I would have to say that a true actor is not a performer in that way.. Before I go out on stage I go through a process of becoming another person that is on the same sacred primitive level as neurosis. A true actor feels every emotion in full effect or it IS bullshit. Neurosis helps me get to that place
I always loved this band but on the numerous run ins I had with Von Till he has been such a prick and a "Rock Star"... didn't know he thought like a hippie for real either
man, what an interview! they have GREAT things to say. it's too bad their music does nothing for me. it just makes me feel stagnant and miserable. i've heard them since the early 90's, and many of my friends worshiped them (Scott Kelly lives in the same town we do). love a night of them live... but can't listen to them at home. drains me.
@caseyforever That's cool though, Neurosis is definitely something that isn't for everyone. When I first saw them live I was somewhat dismayed by the bleakness and repetition of the music, coupled with the images being projected. It was like the evil twin of psychedelia without the hippie love and sunshine. I didn't know what to think, I was disturbed. Then I loved them. But I get you though. I've tried to get into the Swans but I just don't like them, but still respect them for their influence
I'm not a metal fan, per se, but I think I have an ear for genius when I hear it. These guys are genius. I wouldn't say that about any other metal band.

Neurosis are genius, true artists, masters of their music. This is a band who can make their music burn into your brain.Take "a sun that never sets" The first time I heard it I almost went into a trance..........WOW,Incredible musicians.
Thanks for posting! I love Neurosis. I very much like how honest their music is. They put so much in their craft, and I really appreciate the music they create.
I just got a Through Silver In Blood today. Great piece of art. This is a magnificent band, great musicians who sadly enough, their music in my opinion is very underrated and does not get the recognition it deserves. It just goes to show you how true these guys are to themselves, just doing what they love... if thats not inspiration for ya, god knws what is.
i really liked neurosis before viewing this interview, their music, the emotion, the raw fuckin power... after this... holy fuck. SO much respect to these amazing musicians. absolutely what musicians are suppose to be.
can you see the look on scotts face in the live clip of locust star its like he is in his own pycholigical trance and hes spewing this energy out on the crowd
Out of the dozen or so times I've seen Neurosis live, there have been 4 occasions where Mr. Scott Kelly has intentionally smashed his forehead into a mic or mic stand, bloodying himself. This is a man dedicated to the intensity of his craft. My guitar hero.
Just saw these guys on Saturday at the Scion Rock Fest...fucking amazing. Best show I've ever seen, and so damn LOUD!! It was actually loud enough that I had trouble breathing (I know that doesn't make sense but it's true). I wish Mastodon would have played before instead of after them, though; it really wrecked the mood after the Neurosis set
It's so rare to find musicians who can take themselves seriously without sounding pretentious. I probably wouldn't like heavy/brutal music at all were it not for Neurosis.
It's an obvious choice but through silver in blood is still the best album for me, heard it when i was 15 and was totally blown away, never heard anything like it, im 27 now and still listening to it loads. Pain of mind is a close second favourite.
I bought "Given to the Rising" a month ago and ive been listening to it over and over again for days. Absolutly awesome. I learned about them and High on Fire after I started listening to Mastodon. My three favorite bands.
If you love Given to the Rising, I recommend that you go out and pick up copies of A Sun That Never Sets and The Eye Of Every Storm in the next twenty to thirty seconds.
And yeah, Mastodon rules. I actually got into them through Neurosis. Scott Kelly does some totally kickass guest spots on Leviathan and Blood Mountain, too.
I think that's a bit unfair. I LOVE thrash as well as experimental metal, et;al. For instance if you want an example of intelligent thrash listen to a few Dave Mustaine interviews. The man is quite well spoken, whatever one may think of him personally.
I've been listening to neurosis for a few days straight now, trying to get into it, just not being able to break that surface for some reason. after watching this interview, i think it'll happen. profound respect for these guys.
von till from 6.23 - 6.54: one of the reasons why i love this band so much!
ive seen them yesterday and it was just like he says here. no performance, just music. i was standing in the front line and i could physically feel the energy of the stuff they were playing (i bet everyone in the audience did). amazing band.
Do you hear what he's saying? He is talking about the FEELINGS and EMOTIONS they wish to express through music. The in between parts that are challenges to them. These guys are ALL about EMOTION and FEELING! WOWFUCKINGWOW! What else can I say about this! AWESOME!
