Hey Eric... awesome videos, man! I had a question or two. I'm new at pipe tobacco smoking and have looking for a favorite blend or two or three... One day last week after having purchased 2oz of three different blends, I smoke about 5 bowls. The next day I noticed a bit of blistering on the tip of my tongue; I'm assuming as a result of the chemical burn or tongue bite. Is that normal? Have you ever suffered from that? I'm giving myself a couple of tobacco-free days in order to recover.
Great video! I got started pipe smoking this week after coming from Nat Sherman cigarettes. Purchased a Brebbia basket pipe, cleaners, a tamper, and threes ounces of tobacco all for about $35. Best decision of my life! Going to pipes is like color television after black and white.
@virginiatechfanx pipe smoke and cigar smoke is very different than cigarette smoke. It tastes good not good as in ice cream or cheeseburger but good as in coffee or something else. Most cigars and pipe tobacco have no additives or chemicals added, it is all natural tobacco no anti-freeze or arsenic or fiber glass just tobacco that often times has been aged for 2, 3, 5, even ten years to improve it's taste
@OneManWolfPak How many pipe smokers do you know who have oral cancer? I am certain we both agree that there is a risk of contracting oral cancer as a pipe smoker. We both agree also there is a risk of getting cancer not smoking at all. Do you have any facts about the difference in risk between the two?
*head desk* While I get all the points you're making... as a pipe smoker who picked up the pipe less than 10 years ago... videos like this do nothing but discourage people from giving it a try. A new meerschaum pipe can be found for $25 or less online and it doesn't require the same care as a briar pipe. A nice cool burning and sweet black cavendish can be had for a few dollars per pouch online. Really packing properly is the only thing needed for a good starting smoke. Encourage not discourage.
just started watching your vids. vv good info. ive smoked a pipe on an off for years but still good info. i took to very easy though. about a week. if your thinking about pipe smoking...just do it guys...you want regret it!
I bought a benjamin hartwell chesdin mixture thinking because of the price I would enjoy it and made a mistake and anyone give me hinters on the aromatic flavors I know this is a latakia blend and I think there is a different kind I should be getting
First time i smoked pipe i enjoyed it but i wasnt talented at packing/keeping it lit. Now i am skilled at it and i am Very glad i started, its a nice relaxing way to unwind from a stressful day @ work or where ever life may take you.
I disagree that pipe smoking isn't something you'd want to do on s kayaking trip. I smokeba pipe on every kayak trip I take. Just keep your pipe and tobacco in a dry box while under way. There's nothing like being miles away from civilization enjoying a bowl of your favorite smoke next to a campfire, after enjoying a meal of fresh caught fish!! I do it amlost every weekend. I do, however, usually take a corn cob pipe.
@paddletrucker Hey bro. I smoke my pipe on every kayaking trip I go on too. It makes the trips so much more relaxing. I put my pipe and tobacco and lighter together in a strong ziplock bag. It works better than a box, and it doesn't take up as much room. Its nice to see not only a kayaking brother but also a pipe smoking brother. Enjoy!!
the whole "student where it's windy and cold" bit really describes my situation. i find that the best thing to do is to buy a zippo pipe lighter, they don't get blown out as easily as a regular bic lighter. then it's all about finding a place between buildings or surrounded by trees to reduce wind. once you find a nice relaxing place just kick back and light up.
@Cropsgrinder depends on the context. if i say "im taking a break to smoke a bowl", it means a bowl of tobacco, but it doesn't necessarily mean full. some people will say "smoke a pipe", because using the term bowl can be confused with marijuana (nothing against marijuana smokers, just saying it can get confused).
It is nothing to worry about. I smoke each bowl either until all the tobacco is burned or until I no longer like how it smokes/tastes. Some swear you have to smoke the bowl down each time - I don't subscribe to that rule. Each puff should be entirely enjoyable or you should dump it out. Look for an upcoming video where I'll expand on this - I think its a good question.
is it ok to pack the tobacco..i mean to make tthe tobacco on the pipe a very tight and compact package or is it better to have the tobacco more loose inside the pipe?
and...
how would i light he pipe...with a match or a gas lighter? (i´ve been told that the lighter makes the tobacco taste like gas)
Imagine there's a lady bug near the bottom of the bowl you're packing. You want to fill the tobacco on top just snuggly enough the lady bug might be able to eventually work her way out, but nowhere near tightly enough to crush her. I have a video here on filling the pipe - you may want to watch that one too.
As for lighting, whatever you're more comfortable with is fine - just make sure you never let the flame run across the rim of the pipe. The flame should be directly above the tobacco.
I know a lot of people who first liked to smoke a pipe. But when they heard what it means to smoke a pipe (and what you need to do it) they refused and prefered to smoke a cigarette. Most of them don't like that it takes quite a lot of time to smoke a pipe. It's not possible to smoke a pipe in e.g. 5 minutes. And also the fact that everybody needs to learn how to smoke a pipe (and not just packing and litting it anyway) seems to be a disincentive to lots of them.

Hi!
Could anyone clarify what "A bowl of tobacco" means? An actual bowl, or just a fully filled pipe?
Cropsgrinder 2 years ago
The "bowl" on a pipe is the tobacco chamber. A bowl of tobacco is a filled pipe. Good question.

is it normal to have some tobacco left without burning in the pipe?
every time i change the tobacco the is some inside the pipe that did not burned out
