  • Playing this is tough enough. Conceiving of such a piece is beyond my ability to comprehend.

  • Those more knowledgeable than me please comment...what influence(s) is being shown here? Chet Atkins? Scotty Moore?

  • Down home BRITISH country rock..... ha!

  • When you hear the guitar isolated like this, you really hear the country/rockabilly influence in this piece of music.

  • I was smiling this entire video. I freaking love yes...

  • The 4 people that "dislike" this have brain damage.

  • @tonusaitis *daim bramage

  • Wow. That's all I can say. He is sweet I wish I could play this!

  • You've got my vote for Greatest Rock Guitarist Of All Time, Steve!

  • I love all yours acordes.

  • dang he's got some long-a** fingers

  • Subtle & majestic! Really nicely done.

  • 4 people don't know the meaning of talent!

  • How in the world do you write a piece of ART like that?

  • definitely shows his barney kessel influence here. wonderful stuff!

  • A great Yes song! I've always liked and wanted to learn how to play this riff!

  • i've seen all good people cherrishing yes.

  • This tone... This is how electric guitar must sound... Not that distorted/overdrived as hell crap nowadays.

  • How could people not know who this guy is ? He's incredible. Steve writes and plays with a style that others only dream of having. And Yes can't even make the Hall of Fame. What an injustice.

  • hey, emos and goths and who ever is disagreeing with them; stop arguing and just agree on the fact that Steve Howe is the best guitarist ever. Set aside your differences and let Steve Howe blow your mind!!!

  • I've seen Yes many times. Howe always plays sublime. I am trying to play this song using this video. Its very hard but each step fully rewarding. As soon as I get something decent I will post a video

  • Maestro!!!

  • @RabbidGuitar1

I feel the exact opposite, I think most 'emo' music (assuming he's referring to stuff like the alternative emo crap and some punk/death metal) has no feeling behind the music, and was just people trying to get attention and make statements with intense and uncreative playing, where classic rock, and many yes songs, have plenty of emotion and feeling, if you think this is merely 'jamming', then you need to re check your music buddy

  • he is an amazing player and i love Yes, but for some reason when i watch him play i get so fucking mad i have absolutely no idea why... its not because of how good he is but its something about his style haha

  • i was hoping to see a lesson, not to have my mind blown

  • hehe its trippy without the rest of the band

  • im 20 years old. i grew up on this shit. Steve Howe is a fucking boss. i saw yes live in baltimore with peter frampton. and they ripped it .

  • im 20 years old. i grew up on this shit. Steve Howe is a fucking boss. i saw yes live in baltimore with peter frampton. and they ripped it .

  • it's funny because my dad play's in asia with him :')

  • Great complexity and sophistication.

  • lmao yeah those certainly look like the hands and arms of a 60 year old. Whats amazing is that Steve Howe wrote this guitar part, fucking musical genious

  • Amazing !!

  • Man, there is no one like him. 034-046 would take me a week to learn alone which is why I never really pursued playing Yes material. One of a kind, for sure.

  • He makes playing the guitar look so easy, magic fingers!!!

  • Ive been playing for two weeks and am finding this a bit tricky.

  • @TheJohnRitchie that's pretty funny

  • @HughRofWood Truth is I've been playing 35 years and I'm still finding this a bit tricky. Steve Howe is fantastic. Cheers

  • hey guys, Steve howe is my favorite guitarist. I want to invest in an es175 guitar does the epiphone model sound close enough to mr. howe's guitar

  • @AshDrums7 Actually Steve Howe used a Gibson ES5 Switchmaster on this recording and for the live shows.

  • @johndrobcuny I looked it up and you're wrong it's a es 175 because the switchmaster has no cutaways

  • I am so pleased with Steve Howe, for sharing these video/lessons with us. How great is he? I could never figure his guitar bits out on my own.He gives us less talanted guitar player a chance to shine, in our little world. and impress our friends.Thank you so much Mr.Howe.

  • Imagine if Steve Howe had went for another instrument, he would've probably succeeded, no doubt, but who would have picked up his slack?

