  • YES! I love that you noticed the "These Days" nod :)

  • Was NOT expecting that Sunn O)))))) shirt lol. Your musical taste is very vast indeed. Respect.

  • love the album. love the review. one of the best

  • definitely one of my favourite reviews of yours

  • haha the frank zappa comment is great knowing how much longstreth hates zappa

  • @boogster123321 wow, really? Where'd you find that out? Haven't heard that before

  • @MrSplatterPlatter type in david longstreth interview av club on google

  • I wish you would feature more samples from the songs like you do in this review

  • Back in the day, Anthony conjured music with his hands.

  • This album rules like fuckin crazy. Like Henry VIII. Choppin bitches heads off, NBD.

  • Damn you, Anthony, we think alike again :D ! Just as soon as I heard "please don't confront me with my failures" I thought of Nico (except I like Nickel Eye's cover much more)!

  • Deep snow and rain - the WORST weather EVER! I can hear those notes in Anthony's voice in the intro. I'd feel just the same.

  • BITCH MADE REVIEW. NEEDLE DROP IS TOP DAWG. BITTE ORCA BEASTING. NEEDLE DROP DROPPED A DOPE NEEDLE REVIEW ON THIS ALBUM, PINPOINTING DOPE SHIT. SWAG SWAG SWAG SWAG SWAG

  • Wow. Just wow. Reviewing music. I think my life is now complete

  • Angel and Amber are total. babes. I'm smitten.

  • wow the nico thing was very insightful. I really like both songs

  • lol sun 0))

  • I'm glad to hear some love for this album.

  • You should put quick samples of the album back into your reviews again. What, are there legal issues with that now?

  • You gave the absolute perfect description with the boundary of abstract and normal. Usually the weird stuff i love takes me a few tries to warm up to but with this album I loved every track right away but whenever it comes on I always know its nothing like anything else i own.

  • "Best album of the year".. pfft. It's the best album of the decade.

  • Thanks a lot for the Jackson Browne tip, didn't know that though I'm a huge DP fan

  • I would like you to review Rose Kemp's new album "Golden Shroud". It's a mix of folk music and doom metal.

  • I think you don't know shit about music, you are NOT the busiest music nerd, I hate your haircut and your SunnO)) tee is horrible!

  • Yep, it's a strong 8 with me too. And I've gotta say 'Stillness is the Move' is not only my favourite track of the album but of the entire year. I just can't get over how stunning the female vocals are in that song and its simplicity works splendidly as a soothing centrepiece amid the complex chaos of the rest of the album. Overrall, a very rewarding listen.

  • Found this band on Last.fm, so I'm like, Anthony, what do you think of them? Watching some of your older stuff in here, I really enjoy how you used so many examples from what you were reviewing to further your points. I thought this was great for less savvy music term listeners like myself. It allowed me to instantly put a face, or sound, to your terms. Have you considered doing this more often?

  • two doves is so sexie

  • oh man I really don't like these guys BLAH

  • Your awesome!!! Keep it up!

  • Really liked this album, also like your reviews alot, wish I could do this

  • shoulda given it a 10!

  • I would have to say that this is easily one of the best albums of 2009. Every song is worth listening to. Even the whole way through.

  • i love the way you articulate this album/your impresions and ideas.

They do sit between the lines.

    Great review.

  • Do you only make videos about already pitchfork reviewed albums and electro pop?

  • @anatomyofluke he does a lot of metal and hiphop-albums too. And TND's better than P4K, by miles.

  • Man thanks for letting me know about that band. I never heard of it. I am only 14 and i have very different tastes now and i am alot more open to weird songs.

  • Advice From a Fellow Listener: The next time you check out this album, play it in your car. Everything really comes together in this when you pass 40 MPH on the freeway, at the very least on "Cannibal Resource." Lowering your windows can't hurt either.

  • When I first watched this video and heard you say Stillness is the Move was your least favorite I thought you were nuts, but after listening to the album about 100 more times, I realized completely agree with you. It just stands out in comparison to how complicated and 'full' the other songs on the album sound.

On a side note, I can't decide whether I prefer Bitte Orca or Rise Above. They are both genius, but in different ways.

  • Totally agree with you on Stilness. I still like the track though.

  • One of the most interesting things about this album is the abrupt changes in temo, rythmn, dynamic, etc. Doesn't work 100 % of the time, but there are times when it totally does, like the last minute or so of Temecula Sunrise

  • Wow... I needed a term to categorize the work of Dirty Projectors and you just nailed it right in the head. They sit in the border between normal and abnormal, erasing the line and commuting both parenthesis.

I personally love "Stillness is the move" but If I had to replace that track, I would put "Naked we made it" instead. Now that, would make a 5 stars album, no doubt. To me it is already 5 stars though.

Excellent review, I like your corporal expression.

  • you really like to talk with your hands!

  • Hmmm... I love this album. I get why people call this difficult, but I think it's easy-listening. :D 9/10

  • dweeb

  • Thank you! :-) This is the best comment anyone has ever left me. I hope you have an amazing, beautiful, fulfilling life.

  • LOL ROFL: HUMOR!

  • No, I'm really serious.

