I remember MTV playing this video during the early eighties. It was a little quirky even for MTV at the time. Was the name The Shocking Pinks a reference to The Shocking Blue? (Venus)
Remember this as a late night MTV video, (when they had videos). So cool, that it brings the nostalgia of when Neil's growing up music, met video for the 80's. Makes me wonderin' of what happened to "music"?
You have no idea much this song and video makes me smile! I remember watching this as a kid on MTV in the 80s on Wierd Al TV! I've liked it since and found out a week ago that it was a Neil Young. I almost fell out because it was such a suprize! It opened so many doors because I had no idea he was so diverse as an artist, you know?
Well, Geffen did ask for a "Rock and Roll" album from Neil, and this is what he gave them. This album really does prove what a great sence of humor Neil Young has as a musician.
When my brother and I were like 9 and 10 we used to see this video and laugh at the weird funny guy on it. And every time it came on we'd watch it. The song started to sticking in my head. A few years later I saw 'Rust never sleeps' on t.v .Of course, I could not help but be completely impressed and enamored with the guy. Neil is consistently great.
I'm a recording artist now and every once in a while I love to play ' Wonderin' with the band. Have to do it live some time.
I remember when this song and video came out. Floored me! Love the 'old' Neil, and I think this song is great. The video is so cool. Love how Neil looks. What a great tune. It was 1983! Thanks for posting! Like A Hurricane!
This was the album where the record company told him he had to make a rock n roll record! He didn't like being told what to do artistically, so he created this and pissed off the record company which lasted for years! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
maan whatta bummer bout his teefs...lol....but kewl tune and so totally a ginormous departure from anything Neil had done or has since, I think that his voice was really a lot better too...lol...sorry Neil cuz I know this aint his thang & he was probably just fuggin around yeah? But wtf! Neil's def diverse!
I also remember seeing this on MTV when I was 12 or so. It was my first exposure to Neil Young. Imagine my surprise when I saw what other music was made by the "Wonderin'" guy! Thanks for putting this up - I haven't heard it in over 25 years and was surprised by how much of it I remembered from just a few sightings on TV!
If genius is crazy.....then Neil Young is crazy as shit! This song along with "Sample and Hold" show how diverse this man can be and still hit that shit out of the park.
Yes!! I was 12 when this video was released on mtv,and loved it,i grew to get deep into neil and his music since that time, he was really into the 80's synth sound and got shit for it, from fans and mainly his label, this album was made in this 50;s style because neils label didnt like his new synth sound he was messing with and told him to "make this album more rock& roll" he new they wanted the old folk rock sound but he literally made it Rock& roll to piss them off.but he makes great music >.
Geffen was an accountant, and Young is an artist. Young was exploring the musical boundaries, but Geffen didn't want to pay for it. Geffen wanted safe and true, good old Neil Young.
loved this song since the first time I heard it, I still have original on 33 vinyl and I am still wonderin' if I'll be alone knowing I'll need you to save me - I been walking my room all night my footsteps almost drove me crazy baby you been gone so long - I'll have to save myself, I'm wonderin' - hit it Neil
I actually saw this tour. The front end of it was Trans, the back end was The Shocking Pinks. They ended the shocking pinks show with a killer rendition of 'do you want to dance'. (I saw both ends of it)
Like this song, it is from the rockabilly flavored album "Everybody's Rockin", always liked his trajectory as an artist, even if he pisses the "too set in it's ways music establishment", he has always made music that has integrity.
Never understood why this didn't album didn't take off. You had the Stray Cats doing the same stuff at this time. I know Neil was doing this as a joke, but still it had some good beats to the songs.
I love this as much as I did when it first came out and blew all the other goofy 80's crap out or the water! Thanks, Neil. You're keepin' me alive, man.
I saw a concert is Seattle early 80s, where Neil came out solo for the first half, and then came out as Neil and the Shocking pinks to close, the intermission was music videos on a big screen, If I remember, ( and that is the key word) it was mostly rock a billy music.
