This movie is a (literally) gross misunderstanding of the accounts of a talented artist and a huge insult to feminism. If you knew the history of the REAL Artemisia Gentileschi, you would not look highly of this film.
@thespiritmage Maybe so but it's an introduction to an artist where few would know about her had the the film not been made. From here perhaps some will read about her. If not, at least, they know she existed. Some might make an effort to see her work as well. Would you rather some idiot let Bradgelina or Bennifer or Lohan with her ankle monitor play this role? That would have been a real disaster.
@thespiritmage? So which is the real history? Why do you say is a misunderstanding? I watched the movie and I liked it but I would like to know why you say that things...
How good is this movie on a scale of 1-5? Anyone? I'm becoming an artist and studying art, so I think this movie will at least LOOK good and I like the costume designs and cinematography, but I wonder if this film actually has substance.
@killerbunny123123 I found it at the library at "L'Alliance Francaise de Chicago. If there an Alliance in your town maybe they have it. You might be able to buy it from fnac.fr but make certain it's an American format not PAL.

This movie is extremely disappointing and does not do any justice to a truly remarkable person. You only have to look at Artemisia Gentileschi's work to figure out that this is nothing but highly romanticized fiction not a biography and certainly not true to her character. In response to the comment above, Artemisia's work was indeed very confronting, especially to the men of her time but her skill did earn her respect and numerous important commissions ensuring her success as an artist.
I think it's very important to realize that although the movie suggests otherwise, Agostino never did admit that he raped her, and many people thought her to be a whore. She was a very strong woman, living in a time where she never even received proper appreciation for her work because she was female.
@myvidOs ==No doubt Agostino never admitted to raping her....just like he never admitted raping his first wife.....which is how he acquired her...also, she misteriously disappeared....he was believed to have killed her...he couldn't even keep up with his own lies in court and was convicted for raping Artemesia
she's beautiful now! Valentina has landed the role of Salome in True Blood’s fifth season.
