He's the best of the best...I always wanted to find someone like him...a multi-instrumentalist and he sings too! His keyboard parts are perfect for the songs and he switches back and forth to guitar at just the right times...and he looks so cool on guitar...left handed & playing it upside down! Neil Carter is right up there in my book too...Keys/guitars/vocals...and he plays Sax too! UFO scored big twice with those guys! And don't get me started on all the great guitar players...and drummers...
What I wrote above was meant to be a reply to your post...
...and I'll continue here where I left off...and bass players...and I agree with what jonbecker03 said...Phil is one of the best Frontmen of all-time...he's a great singer and he writes great lyrics...I consider UFO to be his band and I have liked every incarnation of the band...bar none! Thanks Phil...God bless you and keep on rockin'! Thanks tretre462 for all the great posts!
Everyone thinks that Schenker, Mogg and Way made UFO. Perhaps they are right...I'm not here to argue. Andy Parker and Paul Raymond are the spine of this music. Which line up do I prefer? That question is within the listeners ear. I dig UFO in all its forms, the band that should have been has a lifetime fan with me for evermore.
Everyone always mentions Schenker and rightly so... but Mogg has a great voice (and shows it big time on this video) and it's got an original texture and phrasing..which llows him to come up with some different melodies to other rock bands... i think it makes UFO special and not just another 70's Led Zep clone..
I played the last 20 seconds of this song over and over and over again when it first came out. Like some super enchanted lulla-bye, I still wonder to this day where he came up with the phrasing of so many of his solo's.. Like the first MSG album, I had him wired up on a chair like some mad scientist trying to take him apart and figure out what made him tick.
I agree: the best UFO is the classic line-up with Michael Schenker. I have all the UFO albums with Michael. These solo's in elecrtric phase are absolutely brilliant. There is an awesome live version of electric phase on the UFO live album Werewolves in London.Outro solo: incredible and full of melody! This is why Schenker is the absolute number 1!!
Moog still has strong pipes. Playing the songs in the same key as he did 30 years ago. Amazing. Guys like Bono with U2 have to tune down so the songs sound slower. Surprised Moog hasn't lost his voice.
I was at the UFO concert series that same year in 1998 in San Jose, 2 nights in a row.. and matter of fact backstage the second night with (notbrandechh) and (jjs55belair),... I gt to say that.. I am still playing guitar after 34 years and what an influence Michael and UFO has been for me. These songs are TIMLESS!!!
Damn straight, these songs ARE timeless. I bought Strangers in the Night in 1979, my first proper rock album, and I still play it all the time. Pure class.
I witnessed UFO play this song live in a dinky little club in San Jose, CA, the very same year. It was simply mind blowing. In fact it's the only song I remember from the show because Schenker was brilliant with the slide, just fucking brilliant. The sound was absolutely perfect and Mogg was strong hitting every note on target. Talk about electric... it sent chills up my spine as I watched in utter disbelief.
Wow, it's weird. As much as I love Schenker, I can see now that Mogg with this crew has kept the spirit of that mind-boggling great UFO music alive, whereas Schenker really hasn't. One of my fav ufo tunes and well done. It's sad, I wish they could've left their differences at home and stuck together. such is life.

Good view of Andy Parker on this clip. He's the father of heavy rock drumming!

The drummer is Simon Wright, Andy couldn't make the reunion. Andy is the drummer now for UFO..
