToTheMahcks Just installed with Windows 7, no problem. Installed GIMP with the basic GIMP exe from their site, then ran the GAP install exe and it auto-filled in the directory. It was:
@destroyer793 no problem, glad I could help. If you liked this tutorial checkout my others, and I just made a new gimp tutorial website not to long ago called gimppimp . tk once I finish the site then the tutorials will be up (I'm also making a gimp dvd)
@KattBrody09 reinstall gap, and if you're a Linux user, make sure you compile it from the tarball, cause I installed it with the terminal, and got the same error. When I compiled it then the problem got fixed.
@misstaylorxo I had this problem too. Well go to the bottom frame and only make that visible by pressing SHIFT+Click on the eye and then go to the layer above that, and click the eye on that layer to see if the frame changes, if not then duplicate that layer, and apply the rest for the other changing frames.
@NaTsUdRaGnEeL210 you probably got a lot of frames give it time, and also they might save in your my pictures folder or your home folder. either as images or xcf project files. I'll be redoing the tutorial for my new gimp tutorial website gimppimp . tk
I've done all of what you explained in the video, but for some reason, my GIF's are slowed down. Is there any way to speed them up? Is there a button I should be pressing when I save them? If you could please help I would appreciate it alot :) thanks
When a gif animation has so many frames it can't do the original speed, and slows it down the only way I see you making it any faster is by changing the frame (layer) timing to 1ms
I find it annoying how some lesser-known programs have their plugins hidden where you won't find them unless someone makes a youtube video explaining where to get it.
Yay! It worked... I have been trying to learn how to make animated gifs what seems like forever now, and your tutorial is the only one that has worked for me so far! Your awesomeness knows no bounds!!!
ok, well make sure there isn't a project already in progress, if you still get that error, try reinstalling gap for your version of gimp, and try it again, if it still continues, see if anyone at GimpTalk can help you out.
