Ahhh - I've been waiting for this to be posted up. I was present on that night and this was one of the most eye-opening presentations about the NBN I've seen. I was VERY impressed with how Peter conducted himself - very straight down the barrel.
Yeah very nice. This should cut through some of the media FUD hopefully. I really hope people understand the oppositions position on the NBN; all current NBN assets will be given to telstra in a fire sale and we almost never see even a FTTN from them were they to win in 2013.
If there was a business case that suited them, as mentioned, it would already be built. Only a goverment body can justify this low ROI over this term.
ooooh, interesting, i have been looking for some hard technical stuff on the NBN for ages
thumbs up, quite apolitical.. that said, he seems to assume that the current fibre can carry all future lasers.... which seems a bit weird to me. surely not all fibre has the same refractive index etc? I'm sure a bit of old 100baseFX cannot carry those often quoted terabits of data, let alone the first gen fibre from the 70s and 80s. good question at the end about undersea cables
@stinkasectomy 100baseFX is a transmission standard not a fibre standard, 100base FX uses OM1 62.5 micron mulitmode fibre , GPON uses 8.3 micron single mode fibre. single mode fibre has been a consistent standard since the 1980's, it isn't going anywhere for a very long time because all the transit fibre currently in the ground around the world is SMF. there is already 10million + km of SMF in the ground, no one wants to replace that, transceiver tech is developed with this in mind.
I don't care about the first 65 minutes and 54 seconds of the video, I just care that I get my 100mbps

@miloaus63 They look familiar, it might have been part of one of the business case or NBN reports published in the last year.
