I first heard this song a few months ago when I saw them live. This and Stars Die were songs that were unfamiliar to me. I loved them instantly, and to think I had met Steve Wilson accidentally once in Opeth's dressing room without knowing it was him.
@ritualentertainment OMGGGGG WTFFFFFFF haha amazing. PT don't come to New Zealand so I've yet to see them live, I am New Zealand's biggest Steven Wilson fan haha, I own nearly everything he and PT have put out, you lucky person :)
@SlaveExplosion You own nearly everything Steven and PT ever put out? That's pretty impressive, considering that Steve was involved in the making of 744 (probably more by now) albums.
@ryder187mac Well yeah, but that's getting a bit pedantic... it's not exactly going to be easy to a) afford all of that and b) get a hold of it all.
I have all Bass Communion, Blackfield, PT (plus every PT vinyl), IEM, No-Man, I have some of PT's members solo albums as well. All PT DVDs, Blackfield DVD, and No-man's DVD.
Just because he was "involved" with making other albums, doesn't mean he wrote the material.
But yes, no really much a fan obviously, I should buy more.
@SlaveExplosion I wasn't being serious, but then again, about your point of being involved, I'm pretty sure everything he was involved with, he was interested in, which should by default make the music worth having a look into :)
Hi, I'm not native english speaker and I don't understand what Steven means or refers to when he says "russia on ice is burning a hole".
And in fact it's most of the song which is unclear for me, I understand he's left by someone, drowning in pain etc but I think I miss most of the meaning of the song. (thoughts like coal, matter of time...)
Can someone help me to understand, or at least give me his interpretation if even for native it's necessary to interpret.
@dernierdoudou He's referring to Vodka. The Russian origin alcoholic drink, you kow? He's having it with ice (or "on the rocks" as one might call it) to get inebriated, seemingly to drown his sorrows away. Hope that helps :)
@dernierdoudou Coal implying that the haunting thoughts are burning him through, making him despair in his misery. And a matter of time implies that something is going to happen soon.
@TheRedBrickWall it's nice to remind me that french people have a really poor level in english :) thks for the meaning, does the hole is his throat? the "whole thing" a relationship that he destroyed?
@dernierdoudou Haha not a problem, man. I'm from India and I stay there :) The 'hole' is a metaphorical one in his soul, like a certain hollowness or emptiness, And yes your second guess is right, although he does not believe he destroyed it.

at 6:49 - 7:16 I was like "what the hell is happening?"
and then from 7:17 - 8:47 I was like "woow awesome!"
and finally from 8:48 to the end I was like "OHMAHGAWD"

At about :36 when the piano/synth comes in, it sounds so haunting, but so good.

I burn it to the ground.
Well what the hell did you say?
You said you hate me this way.
Its just a matter of time."
