As a political organizer, I often have to face very hostile, insane, or hysterical people. An old friend of mine who organized for voting rights of blacks in Selma Alabama back in the 40's up to the 60's described the difficulties with frightened blacks avoiding Martin Luther King because the whites branded him an "outsider troublemaker" and threatened anyone associating with him, to lose their jobs.
How many of us today could say we would have been as brave as the members of the White Rose?The odds against them were huge but they acted for the sake of humanity to let people know the truth.

@Amiduffer Thanx for that, there is a video somewhere on YouTube of a survivor of the White Rose Society, he actually received a prison sentence from Freisler but managed to survive the war and have an interview that was taped and ended up on YouTube. I find that amazing actually. Anyway, thanx for the vid, these were truly remarkable people. Cheers!!

Actually many of us try to wake people up to the lies and brutality of various gouvernments. Over and over they let themselves get beaten and bruised and even killed by police and other armed gouvernment forces.
They're usually spat at for their actions by the public, at least over here in germany these days.
It is only in history that these people are considered heroic.

As a political organizer, I often have to face very hostile, insane, or hysterical people. An old friend of mine who organized for voting rights of blacks in Selma Alabama back in the 40's up to the 60's described the difficulties with frightened blacks avoiding Martin Luther King because the whites branded him an "outsider troublemaker" and threatened anyone associating with him, to lose their jobs.

The song may be respectfully old - but many Germans can´t stand it anymore and find it rather embarrassing or just kitschy.
I know such opinions may do injustice to the song, but history always changes - also such of songs !

@clintonearlwalker:We don´t learn the facts i know in university but it is inside the curriculum of EVERY German high school (Gymnasium) + it gets even taught in lower secondary school (the German school system makes a difference between"Hauptschule"(lower secondary school which ends with the 10th class) + "Gymnasium"+ its other form "Gesamtschule"(which may be the same as comprehensive school in Britain). The"Gesamtschule"was (+ still is) combatted by conservatives here,but very wide-spread.

und ich war bei genug Demos dabei, um sagen zu können, dass die Polizei keine Gewalt in Deutschland provoziert. Natürlich gibt es Außnahmen, aber die sind dennoch in der Unterzahl.
Vor einer Zeit wurde auch `ne Zecke erschossen, hat mit nem Messer `nen Familienvater in den Hals gestochen, der daraufhin gestorben ist ( was hat der eigentlich gemacht, außer seinen Job? ) . Danach wollte die Zecke weiter angreifen und wurde direkt erschossen (Kopfschuss).

erstmal, ist der G8 nicht unbedingt schlecht. Zweitens habe ich das mit den Faschisten beschützenden Polizisten noch NIE in Deutschland erlebt, aber man kann ja mal sinnlose Kommentare loslassen obwohl man eigentlich keine Ahnung von hat. es ist ein sehr tolles lied, ich liebe es und es regte mich immer an ein freidenker zu sein. was damals passierte darf sich niemals wiederhollen aber das hier und jetzt ist auch nicht mehr besser. es geht leider immer weiter den bach runter, aber um meine stimmung aufzuheitern. höre ich dieses lied oftmals hintereinander an.

just a quick note: you messed up the English tranlation of the fourth stanza. While the first line beloangs to the fourth stanza, the second is from the third and after that you write the fifth stanza, which you did not sing and which is not written down in the German version that you wrote above the translation. You might want to correct that. :-)
