Elvis singing this song really hit me hard driving through a rough part of Cleveland during the winter of 1969 on assignment for NBC. Many of the inner cities of the U.S. still remain in the grip of poverty.
"If there's one thing that she don't need, it's another hungry little mouth to feed..."
Hey, "mama," what part of the word "contraceptive" do you not understand? Why do these people think sh...tting out a kid is such a major accomplishment in life? A dog or a cat can do that much, does that make them intelligent creatures?
Apparently the most effective form of family planning in the inner city still comes out of the barrel of a White police officer's gun.
I have always loved Elvis, there will never be another like him. but in country music Tim Mcgraw has done some of his music and does a great job with it. i would love to see what he can do with this song.
::from an Accounting-degreed black male born in the late '60's who NEVER lived anywhere close to a "ghetto", nor struggled for much in life, and had both well-to-do parents around::
I clearly understand that the intention of this song was to bring some form of awareness to one of America's big illnesses... but, it still seems rather racist. Why didn't Elvis sing of the various Jim Crow laws that helped to produce these so-called "ghettos"?
@DudeTC811 How is it racist? You do know it's not only black people growing up in the ghetto, right? I grew up in the ghetto, I'm hispanic. My parents grew up even worse. One of my best friends in the same situation was white.
I believe it's racist to think that the "ghetto" is only limited to black people.
Just before Chrsitmas my art teacher played this song and no one knew it and iI start singing along and everyone stops and just looks at me, and my art teacher looks at me with a surprised look.
"Forever Elvis!! "

I'm a first grade teacher in Texas, and this song makes me think of the children that come into my classroom every day. Children of broken homes, alcoholism and neglect. And I fear that this song will become their reality in the near future.
@MissRubberBunny I would add that it has more meaning in the days we live unfortunately, world is collapsing thanks to capitalism of USA.....China will prove in 10 years(US owns trillions of dollars to China) that communism is the better and more justice government that exists
@Kimberliss42 Cause he fears to walk that road,He see,s it real clear Ma,m Yes I knew how it wasbut fortune ,Luck,& Fame were on my side,as GOD would have it Good Luck In this new world.ADIOS.
I'm black and i grew up hungry in the ghetto and had to go in to foster care but now i'm 17 and angry but instead of commiting crimes by stealing and killing i enlisted in the Marine Corps.
@MPOEO right on! No one but our own damn selves holding us back these days. What are we going to say, several thousand years ago your ancestor clubed my ancestor over the head and stole our fire from the cave and many of my people died so you owe me?Oprah and Diddy did not sit around waiting for things to be handed to them. The world is yours if you just come get it.
@sgtschmitty8013 Good for you and your family Sarge. This is the right way..but its not always the way. No one should ever have to grow up being hungry, afraid, and cold. Best Wishes. ..and thank you for protecting those whom can't.
I'm white, spent many a day angry and hungry in the ghetto. Spent my teenage years locked up in boys homes. Some of us are lucky enough to realize there's a different path available to us before it's too late. Rock on and best of luck to you.
@sgtschmitty8013 Hahahaha, I do not actually worship Satan, given that nickname for the habit of thinking evil. But yeah, I don't recommend it for all, but in my case it's worked. Been self employed the last 20 years and I've enjoyed freedom and many great things most will only ever dream of. Hats off to you for protecting that freedom. Come home safe.
@sgtschmitty8013 don't be angry. that will help nothing. tell people. i listened so they will too. I don't mean to be sappy or any thing but noone should be angry with the people trapped in this sick and dying world of ourselves we live in.
@sgtschmitty8013 I love it! Bang out those first 3, 6, 9 months and you've got a GREAT future my friend. It doesn't matter where you came from, it matters how hard you are willing to work to get to where you want to be...get it...GET IT!!! Wish you the best...God bless!!! Ooooh rah!
@sgtschmitty8013 ...now as a Marine corps you can kill legitimately, what an improvement!...as long as your not doing it in your own country and you kill indescriminately on behalf of your government it makes you a better person I suppose. Surely the fact that your only way out of your dificult circumstances was to enlist to fight wars and risk your life proves that its far from an ideal world you live in
@sgtschmitty8013 I am so happy and proud for you. You have a wonderful opportunity. And you can use your background as an excuse to release all your hate and anger loose on women children and the other people in your path or...you can be a real man and understand that as an American soldier you represent something, no matter where you are or what your mission is.

