I found the "tick" will go away with a better quality gas. I run a 5.7 hemi daily. Its hit or miss you could change octane rating as well. Pending any mods...
I really want to buy a 6.1L HEMI engine and swap it into my AWD 2002 Durango SLT+... What do YOU think one would cost, USED and NEW ? Thanks man, and great lookin car. I own a AWD 300C HEMI, only a 5.7L FOR NOW :)
The ticking probably is a lifter.. I had the same issue but my mechanic fixed that.. if you need advice from him shoot me a email. He is friendly and beyond knowledagble when it comes to any kind of vehicle..
i have that same tick in my 5.7 vortec. it goes away after 30 sec. or so or 1-2 min. in cold weather. its a 97 though and has 150,000 hard miles on it. its either a lifter or a bearing making something in there do the ticking. my blazer did that too but it was a cracked spark plug. its mechanical, not an exhaust leak.
all you guys sayin exhaust leak, thats not an exhaust tick. its the same tick you get on an engine thats low on oil. that it goes away after it warms up tells you that its the cold oil not being circulated properly. you could put thinner oil in it, which would circulate faster and easier, but its not a big problem. its a very small design flaw and not anything to worry about
you are right, it's inherent with the challenger's hemi, even with the charger's hemi ... but mine was doing it a bit too much noise so the guy at Dodge Dealer here in Montreal, Canada told me it was the Lifter so he changed it and now it does a lot less noise !!!
in regards to all the comments about the tick. Sounds like its probably the lifters. Oil drains from the lifters sometimes after it sits and take a bit to get them pumped back up.
@WarriorInternationa1 No... Everyone has told me it's inherent with the challenger's Hemi. It usually goes away after about 20-30 secs and doesn't come back until the engine has cooled all the way down. Let me know what the shop says about the noise. I'm curious what actual dodge reps have to say.
@swedishmax well lol the ive taken mine to 2 different dealerships and it has been in the shop 5 different times. they have replaced my pistons something else attached t the piston. they replaced my water pump my oil pump and my lifter and the noise is still there. im going tomorrow to pick it up if they haven't found anything out. but you car sounds very nice. i have the corsa cat back on mine and she sounds alot better than stock.
@swedishmax ALso just to let you know i just filed a lemon law case to my car. they are going to call me back to tell me what to do from here. the dealership its at can not find whats wrong with the ticking so i would look into that if i was you.
@WarriorInternationa1 well... My car is 2 years old now... 20K miles with a Magnacharger, full exhaust, and some other minor stuff... Don't think it qualifies anymore ;)
@swedishmax fuck i am so jealous hahah. i want to get a superchager so bad. im waiting for summer to hit then im going to do some other mods to it. how much hp do you have?
@WarriorInternationa1 When it's cold you can pop the hood, get someone to start it for you and you'll smell the exhaust leak...check your header gasket!!! Happened to mine on the drivers side. Replaced the gasket and torque to 27ftlbs, re-torqued the bolts after a heat cycle (idle the car to temp, then let it cool to the touch), never had a tick since! Stage 8 make header bolts with a locking tab that you set against the primaries so the bolts can come loose. Gaskets & bolts $60.00!!!
Its know as the "hemi tick". Nothing is wrong with it bud, its valvetrain noise. Very common on these newer Dodge motors, my old 1500 with a 4.7 had it also.
just an FYI my hemi truck developed a ticking noise too, it turned out to be a broken exaust manifold stud, the dodge tech told me it was common on the hemi motors. they fixed it under warranty, good luck sounds great!
That ticking noise, is also known as the hemi tick. Which in turn is the valves seating and unseating. I know a guy that custom blends oils and or fluids for hemi motors. That will help it. It doesn't hurt anything otherwise.
What's tapping when you can hear it back up? Lifters? Isn't this car rather... You know.... New?? No hate or anything. I do love these cars, infact I think it's my favourite car being produced right now.
@ mopardude426 im looking for the same thing what gsalazar im looking for a mean sound on my 2010 SE. Im looking around which on is better the catback the one that dodge dealership offer or mageflow or the cherry bombs.. please help thanks.. I am Thinking about getting the one that the dealership is offerin the mopar catback but im no sure if that will give it a mean sound including the cold intake..
It comes from the engine... I think it's the lifter. I've heard from other Challenger owners that the knock is a common occurrence on the 6.1 hemi during warm up
the 5.7's and the 6.1's do tic a little bit when there cold. brand new hemi's off the truck do it. some are just more noisey than others. im a chysler dodge jeep tech. i also have a 72 challenger. i do like how you put the old style tips on there. did they fit right in?
Hey thanks for the tip... Yea they fit right in... I wish they didn't protrude as much though. The magnaflows sound great... but I think this exhaust sounds amazing...
@mopardude426 Hey man, since you are a dodge tech, quick question... is the cat back offered by mopar worth it? or is it better to go aftermarket? I'm between the cat back and flowmasters. If the mopar exhaust is worth it, can I put the original tips instead of the old style tips? I'm looking for a loud, throaty sound, with minimal drone at crusing speeds. Any advice? Suggestions? Anyone??
Hemis always will tick, thats just one of the unique things about them! Gotta love the sound of a hemi, especially a 6.1/6.4