@lazlo717 I was at the same show, when the shocking pinks part started, the people behind me pointed at the stage and shouted "That's not neil young" and walked out!
Way back when MTV used to show videos, this was one of those that made me put down the controller and pause. Thanks for posting. I thought he had lost his mind at the time, but looking back on it, it was either forward or a throwback. Might be both.
This album and Trans (2 Piss Off Geffen albums) are what got me INTO Neil as a wee lad in the early 80s. This video is so bizarre if you don't like it you have no soul, much less a taste for the different...
@Elconquistador69too The fact that there are 206 likes and zero dislikes indicates to me that there are many with soul and a taste for the different. 207 now. I heard that at the end of the video they actually did bump Neil's car accidentaly and he was ticked.
@prgvidiot I agree with your blog but I hope you have looked in Neil with Buffalo Springfield and his 8 great solo efforts or with Crazy Horse in the 70s. That was introspective Neil , and this song belongs there too, and the whole world needs to here great records like Goldrush, Zuma, Everyone knows this is Nowhere, etc. Have you seen the 1971 Fillmore tapes .. Neil is so cool and funny.
It was either 1983 or 84 and it was the first Neil Young song I ever heard. Imagine this coming out at a time when Duran Duran, Culture Club and Flock of Seaguls were big.
I remember LOVING this vid back in '83....I'm a musician, and I didin't really realize it at the time, but the period from about '79 to '85 was pretty much anything goes, and a LOT of quality stuff like this was being released. Acts like The Stray Cats, The Producers, The Vapors, Elvis Costello, etc. were doing what they felt was good, and it was! Once Madonna and the Hair bands arrived, everything went to SHIT and hasn't recovered since.....So sad the teen of today can't enjoy what we had....
Why are you saying that here? Are you confusing Geffen with Beatty as well as Neil young with James Taylor, Simon's ex and currently on tour with Carol King, Geffen's ex??
I can't understand why Geffen didn't like this album, or why people don't regard it as being as good as his other, more 'Neil Young sounding' work... This song is so good!
because people are stupid and can't handle when an artist strays from their "typical sound"..It's a shame! His work with the Shocking Pinks is fantastic!
@wegottheseafunk hehe true now but when he did it this wasn't what they expected. To see it now is pretty funny and I like it. But this isn't the Neil they signed
@wegottheseafunk they sued Neil for not sounding like Neil, but then again Fogerty got sued for sounding too much like himself - gotta love the music biz
@wegottheseafunk yeah, I hear you. They are a record company and I guess they wanted his country/rock stuff. As a teenager, I loved this song and thought it was pretty funny and catchy..
@wegottheseafunk I can understand why a lot of people don't like it. But frankly it's a quality album - good vocals, catchy tunes, good backing, strong songs. Bit short, and not what passed for 'mainstream' success in the 80s (or since Elvis) but that's what the album's about - the Payola Blues. Ok, so it doesn't have a Cortez the Killer type of classic tune but neither does Landing on Water, This Note's For You, Ragged Glory or Mirror Ball but they're still pretty amazing.
The song dates back to 1970 and was included in the Live At the Fillmore East and Topanga 3 preformances. The video was filmed in 1983 and received air play on MTV following the release of Youngs 1983 album Everybody's Rockin'.

Carly Simon finally told the world that 'You're So Vain' was written for Geffen... LOL

@louiseduvee
No I'm pretty sure it was Warren Beatty

@louiseduvee
Why are you saying that here? Are you confusing Geffen with Beatty as well as Neil young with James Taylor, Simon's ex and currently on tour with Carol King, Geffen's ex??

by a huge margin this is Neil Youngs greatest album in my view-25 years and still not tired of it

Isismusicnow 1 year ago
@wegottheseafunk they sued Neil for not sounding like Neil, but then again Fogerty got sued for sounding too much like himself - gotta love the music biz

@wegottheseafunk yeah, I hear you. They are a record company and I guess they wanted his country/rock stuff. As a teenager, I loved this song and thought it was pretty funny and catchy..
robbyled 1 year ago