@SmileXD1835 Sorry, but you seem to be very believing. Plse do look behind the curtain! As soon as someone is famous and earns better than others, there are those dark figures around him, giving him the first shot for free, and once they are on the hook, they never let their milk cows out of their claws again. Until those poor souls are insane or dead. This is how it is!!!
I wish people would stop comparing Michael to Elvis. People wish Michael was just like Elvis. But he is not, Michael is a Childmolester, and a wanna be white boy. He is the biggest racest person there is. Elvis on the other hand is by far the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will b. SO STOP COMPARING MICHAEL TO ELVIS.
@BlueLeopard200 you sick bastard insulting michael jackson like that the fuck is wrong with you the mans dead for gods sake i mean he married her not raped her
@fanbid .each to their own bro, you a youngster or you wouldn't say that lol, when ya get older you might feel different?. who care's? to me he was the king and alway's will be. oh and if you don't like it don't watch it?..........like go somewhere else or keep your comment to yourself. nobody forced you to watch this? or did they?
ok, we get it, he sings good. you guys act like the dude wrote the freaking song...lol. ridiculous, most over rated musician ever. we all know now he only sold what he sold cause he was a white dude who can sing like a black man. one person please tell me other wise that if any r and b or jazz singer back from the 1900's to even the 70's got the recognition, radio time and tv time like any white artist, the king of rock would be mediocre by comparison..he never wrote any of his songs..wtf man
@luigivocaturo how sad to have a chip on your shoulder. Get over it. There where plenty of Great WHITE artists of the day also...Where are they???? Elvis broke down that barrier for black folk, if it wasn't for him it may have been decades before black singers got the recognition they so rightly deserved. He was a fantastic singer, so what he didn't write songs? he did arrange them. Just plain BULLSHIT about the mediocre statement and the PROOF is in his popularity to this very day.
@luigivocaturo ,, you don't have to be a songwriter to be gifted,, Elvis helped music take the next step from Tin Pan alley to R&R and most music performers in the past 50 yrs will admit that he was a huge influence on them,,, one of the places the Beatles made it a point to visit when they were first in the USA was Graceland
This is awesome, Thanks for posting it! The King forever we love you Elvis! Could someone please post Elvis & Lisa Marie Presley doing this song together in HD. I can't find it any where in HD! =)
Elvis is the true king! I have a Michael Jackson devoted channel, but if weren't for greats like Elvis, people like MJ would've been nothing. Elvis is the true king of music!
Hi there gaaron, what a great song !!! you dont hear much music like this these days. i was brought up with this kinda stuff , it brings back memories and a tear to a glass eye.
He knew about being poor,he grew up in extreme poverty. Its pretty sad that you remember him as a fat hamburger junkie,he had too much talent to be remembered by that.
I remember when you left this World babes, but OMG, your music will NEVER die!

This song came from his brain, not his heart. The heart just pumps blood. The brain does the rest. I know, I know, it's just a stupid expression.
Anyway the song came from his brain. That's above the heart.

Before anybody did anything, Elvis did everything!
There's NO ONE like him. No one ever will BE like him. He was an original. So suck on that!
baehr76 1 year ago
ok, we get it, he sings good. you guys act like the dude wrote the freaking song...lol. ridiculous, most over rated musician ever. we all know now he only sold what he sold cause he was a white dude who can sing like a black man. one person please tell me other wise that if any r and b or jazz singer back from the 1900's to even the 70's got the recognition, radio time and tv time like any white artist, the king of rock would be mediocre by comparison..he never wrote any of his songs..wtf man
luigivocaturo 1 year ago
@luigivocaturo how sad to have a chip on your shoulder. Get over it. There where plenty of Great WHITE artists of the day also...Where are they???? Elvis broke down that barrier for black folk, if it wasn't for him it may have been decades before black singers got the recognition they so rightly deserved. He was a fantastic singer, so what he didn't write songs? he did arrange them. Just plain BULLSHIT about the mediocre statement and the PROOF is in his popularity to this very day.

@luigivocaturo youre right =)

Elvis is the true king! I have a Michael Jackson devoted channel, but if weren't for greats like Elvis, people like MJ would've been nothing. Elvis is the true king of music!
