WOW, what's wrong with the responses on here. This is traditional dance from waayyyyy before city folk appeared. The world is gone to hell now with the new people. Loss of anything good and decent. Like Rome, the US shall fall from within by disharmony.
Hillbilly Dancing is not actually the proper name for this style of dance, it's called clogging. I copied and pasted this from Wikipedia since their seems to be some confusion. Clogging is associated with the predecessor to bluegrass — "old-time" music, which is based on Irish and Scots-Irish fiddle tunes. Clogging developed from aspects of English, Irish, German, and Cherokee step dances, as well as African rhythms and movement. It was from clogging that tap dance eventually evolved.
High 5 NaKayla! And in one more response to jpw.. Ya just can't understand maybe what it was like for southern people living in the hills many years ago.. before all of our time. Bet yur sweet bippy Loretta Lynn danced to this music growing up in Butcher Holler.
It's tradition of a past gone by and I think it's great that people can keep it going so as not to forget the past. It's a historical festival, in my opinion.. all in the name of fun and raising money for the crippled children that The Shriners take care of.
Maybe ya have to have some roots in the southern states in order to appreciate it? I just found the fact that the dancing of the past isn't totally lost and that people still know how to do it, just tickled the heck out of me! I can sit and watch it all day long. lol
@Laura7952 Well said and very true... Its a piece of American history and tradition.. The people that created this music and dance this way are the people that built this great nation and we owe ourself and to them to keep this piece of tradition alive and not forgotten... Good people good fun.. Someday I would love to know how to flat foot like this. I love the music too.
theres actaully a documentary that billy ray sirus hosted on the history chanell i dont remember the tittle but most hillbillys came from ireland true fact they started out in the pensylvania mts and made there ways down and the hatfeilds and mcoys isnt true its a romantsieds novel of thert time my whole entire familly is hillbillys theres s alot i know about the cultre sorondin hill folk
Well, there's a sign when you go into Pike County that says Home of the Hatfields and McCoys. I think if it was a bunch of hooey they wouldn't have spent so much making it. It's like a huge monument. I know there's no fueding going on anymore, they're all friends and have an annual Hatfield and McCoy celebration.
try seeing real HB's during the Elkins, WV fall festival. WV is where the hillbilly originated from. The guy with the bibs is a good dancer, and the both of the other guys are good too. bet they have roots from WV though, because WV is the Hillbilly state, not KY. Travel to Elkins WV to see real hillbillies.
You would enjoy it! I've made the trip down there two years in a row. Enjoyed every second of it. Should see the parade of Model A cars all done up Beverly Hillbillie's style. lol
The cars that you see in the parade and in town during the festival , most of them are owned by Shriners that travel to various festivals in their effort to raise money for the Shriners Childrens Hospitals. Heres a link , if you are interested in the history of the festival.
Hillbilly Days is this weekend. April 19th thru 21.. Pikeville, Ky. Just in case ya have nothing better to do. lol I'm going again.. leaving tomorrow to get there in time to enjoy the festivities on Friday and watch the parade on Saturday! Watch for new clips next week! lol
