Good comment - thank you. I am awre that many of our songs are derivative. One has been identified as sharing the melody to O Sanctisima. (Sicily in Christian Harmony book)
Wow, this is amazing. I just discovered Sacred Harp music. Absolutely wonderful. I'm not sure if you all know the deep roots of this music. The lyrics are almost identical to an Elizabethan Madrigal by Thomas Tompkins (When David Heard that Absalom was Slain). Several other madrigals from this same period use the same lyrics. Even the melody is similar to Tompkins. What an amazing connection!
Thanks bob. I know that is a compliment. But, here's some "inside info" for you. We do not consider ourselves performers, not that there is anything wrong with that.
At every singing I have ever been to, onlookers are invited and encouraged to join in. Tonight, we had a small gathering and I did that very thing. Though they protested they "did not sing", pretty soon, they were at least trying and one of the guys turned out to be a good bass singer. The others blended right in.
Wonderful job! Absolutely beautiful. I love this song so much!

It's about participation - community - harmony.
I firmly believe that we think we can't sing for one reason. And that is, we don't sing. We listen to other people sing.