Saw them in a tiny bar in Reno, Nevada, and it was a religious experience. The energy they put into just completely consumed me and I'm sure everyone else there. We didn't "see a show" but were affected by something that happened TO us. It was a real experience.
Thank you Kim for posting this...I enjoy listening to their interviews almost as much as the music..It is refreshing to see this much thought and intelligence put toward music..
at one point, there is a video to A season in the sky... Does anybody have that clip? I can't find it anywhere, and this is probably ma favourite Neurosis track...
Neurosis is fucking brilliant. They are true artists and musicians in that they weren't satisfied with being one thing. They felt that they had to continue to expand and evolve even after they had accomplished the sound they were searching for, and they did.
The reason steve sounds intelligent is because he is. He went to one of the top private catholic high schools in California. I know cause I graduated with him and if your an inspiring musician or huge fan of Neurosis I must tell that Steve brought his guitar to school he plugged it into one of those headset/amp deal and practiced every lunch and break we had. He practiced EVERYDAY and I mean EVERYDAY!!! I am glad to know him from those days and am happy for his succes.
We are lucky to have a band like this in our time. When you hear people tell you that music sucks nowadays, you must point them to Neurosis. How refreshing to have a band that stays true to music as an art form. They have evolved so much and yet maintain an unsurpassed level of credibility in a fickle musical generation. I could only dream of reaching the plateau that they are on.
I love how rabid we Neurosis fans are. A true musical community. Neurosis is by far, one of the greatest living bands. I defy anyone to say otherwise.
A very good example of what music should be. I'm not talking about the style, because that's not what I mean, they could be jazz, blues, rap, whatever, their heart would still be in the same place.
I've always figured they were underrated, because bullshit bands like rage against the machine are out there alover MTV, and you barely see anything on neurosis, but after this interview, now I know why. These guys can be huge, but they are where they want to be, and I have a huge respect for them.
I agree with you to some point. The only ones they need confirmation from are themselves, and that applies to everyone. But some loudmouths just won't ever get it...
Dude, Rage Against the Machine? Why did you single them out? That's fine if you don't like them but there are incredible horrible bands more worthy of scorn(Korn, Limp Bizkit, etc.). And they aren't "all over MTV", they just recently got back together and they were never MTV darlings to begin with.
RATM has a serious work ethic not unlike Neurosis anyways
nice interview, these guys are true legends. however when scott k. said that they'd toured everywhere, that's shite. we've been waiting for as long as we've been fans and that's at least 12-13 yrs or more. hurry up lads! big continent, southern hemisphere, between africa and sth america, below asia, above antartica. no, not new zealand. fugg it...
Goosebumps. I've been a fan for over 11 years, but have never seen an interview. Everything i feel when listening to their work, their vibrant spirit, their honesty, all of it they've just confirmed and amplified. thank you for this interview.
Honestly, when will you ever hear a band this good actually criticize their own work? Jesus, these guys are still my heroes, after all of these years.
strength of fates is an amazing song. in my opinion, through silver in blood is one of the darkest albums ever made. dark in an amazing artistic manner, truly an incredible album
This is totlay awesome never saw an interview with them yet, saw them live a lot, if anyone can help me to tickets for the roadburn fest in april I would be very happy
This is the single most incridible, in depth interveiw i've seen of a band, tell me, Anyone know what channel this is? I've seen a DEP/Messhuggah Interveiw with Jens & Benjamin from the same channel
I would have to say that a true actor is not a performer in that way.. Its simple, these guys have been playing the same basic material over and over again, got bored, and tried something new.
Happens with bands all the time, but it usually doesn't take nearly 20 years to realize it as with these guys.

strength of fates is an amazing song. in my opinion, through silver in blood is one of the darkest albums ever made. dark in an amazing artistic manner, truly an incredible album

Neusosis music is amazing but the clean vocals suck, very weak
Viriatus 5 years ago
I agree with you there. Those vocal are a bit boring. But I like their other softer singing....for example "Strength of fates"

you're welcome, interviews with Neurosis are a bit hard to find

This is the single most incridible, in depth interveiw i've seen of a band, tell me, Anyone know what channel this is? I've seen a DEP/Messhuggah Interveiw with Jens & Benjamin from the same channel
JNerdy 5 years ago
Its SVT 2, the national channel #2. A long time ago Sweden only had 2 channels; SVT 1 & 2.
