  • I wonder if CEOs or presidents of tobaco industries or cigarette industries smoke or not.?

  • Australia recently introduced legislation that enforced plain packaging. What was interesting to see was the enormous amount of advertising that was set up to oppose this legislation. An astro-turf group for big tobacco ran ads against the legislation under the name of shop keepers and small business owners. However, as one anti-smoking campaigner pointed out, you know the legislation is going to be effective when big tobacco is so militantly opposed.

  • @radium86 If people know the dangerous effects of tobacco...then why do they buy the products that have tobacco in them? It's not a mystery that smoking cigarettes is unhealthy, but people choose to buy them anyway. It's not a mystery that McDonald's puts all kinds of unhealthy additives in their food, yet people still choose to go to McDonald's. This is telling you one thing...that people ought to make choices about what products they want, not the government.

Logically it would appear that it is telling you the exact opposite, that government should regulate much more strongly. Why? Because the costs to the health system caused by tobacco related diseases are paid by the entire society, not just the victims themselves and what applies to tobacco applies to junk food too.

  • @GunsNRosesbitches yes, but if a person eats a mcdonald's burger next to a kid, that kid isn't going to get lung cancer. smokers don't just make choices for themselves, they make the choices for everyone around them. their spouse, their kids, their pets, their co-workers, their friends, even complete strangers that happen to be sharing a bus stop with them.

  • @radium86 And if someone is willing to endanger his or her health for a short term benefit like eating a McDonald's burger or smoking a pack of cigarettes, then that is his or her choice. They bear the consequences.

  • Nicely done!
