I did find that whole "tardis becoming suddenly reliable" thing annoying but, you gotta remember that this is actually a kids show, and kids don't care that much about little details.
And yes, it was a relief to watch the doctors wife and find out that the title was slightly misleading
I'm not talking about Tom on SJA although that would be awesome. I'm talking about Lis doing a BF audio with Tom, which probably can't happen while Lis is doing SJA.
I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I lost my dad at the end of July last year. It's really hard to deal with. Kudos on you for getting back up to do videos though, thank you for coming back.
Great review as always, very fair (though I have to admit I LOVED that episode). Looking forward to series 6!
Just curious, why don't you think Tom Baker and Liz Sladen will ever reunite? Is their some bad blood between them? I can see why Baker and Ward are unlikely to work together given their divorce but Sladen?
@newargot Because right now while Lis is doing Sarah Jane Adventures there's no way Big Finish can afford to bring her on. Plus, her contract might prevent her from doing audios right now (as is the case with the other new series actors).
@TheBigBlueBox Nothing preventing Tom from making an appearance on SJA - perhaps using the premise from the scrapped "Dark Dimension" to explain his having aged (ie intrusion by an alternate timeline where the Fourth Doctor never regenerated). Imagine, Sarah reluctantly having to persuade the Doctor that he's not supposed to exist anymore and needs to correct the timeline despite her bond with him.
@TheBigBlueBox From Tom Baker's site: "Sarah Jane dead? No, impossible! Impossible. Only last week I agreed to do six new audio adventures with her for Big Finish Productions." (sigh)
Try not to nitpick about how this magic box is supposed to work. After all the definition of unreliable is that sometimes it works perfectly as advertised and sometimes its completely off. Like my MST3K friends say. "If your wondering how he eats and breath and other science facts, repeat to your self its just a show, i should really just relax
That was by far the best DR ? XMAS Special (aside from maybe the Runaway Bride) The Motif about being Half-Way-Out-Of-The-Dark and Matt Smith Performance was incredible. You really buy he's this 900 year old character with all the emotions, baggage and quirks that go along with it. Using the Tardis to rewrite someone personality so they'll work with you on a problem I think is a great high concept idea. "
@vention4wh You have to take the Christmas episodes as being a bit of fluff (though with a bigger budget and bigger name guest stars). Giant cyberman, giant spiderwoman, flying shark., flying Titanic. They're all romps best not taken seriously. The only Christmas specials so far that were solid were the Christmas Invasion and in particular the End of Time, both for obvious reasons.
I agree entirely about the review. I watched it and I loved it but all the time I was thinking back to the waters of mars. I think it's okay though because that ship, that moment and those people aren't important, time can bend and flow around them to preserve its connections to the bigger things if needs be, at least that's how I sleep at night.
I have to agree, I wasn't looking forward to them doing a A Christmas Carol, just because it has been done so many times. There are a lot of problems with this episode which you brought up, especially the timey wimey stuff. I did enjoy it to a point though, if only because Matt Smith is so fun in it.
I think you missed out the big problem with the story, namely Abigail's sacrifice. It was said that she was able to soothe the sharks with her singing because she'd existed in a still-point, so why couldn't they thaw someone else out who wasn't due to die? And why did the previously stubborn Kazran suddenly go along with the plan willingly?
@sadako24 Kazran went along with the plan because the Doctor had changed him to the point where he could sacrifice his own for the greater good and that's why the machinery wouldn't recognize him. It is mad about the singing though.
I felt the way you did before seeing the special; did Doctor Who really need to tackle this. I ended up being fine with it, but I agree with you totally. It does have one of my favorite Doctor moments though; Eleven and Marilyn Monroe LOL.
It's not like Doctor Who stories haven't taken place in America before though I get what you're saying; I don't want to see the show cater to other markets and diminish itself either. I kinda wish there were more American stories, so I'm glad it happened. The track record for them though certainly is great. :/
What did you think about the true identity of River Song?

Ya I groaned out loud when they did the flying shark thing.
I also have to say that I like the feel of the old series better anyway. It was more sci-fi and less of a totally "out there" fantasy.

I think I liked it more than you, but I agree that flying shark is stupid. Not since the flying double decker bus ...

gotta agree with you on the idea of the Doctor keeping his Britishness. Thats one of the key things that drew me to the show

You're reasons for not liking this episode are stupid; and you haven't thought them through. No offence, I still like you.
1. MAYBE the doctor didn't land his TARDIS correctly the first time? Maybe it took him a dozen tries to land at the exact moment on the exact window.
2. This is NOT a version of A Christmas Carol, its the doctor being inspired by the story to use that plot to make a good man nice.
3. ok flying shark is stupid.
4. It did break RTD rules, but who knows, maybe rules change

I think this is one of the better Christmas episodes.
