Review Cleric - Regressions! Just give it a chance! I bet you'll enjoy it! Just listen to the album in it's entirety once!! You [probably] won't regret it!! (And yes, I'm personally visiting each of your videos!! THIS IS IMPORTANT, DAMNIT!!)
Damn you, Anthony, we think alike again :D ! Just as soon as I heard "please don't confront me with my failures" I thought of Nico (except I like Nickel Eye's cover much more)!
BITCH MADE REVIEW. NEEDLE DROP IS TOP DAWG. BITTE ORCA BEASTING. NEEDLE DROP DROPPED A DOPE NEEDLE REVIEW ON THIS ALBUM, PINPOINTING DOPE SHIT. SWAG SWAG SWAG SWAG SWAG
You gave the absolute perfect description with the boundary of abstract and normal. Usually the weird stuff i love takes me a few tries to warm up to but with this album I loved every track right away but whenever it comes on I always know its nothing like anything else i own.
Yep, it's a strong 8 with me too. And I've gotta say 'Stillness is the Move' is not only my favourite track of the album but of the entire year. I just can't get over how stunning the female vocals are in that song and its simplicity works splendidly as a soothing centrepiece amid the complex chaos of the rest of the album. Overrall, a very rewarding listen.
Found this band on Last.fm, so I'm like, Anthony, what do you think of them? Watching some of your older stuff in here, I really enjoy how you used so many examples from what you were reviewing to further your points. I thought this was great for less savvy music term listeners like myself. It allowed me to instantly put a face, or sound, to your terms. Have you considered doing this more often?
Man thanks for letting me know about that band. I never heard of it. I am only 14 and i have very different tastes now and i am alot more open to weird songs.
Advice From a Fellow Listener: The next time you check out this album, play it in your car. Everything really comes together in this when you pass 40 MPH on the freeway, at the very least on "Cannibal Resource." Lowering your windows can't hurt either.
When I first watched this video and heard you say Stillness is the Move was your least favorite I thought you were nuts, but after listening to the album about 100 more times, I realized completely agree with you. It just stands out in comparison to how complicated and 'full' the other songs on the album sound.
On a side note, I can't decide whether I prefer Bitte Orca or Rise Above. They are both genius, but in different ways.
One of the most interesting things about this album is the abrupt changes in temo, rythmn, dynamic, etc. Doesn't work 100 % of the time, but there are times when it totally does, like the last minute or so of Temecula Sunrise
Wow... I needed a term to categorize the work of Dirty Projectors and you just nailed it right in the head. They sit in the border between normal and abnormal, erasing the line and commuting both parenthesis.
I personally love "Stillness is the move" but If I had to replace that track, I would put "Naked we made it" instead. Now that, would make a 5 stars album, no doubt. To me it is already 5 stars though.
Excellent review, I like your corporal expression.
Should also mention that I saw them live in Montreal a few months back, opening for TV On The Radio. My goodness, definitely my most cherished concert of 2009.
Amen on the "Two Doves" love! Definitely my favorite track on the LP. Although I'm a big "Stillness Is The Move" fan too. Different strokes for different folks though! Keep it up, Anthony. Loving these video reviews.
1.) Rise Above is not a Black Flag album - you're thinking of Damaged.
2.) Auto-Tune is used on the strings and backup vocals on "Useful Chamber" but rarely anywhere else (if at all). I've seen them live a few times, and they hit each part exactly as on the album without Antares.
Ah, you're right. Also, I didn't think the vox there touched that much, if at all. I mean, I've heard live sessions, and the vox were pretty on target. Also, is your name a Mt. Eerie reference?
I totally agree about Stillness is the Move. I thought I was the only one. Cannibal Resource is the strongest for me. Still one of my favorite albums of 09.
Ive seen them play and i didnt become a fan... after watching your review i might take another listen. I havent listened to the album as a whole but like you say they can be difficult at first to get into but im usually good at that shit...
Stillness is the Move was the first track from them I ever heard, I loved it. But i found it to be totally misleading, because when I checked out the album, it was totally different and I was disappointed to find out the girls weren't doing the majority of the vocals. I was never able to get into Dave's vocals.
I know! That's part of why I don't like Stillness. I mean, it sticks out on the album like a sore thumb. It basically screams, "Hey, this is the single we put on the LP in order to get people interested. K, bye!"
Sorry, but apart from the stillness is the move song, that sounds like Beyonce and the first song from the album that has a decent melody, this album is full of filler. Yes, the music sounds "complex" but it is not interesting or melodic enough. This gtr player googles stuff like "complex chords", "complex chord progressions", "hardest chord of all time" and then makes songs out of those chords google gives him. True story.
Stillness Is The Move, that song is the song that makes all the pretty girls come up to me and ask "What are you playing?" and then they bat their eyelashes. And for brief instant, I feel important.
I think Dirty Projectors just do a great job making complex, weird music sound very pretty. It's something a lay person could listen to and not even realise how intricate it is and I could approach them and say "WHOA ! Are you actually listening to something good ? GTFO !"
YES! I love that you noticed the "These Days" nod :)
