One can hear in Mr.Elfman's score the influences of Bernard Hermann (The Day the Earth Stood Still) & Akira Ifukube (Destroy All Monsters, Toho Films, 1968), regarding the former it is an homage, ie, the use of theremin. The martial tempo is very Ifukube, & dare I say, shades of Prokofiev, as the tune has an underlying Russian folksy beat, albeit wrapped in appropriately sinister sounding instrumentation. Bravo Mr.Elfman.
The thing that is so freaky about this movie is that there is a huge contrast between this apparent military might of the Martians shown here, and then their goofy (albeit violent) antics later on in the film. Their logic is, for lack of a better word, ALIEN. And unlike the Independence Day aliens whose scavenger-like motivation can be likened to animals or insects, the Martian logic is chillingly comparable to that of a bored human.
An excellent score and a fun and goofy movie. Great beginning, with all those flying saucers. Wonderful to see good ol' fashioned flying saucers again!
For Elfman scores I like Beetlejuice too and nothing tops The Nightmare Before Christmas. Like Jack says "FAN-TASTIC!"
And for Mars Attacks movies nothing beats War of the Worlds. George Pal's 1950s masterpiece, not the God-Awful Spielburg remake. Bleah!
That's debatable, but his works of late have been somewhat sub-par... Tim Burton needs to stick to original concepts nowadays, instead of reworking existing films or books.
I would like to point out that, should anybody be insane enough (i.e. Me) to actually try and convince Paramount / Nickelodeon / Jhonnen Vasquez to actually try and make an INVADER ZIM Film, this theme will inevitably be used in a trailer / the trailer(s). THE FANDOM HAS DECREED IT!!!
@TheWolfMan1941 Just one problem. Mars Attacks portrays itself as being extremely epic and grand and haunting with this opening.... all three things - Invader Zim is not.
@TheWolfMan1941 I think this opening is good as it's own - I don't like the idea of trailers using other themes from different movies. I mean, the trailer for that extremely bad movie Son of the Mask stole the theme from the movie Mousehunt... how random is that? Oh, and the trailer to the first Scary Movie stole the theme from Beetlejuice. What I hate the most about this - they don't fucking credit the movie they take it from, in case someone is curious; like me.
@kurvos Ok, no big deal. You've got your opinion and I have mine. I'm also sure that some other, more successful films have used earlier film's music in their trailers.
Not since DeLaurentis' remake of Flash Gordon has there been such a bold, vibrant, brilliant camp movie. And yes, pair Danny Elfman and a theramin and you've got kitch-paydirt.
How great is Tim Burton he casts a bunch of A list Hollywood stars in an alien invasion movie and the majority of people who survive are the B list actors.
Those saucers must be DAMN fast, if they can get from Earth to Mars in the time it takes to roll the credits, anyone able to calculate the speed they must be travelling to do that :P
if you were to go down that road, you'd have to take nito account that they're not taking off from mars, earth is way to big in the sky toi be as far away as mars, the moon-esque distance would be more like it
if anyone has noticed, this is made like a b-movie, b-movies fail right yet are remembered forever, this failed but it got a cult following, does this mean the movie was a sucses!
@Mistermax30 Not a very good spoof I'm afraid. Spoofs are only good with comedians in them like Leslie Nielsen, Betty White, Lloyd Bridges, Ann Francis, and
Jerry Lewis. Not ones like Benning and Nicholsen and Tom Jones. Just doesn't make sense.
@incrediblehulkmovies It's actually a fairly hilarious spoof, the brilliance behind it is that they used big name actors to play B-movieish roles. Using well known slap stick comedians like Leslie Nielsen and Lloyd Bridges would have sapped the energy from the film and made it forgettable...
@GreenRobotStudios you want big-headed aliens to come and kill half of the planet including the president himself along with the first lady and that they all die with a nice song from slim whitman? yeah, sure...
It's my favorite opening title, perhaps the best of all time. And the music is just perfect, gotta love the use of theremin together with epic orchestra and choir.
Sweet! I just love title sequences that already begin telling the story, and it is done here with the perfect combination of graphics and music. This is one of Elfman's most fitting and epic themes, without a doubt!
It's funny that every one of Tim Burton's films that I have watched that my favorite scene is always the opening credits, because of Danny Elfman's great music, I can just jump and dance to it. I hope Tim and Danny will continue to work together because they can just make great films.
ahh this is one of my favorite scores i love tim burtons movies, combined with danny elfmans compositions of brilliance, it is one word: AWESOME!!! :D
I just bought the soundtrack, cant wait to listen to this relentlessly everywhere.
Theres a quite interesting discussion between tim burton and ray harryhausen. I didnt realise till i saw it that the spaceships in this are more or less exact copies of those from his films.
search "tim burton ray harryhausen" if youre interested. I love those spaceships so much. so iconic, and as tim burton says they have so much character and personality.
I was like a slave to this movie when i was a kid. I loved it, every time i went to the movie rental place, this was the first movie on my mind! Brings back such great memories, and I still think about it every now and then. I love this movie!!!!!
Tim Burton was given an absurd amount of money to make an alien B-movie. He spent it all on great actors and made them act badly. He's a freakin genius!!!
What a great song, but that is to be expected considering how cool the movie was! The song does a great job of capturing the red planet Mars, the god of war.
This score is suberb. It still gives me chills because you know a great movie is soon to follow. Danny Elfman is the John Williams of the quirky set. Seriously, if I make a film, he's the first on my list of composers I'd want. Actually he's the only one on my list.
A musical and filmatic riff on "The Day The Earth Stood Still" opening titles sequence. However, because Burtan and Elfman are so talented in their own right this is extremely effective on its own.
It sounds an awful lot like the music he wrote for Forbidden Zone back in 1980... The opening titles are here on youtube, if you want to hear them. This thing won't let me post a url or I'd give you the direct link. If you search "forbidden zone" it's the third video down.

One of the most savagely underrated films of the 90's.
It's supposed to be tacky, it's supposed to be fake, it's supposed to be corny -- and it's frankly an awful film.

What mainstream contemporary director apart from Burton would've done it?
