that's not true. First of all, misbun was not as good as zhao or yang yang. Also, professional players today are simply much quicker than players in the past. Technology and development of technique allows players today to hit shots that would simply be stunning to players of the past. Lin Dan and almost anyone in the top 20 today would demolish misbun in his prime.

naw man. I just watched a match between morten frost and zhao. Zhao was smashing constantly, more than lin dan does nowadays. The game just looks different because the players are much quicker, more solid technically, and produce higher racket speeds today.
Watch a match with lin dan and any top player nowadays side by side with a match with ZJ, MF, YY, or MF and you'll notice these differences immediately. It's undeniable.
Oh and the deception. People would rave about zhao's deception but really it's pedestrian compared to what top players do today. Better technology allows quicker, subtler movements and better disguise for every kind of shot.
I'd say though that players in the past made significantly fewer errors.
zhao gameplay is that coz he's a power player n he has height...though he's attacks r great but overall he's so much better than lin dan...so no matter how...the fact is that lin dan is not the greates nor will he ever be the greatest...
TheHighwaytoHell is right and you should really watch their video side by side, even amateur can tell easily that Today's badminton has risen alot compare to the past.
LD has won Olympic Gold, 2 times world Champion and 3 times all England winner. If that doesn't make him the greatest then I don't know what else does.

I don't agree with your last statement. Watch Zhao vs YangYang... far too many errors by both. Compare that with LD vs LCW in Suderman cup 2009, for example. They are far far more consistent.

I think players made less errors too, but i guess that's because the pressure is much higher nowadays. With the increased fitness levels of players nowadays you just can't afford to play with big margins - I think thats what causes the increased number of errors.
it was impossible to get that because the white guy moved in the wrong direction. Can't change direction that quickly and move all the way across the court and retrieve that shot.
cool trick, but if you are righthander and the opponent too its not as effective as lefthander against righthander, because lin plays on kenneths backhand and as a righthander you play to a righthanders forehand. but if u have a stronf wrist you can propably do this trick with your backhand^^

The point of badminton is to get the shuttle on the floor of the other side of the court.
Smashing is one efficient way. I don't know why you wouldn't call smashing a skill.