  • :-) kk!

  • brilliant review

  • Glad you dug it! :-D *hi five*

  • Should also mention that I saw them live in Montreal a few months back, opening for TV On The Radio. My goodness, definitely my most cherished concert of 2009.

  • Amen on the "Two Doves" love! Definitely my favorite track on the LP. Although I'm a big "Stillness Is The Move" fan too. Different strokes for different folks though! Keep it up, Anthony. Loving these video reviews.

  • nice sunn o))) shirt. was kind of surprised by it.

  • Was it surprising because you haven't seen it before, or was it a surprise because this is a DP review? :-p

  • 1.) Rise Above is not a Black Flag album - you're thinking of Damaged.

2.) Auto-Tune is used on the strings and backup vocals on "Useful Chamber" but rarely anywhere else (if at all). I've seen them live a few times, and they hit each part exactly as on the album without Antares.

  • Ah, you're right. Also, I didn't think the vox there touched that much, if at all. I mean, I've heard live sessions, and the vox were pretty on target. Also, is your name a Mt. Eerie reference?

  • There are a few spots in select places where Auto-Tune is purposely glitched (see Useful...). And yes, the username is a Mount Eerie reference.

  • I totally agree about Stillness is the Move. I thought I was the only one. Cannibal Resource is the strongest for me. Still one of my favorite albums of 09.

  • The first thing I thought of when I heard Two Doves was Nico. Nico nico nico.

  • Ive seen them play and i didnt become a fan... after watching your review i might take another listen. I havent listened to the album as a whole but like you say they can be difficult at first to get into but im usually good at that shit...

  • Yeah, I can't vouch for their live show, but this LP is definitely more of a grower than shower.

  • One of my Top 5 albums of the year, awsm review. Congrats

  • Thanks! :-D

  • I'm actually gonna make a vid about my 20 favorite albums of the year very soon, so stick around. :-D

  • I really liked the first sample. I'm gonna give it a listen!

  • Let me know if you end up digging it. :-)

  • Been listening some and I've got a feeling it's going on my list of CD's to buy.

  • img14 (dot) imageshack (dot) us/img14/8799/tnd (dot) png

well that was a bad/good time to stop. :P

  • LULZ!

  • ...new genre of music: 'enigmagic', a combo of enigma and magic, as in the stylings of bitte orca. good stuff :)

  • agreed! ...8

  • Snow !!! I don't have a fucking snow here !!! Lucky ! Lucky bastard :P

  • yes, yes. and YES!

    this shit is cash.

  • then cash in, bro!

  • I haaaaaaated this album. Well thought out review however.

  • At least you liked the review. :-D

  • I got this one on vinyl...good stuff!

I really hated it when I first listened to it but it eventually grew on me.

  • yeah, it's most definitely a grower. :-p

  • Comment removed

  • I don't like this album at all. I tried, I swear.

but in any case, solid review, Anthony.

what is your album of the year?

  • Oh, I'll make a vid about my best of 2009, don't worry. :-D

  • This is an absolutely delicious album.

  • Woot woot!

  • GREAT GREAT review! I have been givin this album a short listen, and I you had some of the thoughts I had as well. Gonna dig more into it, for sure

  • Awesome! Let me know if you end up loving it with all your heart. :-D

  • Stillness is the Move was the first track from them I ever heard, I loved it. But i found it to be totally misleading, because when I checked out the album, it was totally different and I was disappointed to find out the girls weren't doing the majority of the vocals. I was never able to get into Dave's vocals.

  • I know! That's part of why I don't like Stillness. I mean, it sticks out on the album like a sore thumb. It basically screams, "Hey, this is the single we put on the LP in order to get people interested. K, bye!"

  • Exactly, man.

Also, I'm loving the snow in the intro. It's cool because we get to see all of the seasonal changes in your area.

  • Hahahah! I know! That was my plan when I originally started it. :-p

  • I like the sounds but the autotune on the vocals ruin it.

  • Are they auto-tuned? I can't tell. They don't sound that mechanical, do they?

  • they are definitly tweeked. parts sound authentic but listen to the first time the dude sings on Useful Chamber

  • Sorry, but apart from the stillness is the move song, that sounds like Beyonce and the first song from the album that has a decent melody, this album is full of filler. Yes, the music sounds "complex" but it is not interesting or melodic enough. This gtr player googles stuff like "complex chords", "complex chord progressions", "hardest chord of all time" and then makes songs out of those chords google gives him. True story.

  • Hahhahahaah! But Longstreth is a student of the Yale Music School. Don't you think he could have learned those really hard chords there?

  • Stillness Is The Move, that song is the song that makes all the pretty girls come up to me and ask "What are you playing?" and then they bat their eyelashes. And for brief instant, I feel important.

I think Dirty Projectors just do a great job making complex, weird music sound very pretty. It's something a lay person could listen to and not even realise how intricate it is and I could approach them and say "WHOA ! Are you actually listening to something good ? GTFO !"

  • Lulz. I agree with the things you say.

  • nice, that was a lot better than my review :D haha

  • :-p

  • That is a cool fucking shirt.

  • *internet hug*