  • If you don't recognize those fingers and that attack. You are a tard! Steve Howe is a modern day genius.

  • This is fantastic to watch. Just fluid mastery of the fretboard. And Steve's right hand positioning is instantly recognizable to anyone who's a Yes fan.

  • Is this Howe hiself? Awesome!

  • Seeing your playing up close makes me realize why Steve is one of my favorite guitarists! Thanks so much! I need to pick up my Martin asap and thanks for the inspiration!

  • so good. and he can't read music? so he memorizes his entire catalog of works?

  • @jennymedia

It's not hard to memorize something you wrote. Once you start playing guitar you'll have memorized hundreds of songs. It's hard to explain, haha.

  • Nice work.... good guitar players always make it look easy.

  • Back in the late 70s and early 80s Steve Howe was voted best all around guitarist year after year by subscribers to Guitar Magazine.

Then if I remember correctly Steve Morse took over that spot for many yrs.

  • btw

Take a look at the video Dixie Dregs - The Bash (Live 1978) to see some amazing Steve Morse playing.

  • i am only 26, but i have been saying for YEARS what an amazing guitarist steve howe is... as far as commercially succesful guitarists go, i'd have to say he's in my top 3.

my friends look at me like i'm an idiot, then they talk about zack wylde or the douche from sabbath... GET REAL!

  • Steve howe is a amazing, but that dosen't mean Tony Iommi is a douche just because hes not as good. i love both guitarists.

  • steve was a maestro on guitar..wanna be like steve?..practice ur ass off wannabees

  • not the best performance by the masterrr

  • such and underated band

  • awesome playing

  • VIRTUOSO Steve Howe

  • EXCELLENT!

  • keep in mind that if steven howe never played guitar, all these shit metal bands wouldn't even be around. progressive laid the path for everything from the 1960's onward.

  • thats only your opinion although i do agree the shitty metal bands would be nothing without the guitar pioneers but there are others just as talented as howe who were in themselves not influenced by howe.

  • true dat

  • @booyacheesewhiz

all you have to do to know that is take a listen to "heart of the sunrise" off of fragile...

  • This guy really has some serious knowledge about harmony!

I actually don't like YES...but it is a great band and he is a kick-ass guitar player

  • listen to Clap then rethink what you said haha this guy is great

  • Well, you listen to perpetual burn of jason becker and then truly rethink what u say man.

  • I didnt bring down Jason Becker, so i dont know why you responded harshly. im just saying you cant judge the skill of a guitarist on one video. Now if you have listened to Clap or his other stuff and you still dont agree with most of us then ok.

  • metal rocker dude, you must be kidding... right??? Steve Howe plays "well" lol (really I lol when I read your comment, it was a joke...right?). Steve how is a guitar master, from rock, to blues, to jazz, to classical.....he is the complete package. He laid the foundation to guitar progressive rock in late 60's / early 70's , has been Jamming with yes for 40 years, countless appearances for band like queen, dream theater, etc. WOW - plays well, plaese tell me you are joking...

  • wow easily one of the best guitarist ever.

  • That`s so true.

  • 0:26 whoa

  • awesome!

  • Yeah, Yes is the one of the greatest rock bands, and almost the only one who had never played with power chords =)

  • Seeing them in November, well Jon Anderson isn't there since hes not well enough to sing =(

  • yes is one of the best rock groups that ever exist

  • Great videos, you are amazing.

  • Kick ass licks!!

  • An absolute pleasure to not only listen to but watch being played.

  • the guy is a genious....i just started to listen to him a few weeks ago and find him absolutly incredible..........there just aint people like him anymore.......fukin emo's and goths have ruined music

  • One of the true masters of the guitar

  • @thenamesluda this guy is steve howe

  • @thenamesluda You need to be careful about what you say about emos and goths, just because you are displeased with our style of dress and our genres of music doesn't mean you can go around blaming us for everyone elses lifestyles, i happen to be emo and yes i do like the "Screamo" music, but i also love guitarists like Steve and im not one of those poser emos who says they can play an instrument. I play the drums, a little bit of bass, and jazz trombone.

  • @thenamesluda modern rap?

