@BBshyJazzArtist I disagree ,remember this is Lorber's song , but Duke comes in and plays with much more articulation and direction. let Jeff Lorber try to play one of Duke's songs and you will see who is more skilfull and it's not J.Lorber, but he is an excellent keyboardist no doubt.
JL uses his technical ability right away to express his speed, dirty sound that is very bluesy, predictable phrasing, very passionate and delivers a rollercoaster ride......
GD relaxes, lays back, builds his solo slower, tells the story with a awesome Build point, uses Harmony to complement the solo lines, some would consider his solo more meaningful or Tastier because he seems to always leave "SPACE" he lets his solos breath...
@helmusico If you check out the Rhodes website, there is a short video on the new tines that are now being used. They won't break like the old ones, but that probably has had an effect on the sound.
And Watersign should have won the Grammy award the year it came out hands down. I have all these Lorber sides on vinyl from l980. Maybe better fish them out of storage too. But no space....!
George coming from a good friend and piano player downunder, Howlin' Bob Howlett, grew up with George. The mod's he did to his instruments were a big part of his able to achieve such wonderful innovation. I'll see if I can remember what they were. Filter pedals for the Arp. And something for the Rhodes.
Damn, we covered this Tune (Tune 88) in l982 in college. Two great players. All I can say is that Rhodes Jeff is playing on is the stink. Heat I mean. I guess today I have to go fish out my Rhodes Mk ll 73 key from storage and the Leslie 60 satellite tone cabinets with the rotary capacitor. They still work, with a Rhodie preamp. Needs new hammer tips.
Jeff Lorber 'predictable phrasing' and 'passionate' expression (I love that!) make him a icon in jazz pop smooth, an absolute winner of hearts to jazz nowadays, Jeff brings jazz to the masses!! and while I love and enjoy different jazz pianist styles, Jeff is stone grabbed in a honor place in my listening experience. And Gorge Duke! Another great jazz pop titan! definitely a keyboard and synthesizer innovator whom is a incredible piano player, also important of my influences spectrum.
@keybobrob ......are you crazy ? Elton John and Billy Joel are song writers and not considered master keyboardists . Their Piano playing only compliments their singing. They would get spanked and be embarrased in this type of setting . Not their thing , dude !
@JohnnieRhodes hahahaha...c'mon man lighten up!!...IT WAS JOKE!!....YOU COULDNT FIGURE THAT OUT....hehehe....come on johnnierhodes...please tell me ur comment was playing a joke on my joke...please. joke dude...joke...dude. I grew up on lorber and duke, herbie, chic, and the previous masters timmons, silver, garland, garner, jones, flanagan, evans,...and of course GOD, ART TATUM!!.......also the best of them all...Jerry lee lewis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@keybobrob ....well....on You-tube ignorance runs rampant and you place yourself in that group with your comment. Me lighten up ? How about practicing some internet etiquette and not assuming your intent will be known ? And I am assuming that your Jerry Lee Lewis comment is also a joke and you really don't belong with the ignorant people ! Oscar Peterson deserves mention over most of your list . And the use of the word Please is a little melodramatic...don't you think ? FIGURE THAT !
@philluna90 hahaha....come on dude....i was being facetious....u actually think i was serious???????...hahahahha....lighten up kat.... U actually explained billy and elton's playing>>
never compare a pop pianist to a jazz.....that's like asking an elementary school science teacher to go up against Steven Hawkings..........LOL.... laughable
@philluna90 hahaha...i hear you...i guess ur right about that...Lol All i can say is if some bozo is dumb enough to SERIOUSLY compare pianist like those...then i would recommend you don't even waste ur energy on trying to educate them....they are waaaay to stupid to understand you anyway!!.....know what i mean? peace bro ;-)
@nezkeys79 HUH???...What are you talking about....26 years?????????????????...this on a few years ago...look at the age of lorber and duke...thats a big hint...not to mention the rhodes never came close to looking like these do a couple decades ago....are u confusing the Tune 88 WITH THE YEAR 88???....LOL...u r now absolved of ur guilt my son...rest now...lol

@nezkeys got you man...no problem dude my apologies my friend...lol...no malice intended...it just struck me as odd..And i also saw the math did not add up as well...which added to my being perplexed...ur 26?...ok cool...but in all honesty u gotta admit the ambiguity was there? Generally speaking, who would expect a kid between the ages of 1-5 or 6 or would be come across a video like this one much less study it...note i said "generally speaking"..of course there are those that have. Peace!
I second that!! I've heard a few cuts from it and it's right there! He has always been just so jacked into the groove and knows where things are and where they're going. I agree with all the comments people made in this thread about him having fun. Look for some vids on here with him jamming with Billy Cobham. Great, great stuff!
George Duke just cracks me up. I love to watch and hear him in these videos. He is having SO much fun and has that sly grin on his face. Watch him with Billy Cobham on some of those videos. I like Jeff Lorber very much, too, but look at George. He is havin a blast and seems like he always does. There's a reason why so many artists want to work with George Duke. He is an unbelievable talent.
always wanted to see the Duke play with other keyboardest and Jeff Lorber is one of the all time greats , i love to see Joe Sample on stage also and Herbie Hancock all of them playing.. oh!! dont forget Chick Corea...hey!!!

I agree with your assessment but you couldnt be a keyboard player, cuz JL licks are like the standard, predictable is pretty harsh cuz ive searched but found none with the sublimity. Trus me GD licks are slower so easier to workout tho still tough.
@otaama I am humbled every time I hear a master improviser like GD and JL. The result is normally a well played solo but GD and JL approach the story from a very different perspective. I like the space, taste and harmonic structure that GD uses, verse Speed that JL uses. I am learning from guys like you all the time, trying to improve my craft. Having played the piano for over 30 years, I can tell you it is still a lot of work. Thanks for teaching me. Professor of Music/WJU Victor Bright
@ProfessorBright Gr8 analysis, I agree with you. I Play the trumpet and there are some great players who always use a lot of pyrotechnics to their playing like Arturo Sandoval and then there are other just great pure jazz players like Wynton Marsalis.
haha JL solo was killin.. but you can see jeff get pissed when GD get on the keys in his solo.. he just gives him this stone look.. ..lol like.."You motha......*&%#
I love how Bromberg told George Duke real quick what the changes were...and Duke kills on it, awesome harmonic thinking. These are two of the finest keyboard players of all time and the finest players you'll see anywhere.
