I think David Martin Anderson does a great job in his new book, 'The Last Good Horse,' describing horse round-ups in the 1930s and the connection of the Crow people to horses. I'm surprised it's not mandatory reading by the Crow Nation. There's also an author interview on the subject on You Tube. Do a search under the author's name to find it. Great stuff. Great read!

If they'd let the Ranchers who operate on the lands the horses are on do the management of the herds, they'd be worked slower and by people more suited to handle them. It's common sense, let the people who rely on the land manage it because they're livelyhoods depend on it and they are less likely to be wasteful and ruin the resources

When you watch the actual roundup and results, it is terrifying and cruel, and even the aftermath of those turned back free is precarious and scary - they look so sore and lame, hopefully they will recuperate quickly.

Even more scary - all the thousands of more scheduled to be rounded up by BLM - with all public and press viewing BEING BANNED!

We should really focus our efforts on protecting more open space for horses. The wild landscape is so fragmented that many species have to live within lines we have drawn on a map. We should be talking to BLM & FS about a habitat conectivity plan. NREPA is one such model for wildlife in the mountains. Watch the "Wild Horse Roundup - Challis, Idaho July 2009" and you can see what I would say is true government torture of horses. I am glad folks are watching the Pryor horses so closely.

"Herding" horses by helicopter is beyond stupid. It's dangerous, dangerous, dangerous for the horses. The noise from a chopper's rotors is deafening and creates unimaginable terror for these wonderful horses.

Having just witnessed & photographed the BLM's round up of the Challis Herd in Idaho... a nightmare that killed at least 7 horses, injured countless others, orphaned foals and crushed herd dynamics...

I am horrified at the thought of another herd being destroyed.
