For a newborn corn snake is it better to feed them one pinky or two? When should i switch to fuzzies?

@rsnukexiii1 Newborns grow at a faster rate and need the nutrition more than an adult would. When Leeroy was a baby, I would feed him 2 pinkies each feeding. Each feeding was about 10-14days apart. Switching to fuzzies is all about how big your snake gets. When you notice they are easily swallowing pinkies you can move up to fuzzies. Snakes can generally swallow prey that is 1.5x their thickness.

I have a cornsnake maybe a little bit smaller where can I find live pinky mice in Illinois??? I feed it frozen but it never takes it I always have to feed it by grabbing her and putting the pinky face to face with her and poke her in the face with her pinky and then she takes it but she doesn't do it on her own

Just a tip! Be careful with live mice because as the mice get bigger, they can bit your snake. But you've got a good looking corn snake! :)

@Mople77 They have more of an appetite when they are growing. I used to feed him 2 pinkies every feed, but have slowed down. I don't really want to power feed him as I prefer him to be smaller.

@evozakira Mice size is all about how big your snake is. Snakes can swallow 1.5x the thickness of their body. Also, if you notice that your snake is easily swallowing pinkies.. then it may be time to move up to fuzzies.

@JoeldeBunchastu It's actually pretty interesting. I've always thought that being bred in pet stores as feeder mice... 99% of these mice have never seen a snake before. So naturally they are inquisitive and get closer to the snake... but of course, the snake goes pow!

But then, even watching snake footage in the wild on discovery channel, wild mice still stare a snake in the face. I guess if a mice would ever survive a first encounter with a snake, they'd be able to let the other mice know. ;p

@jarheadjourneys Not sure how they are at 2 months, I got mine when he was 5 months. But the more you handle them, the less threatened they feel. But make sure to use slow hand movements.. dont jerk your hand too fast to try to grab him, he'll freak out. You can put your hand out slowly open palm to let him know you're not a predator. Corn snakes love to burrow, mine does as well. They will hide (either by burrowing or under an actual hide) then come out to play in the late afternoon.

Re: constricting, it takes time for them to build up their grappling skill it seems. I also feed my snakes live pinkies to help trigger their constricting instincts. It took about 4-5 feedings (feeding once a week) before Leeroy started. Also, if the food is too small, they will simply swallow it instead of constricting.

Once your snake can easily swallow a pinky... it's time to move up to fuzzies. Snakes can swallow about 1.5 x their thickness.

@perpexel If you pick up a mouse by grabbing at it, you might injure it. Their organs are not as protected as ours. Less chance of hurting them if you use the tail or let them crawl onto your hand.

It just depends. They can usually take in about 1.5x their stomach size (at it's largest part). You can also see how easily he is taking in the pinkies. If it looks like pinkies are going down easily at the mouth, try a small fuzzy.

Start with a corn snake. They are much more reserved, less flighty and fussy. I have a Black Mexican Kingsnake as well as my corn... the kingsnake musks a lot and is always fussy. The corn is awesome, he's always chill:)

They may not have them.. they cater more towards dogs, cats and fish, but you never know.. you can ask. Try looking for a small petshop... call them, if they have snakes... they most likely will sell pinkies, fuzzies, hoppers, and mice.
