I just love how the jap box says "Sonic Spinball FROM U.S.A." It's almost like SEGA/Sonic Team was like "we didn't create this pile of vomit, Americans did!"
inb4 just saying, this game is awesome in my opinion.
you know... call me crazy, but go listen to "lava shelter" from Shadow the hedgehog for a second.. doesnt it sound like this just a tiny bit? i miss this game btw. sonic spinball is so underrated. good thing i have it on Sonic Mega Collection :3 i personally liked toxic cave more as far as themes, but this is still good. lol
@animegamingdude This? I personally find the sound quality here to be quite bad, even fi I like these melodies. Go look up "The Adventures of Batman & Robin for the Genesis", to see how great the YM2612 CAN be.
@Renegade466isback What about the sound quality is bad? It's taking advantage of the YM2612's extremely glassy harmonics to emulate the sound of distortion guitars.
@SFtheWolf It's just that American composers had bad sounding YM2612 work. Thunder Force 4 had awesome guitar sounds, all created from scratch. Western composers used GEMS, which was simply MIDI to YM2612. I still do like this soundtrack though, but the drums and bass sound really low quality. The distortion for FM is easy, I can do that myself using VOPM.
@Renegade466isback I wonder why people don't like the American designed Genesis audio that much. To me, it's all music from the Greatest system ever created. It ALL sounds good. In my opinion at least.
@mistertitanic Because of the quality. Go listen to Beavis and Butt-head for the Genesis. While this does sound good, if could have better sound. In fact, I might remake it with better instruments for comparison.
@mistertitanic But it sounds too low quality. They could have improved it, but they were too lazy. I can make better quality myself for free, at home. But to be far, western composers didn't have any programming experience too, unlike the Japanese.
@Renegade466isback I personally don't care about the sound quality here because I think the song still sounds good. For me, the sound quality would have to suck pretty hard for me to not like a song. Game Boy Mega Man II, I'm talking to you.
@Renegade466isback Oh well...Hey, I have 1 question, hopefully you know. What driver did Streets of Rage 2 use? it's the highest quality Genesis game I've heard, and I've heard it uses a custom driver for it's audio.
Man, I still have my genesis and this game for it. This music is awesome. There is a tribute to this song in the game, Shadow the Hedgehog. In the lava level, they made the music to sound similar. Lava Shelter is the name of the level.
Look, I don't know the specs of the Genesis' and the SNES' sound chips, but i DO know that i ain't NEVER heard some shit THIS RAD pumpin out a Super Nintendo.....
@sonicslayton I have, easily. Depends on what you're looking for. For the mood of this, something like Lower Norfair, but the beats and instruments, Major Boss Battle from Yoshi's Island. But NOTHING is like Sonic music because Sonic music makes no flipping sense and sounds like the kind of things you'd hear on Micheal Jackson's flush.
@Kuribohchaos8 Bahahaha, the SNES was 16-bit as well, my friend. In terms of sound, SNES' sound was sample-based ASDR trickery, while the Genesis had straight-up direct FM synthesis through a MIDI interface. Saturn and Dreamcast were 32-bit in terms of processors and 64-bit graphics, N64 had a 64-bit processor (actually, the most powerful of the three most recent nintendo consoles) and Gamecube and Wii had 32-bits in both departments. 360s pack 64 bits as well, and PS3 packs 128 with Blu-Ray.
You're probably getting the Atari Jaguar "do the math" trainwreck mixed up with the N64. Atari tried claiming that the Jaguar was the first (and at the time, only) 64 bit console, which was more of a fabrication than Sega's "Blast Processing" ever could hope to be, as it was a flat out lie: the graphics processor was 64 bit while the CPU itself was just 32.
@sonicslayton The Genesis' soundchip used FM synthesis, which allowed it to have a huge range of possible sounds. Obviously you could get some pretty gritty, nasty, and flat-out fucked up sounds out of that soundchip. Some of my absolute favorite music is from Genesis games!
my fave place and music in this game.i found it hard because i was like 5-6 years old playing this game but i found the level fun.my least fave has always been the third level O_o

@GerudoUK all of the new 3d sonic games suk sega even admitted that it is a dying series the only good sonic games are the 2d ones 3d sonic games mainly suk (with the exception of the first one that was out for the gamecube that one wasn't bad
@aintplayinAround No kidding! The pachinko stage in Super Mario Sunshine is a cakewalk by comparison. One time, I got Sonic Mega Collection and finally beat this after about two hours of play time.
I have only two comments about the boss for this stage:
1. The goddamn Robo-Heads always scared the cr@p out of me. On top of that, at some point when you accidentally leave the Boiler, there's even a message that says, "Getting scared?" No shit, sherlock.
2. When you accidentally fall into the chamber with a chain and the lava cauldron, you can actually swing on the chain to safety. Careful though, it disappears after a few uses.
