We Christians are well aware of the reason for which Dec. 25 was chosen to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Messiah. We also know that it isn't actually His birthday. He WAS born...He IS alive...and His history cannot be changed by mere denial. You will meet Him one day, and you will bow before Him as you proclaim that He is King of kings. HOW you meet Him is all up to you.
December 25th isn't specifically anyone's "birthday" of historic legend and myth. The day was picked by the church to undermine a Pagan holiday celebrating the Goddess of Nature on the same day. As to when this person was born there's a great deal of conjecture. If shepherds are feeding their herd it couldn't have been December because, with Middle-Eastern winters there would be nothing to graze on in that region. "Reason for the season"? Um... no, but if makes you feel warm and fuzzy go for it.
Thanks for the comment. I agree that the nativity in December is questionable for many reasons. Nevertheless, Christ is the reason for the Christmas season--which we celebrate in December--not the winter season, which varies by hemisphere. I wonder which traditions would change if Christmas were celebrated in April, when Christ's birth likely occurred...
Despite all this, I still "feel warm and fuzzy", even in December.
The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Centuries before the arrival of this person Jesus (if he existed to begin with), early Europeans celebrated sunlight and birth in the dark days of winter. Many people celebrated earth gods during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter was done they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight. Sorry, but factually, specifically and technically that is the "reason for the season".
I'm impressed with your knowledge of 'early Europeans'. It almost sounds like you were there. I assume you'd be relying on historical records to gather your 'facts'. Not everyone takes the luxury of picking and choosing those that support their chosen conclusions.
I think all people take the luxury of picking and choosing what supports their chosen beliefs. Christians are a good example of this human nature. For example, picking and choosing portions of the bible while ignoring of "justifying" other portions that contradict their preferred beliefs.
Jeeves, no one disagrees with the reasoning for why we currently celebrate Christmas in December, all of your statements are probably accurate to some degree. Instead, we celebrate Christmas to mark the Saviors birth into the world and the implications for mankind because of that birth. Hence, the "season" referred to has little to do with a period on the calendar and much more to do with those previously stated implications.
Jesus is the Gift....He willingly came to save a world that was lost in its own sin. By Grace, His awesome love we are saved!! Thank you lord Jesus. Merry Christ Mas!! I love you Lord!!