  • @Halo3Killionare rap and hip hop is a totally different genre ........my previous statement was really immature and lacked detail........so we now see a high list of different music genre's .......so in conclusion ......steve howe was a leading figure in his league of diligent musicians .....calm yet radical

  • @thenamesluda You mean "genius".. I agree with your statement about emos and goths...but rap and today's R&B has ruined music more, I think

  • @thenamesluda You've got to give your self some credit your the real "genious" here.

  • is this really Steve Howes channel?

  • ck the poster's ID and you'll see its not Steve Howe. The video is the real Steve Howe though.

  • correct -- poster is not Steve, but video is.

  • it seems so. i've never seen these videos anywhere else.

  • like the ending..It's like u hear the ending but it then surprises you with something funny :D

  • Thanks for sharing.. a great solo piece of music. I've listened to that song many times wondering how that music is played.. and now I have seen it all good people.

  • That's INSANE!!!! (in a good way)

  • Perhaps my favourite guitar solo. The record version is absolutely amazing ! if you don't have the Yes Album in your collection, make yourself a gift and buy it now !

  • ...what does that have to do with the video?

  • Howe's compositional skills and note/chord selection is so unique - one of a kind. I will say, though, that there have been a few times I felt his tone wasn't to my liking, but it's all good!

  • his tone is not hard rock it 's more jazz orientated thats why he uses the guitars that you see & why & how he gets his tone , he is so opposite Trevor Rabin that i won't/can't choose one over the other, they are both great..the die hards will favor Steve & the newer fans who came aboard w/ cds like Big generator & 90120 will prob favor Trevor w/ his big rock sound, although i see his classical skills & training as well.

  • It's Steve!

No one else could riff on Howe's riffs and still have it all sound like Steve Howe.

    IMHO.

  • Steve always crafts his riffs to include

the exact bass note no matter what!

He is an incredible guitarist musician,

    and composer, and inspiration!

    thanks for the videos

  • Awesome !!

  • I'm leary as to who this is, BUT, his third finger is long and strong, much like Steves. His fourth finger is way away from home, another Howe trait. I'm impressed non the less.

  • It is actually Steve Howe. Look at the author info and the other videos like this.

  • this is Howe...

  • I really love how good sound a hollow or semi-hollow guitar

  • I love his playing style. Always keeps his thumb behind the neck.

  • yeah, thats proper technique. i play with my thumb over the neck, but i wish i learned to play with it behind the neck.

  • Well, its' not proper to ALWAYS have it back there, but when playing throughout most of the neck like Steve does most of the time, it's a good idea.

  • I seen all good people! a must have! cheers!

  • I don't know who's hands they are but that is not Steve Howe's ES 175. The sunburst finish for one is not the same. On Howe's guitar, the dark brown is at more of a 45 degree angle in the area of the neck pickup and pickup selector. Also the nickel plating on his pickups has been long worn away and would not show a reflection of the right hand like the one in this video.

  • I don't know whose guitar it is, but these are definitely Steve Howe's hands.

  • I don't care, I'm going to learn every note here even if I need to get use to placing my thumb behind the neck :)

  • Get a copy of Yessongs and listen to Steve's solo on "Yours Is No Disgrace" In my opinion that is the best guitar solo ever recorded live. It is intense and transcendent at the same time! Then play "Perpetual Change". Put on your headphones, lay back and close your eyes. When he and Rick Wakeman gets real intense in the middle bit and Steve begins wailing away increasingly from the background you just may have an out of the body experience!

  • I agree. I have been listening to that album for years on double cassette tape and it's still the best live album I've ever heard, better than anything more polished because it's so raw and intense and I love the way it is an honest account of a live perfomance, never could get other rock fans to listen to Yes unless they were already fans though don't know why.

  • i agree with you 100% i think perpetual change was one of their most brilliant pieces

  • Yessongs is the best! I agree to Steve in Yours is no Disgrace his solo is the best guitar solo

  • That guitar has an amazing sound..

  • damn... People say Rush is hard to cover...

  • feaaannnntastic isagupuh

  • better download all these steve howe lessons to real player-sometimes the youtoobs dissapear but you'll still have the vids internet or not eh?

