Ya know I had to say, Eddie Kendricks was known for showing devout loyalty to Paul Williams whereas if Paul was unable to perform, he'd never go on. But Paul seemed to have no problem performing when Eddie wasn't around and/or when Eddie wasn't with the Temps anymore. I mean technically Paul didn't when Eddie left cuz he had been too sick and stuck around as a coreographer and writer, but still, from what I could gather, Paul wasn't very appreciative of Eddie's loyalty in actuality. Sad...

Eddie walked out in 1971, after a show, before "Just My Imagination" climbed to number one on all the music charts. This performance was before that. Look at the guys clean shaven faces. By the time of Eddie's departure, most of them were sporting beards, goatees, and soul patches.

This performance would not have been after David and Eddie left due to a disagreement. David left three years before Eddie. David was released in 1968, and Eddie walked out during a concert engagement between shows, according to Otis' book 'Temptations'. Dennis was considered when David became more difficult to work with. Dennis' first TV appearance was the 'TCB' special with the Supremes, all were present minus David. Eddie may have just missed this TV performance due to personal reasons.

Just to clear things up. Otis can sing a high falsetto, which he has done from time to time. You can hear him in the background just under Eddie on "All I Need" and several other songs. Eddie encouraged him, telling him to not limit himself. However, he has not done that on a lead single, and this performance is obviously a lip synch to Eddie's vocals. However, the Tempts had performed several times without David, so it is not likely that Eddie is missing here due to anger over David's departure

Most of the videos for Television were lipsynched back then. This was taped during the time that David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks had both left the group because of a disagreement. But the show still had to go on. So stop trying to shoot them down they did a wonderful job performing this show without Eddie.

Speaking of original Temptations.... That is not fair to Dennis Edwards. He filled the void when David Ruffin was not in the group and they had great hits while he was singing. And, as great as David Ruffin was, individually, and with the Temptations, he was not technically an original either. He was there when they had their first big hit. All of them helped develop that sound and that style we love.

@blueyedwolf861211 correction: otis CAN sing...just not in the same vein as the lead singers that made the Tempts famous....& more so, Otis had the most important harmony note in the group which is THE MIDDLE....without the middle 2nd tenor, the baritone & 1st tenor suffers so Otis note was the key in holding together

Otis is the only orginial member still alive. Paul died in the early 1970s. Police and corner ruled it a sucide but there are many questions left unanswered which means he could have been killed. Eddie died of lung cancer. David died from complications of years of drug use. Melvin died from complication of rehumitoid arthritis, a flesh eatting diease caused by his being shot, which caused him to be confinded to a wheelchair.