  • what do you have to do for download? Is it necessary to burn them ? Can it just be stored on the drive?

  • Yes just on your HDD it's ok, but dont forget a backup !

  • Wow... this is really incredible, just like a private lesson with mr. Howe.

I've seen it a hundred times, but I really can't understand very well how does it get that strange "popping" sound at 0:30/0:32. What does he exactly play?

    Someone?

  • I don't hear a distinctive "pop". Maybe it's just a low, palm muted note?

  • Very Nice Video,

right to the show, and no bull///good job

  • ive seen Steve howes hands up close, cause he wouldn't shake hands with me at a record signing (worried about arthritis 15 years ago!) no one has knobby spider fingers like his, and those are his. But even if they weren't who cares? Just learn from it.

  • it seems to be so easy

    thank you stewe!

  • lol everyone who doubts that this is Howe nd giving him critisism OF COURSE THIS IS HOWE the fingers tell it off and Howe rarely plays the songs the same way he recorded the , he always changes them up thats why hee is so good

  • Thank you! I laugh hysterically when people claim this is not Steve.lol. There's been comments like "this isn't Steve, he wears his ring on a different finger" or "that's clearly not Steve, he uses a different guitar for this piece" lol. Some people are just f-ing retarded. If they were REAL fans, they could notice his distinct hands. Also, he only uses a few guitars for all the videos on this cd-rom. Thanks for poniting that out.

  • You can tell it is Steve with no doubt just by looking at his arms and fingers. He has a distinctive look.

  • @HoweEs175 Say no more

  • WOW!!! What else can you say?

  • that's ok but not really exact. to me the beauty of copying licks is getting them exact, the right notes, phrasing etc, not just approximating. but nice job anyway

  • uh, excuse me..that is Steve Howe playing in this vdo...look at the hands!

so if this is not good enough for ya, i think you oughta start your own band to play this era's most engrossing music for 40 years, and show us how it's done!

  • I've seen Yes more times than I can count. But this isn't Steve Howe playing.

  • these are excerpts from Steve Howe's cd-rom that came out a few years ago, called Steve Howe Interactive.

It includes interviews, and Steve's personal tour of his amazing collection...and split-screen examples of HIM playing his stuff.

I encourage you to find a copy. It's amazing. I've an old PC w/ an old OS, dedicated to running programs like this one, and the even-older Yes Active Trevor Rabin TALK cd-rom.

Well worth the effort, especially for longtime fans like you and me!

  • if someone would be kind enough to send the tabs for this my way that would be greatly appreciated

message me or comment or something

  • Brings a smile to my face . Thank you Steve!

  • IT IS HOWE!!!!

  • silly boy...that IS Mr Howe.

  • He`s the best....

  • I'm addicted. This guy's just amazing.

  • I'm actually sitting in front of this with my Steve Howe ES175 discovering all the places I've been wrong! Now I have to re-learn it. Crap.

  • I think there is no "wrong" way to play something. If you make a few mistakes while playing it and they still sound good, then that becomes your interpretation of the song. Playing things exactly the same way every time is boring =D

  • I agree. perfection isn't necessary. this interpretation of this song i particularly like though. i like the reworking of the blues.

  • I meant the inspiration and ideas for the licks.

  • STEVE HOWE ON YOUTUBE!!!

  • wow you can learn so much fromn this"!!i may be a 15 year old colombian guy but yes built me!!!

  • Is it normal for me to be getting goose bumps from watching, and listening to this? WOW! Steve Howe is an amazing guitarist, but his arrangement, and exectution of the notes are spectacular. I grew up with YES in the 70s. Phenomenal!!!

  • Thanks for posting this?

Where did you get these videos from?

  • from a Steve Howe cd-rom.

  • Which one?

  • can you post Ram or begginings?

  • Seeing Yes this summer, again !!!!!!!!

  • Steve Howe is a god on guitar. I don't know where he gets all these licks, but there incredible.

  • didnt he make all theses licks?d

  • this channel itz a gold-mine

    yauhhhhhhh
